Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in General Chemistry In preparing this textbook in general chemistry the authors have been guided by a few simple principles. They have endeavored to write a book scientific in spirit and at the same time thoroughly teach able. It may be said at once that the text presents few novelties, either in arrangement or in method. While individual teachers can succeed better by adopting unusual and original modes of presentation, we appear to have reached a more or less standard method, which is, on the whole, best adapted to the greatest number. Book A College Text Book of Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A College Text Book of Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Ira Remsen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Chemistry IN the preparation of this book I have been much encouraged by the cordial reception Which has been given my earlier text-books, both in this country and abroad) While those earlier works are intended to form a series of which the present volume is the most advanced member, it has little in common With the lower mem bers except the general method of treatment. An occa sional paragraph from the Briefer Course has been incorporated, but the two books are quite distinct. In classifying the elements the periodic system has been adopted, and this has been pretty closely adhered to. In order to secure as logical treatment as possible it has been thought best not to give detailed descriptions of apparatus and specific directions for the preparation of substances, in the text proper. By avoiding these the attention can be better directed to the principles involved and a clearer conception of these principles Will be formed, than When the attention is distracted by the reading of such details. Ou the other hand, full descriptions of apparatus and processes Will be found in the Appendix and these, it is believed, Will be of service to the teacher in the lecture-room, as well as to the student in the laboratory. Book Elements of General Chemistry

Download or read book Elements of General Chemistry written by John Harper Long and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of General Chemistry: With Experiments In too many instances the student is introduced to qualitative analysis as his first laboratory work, and this is followed by gravimetric analysis to complete a course. This plan certainly gives the beginner a distorted idea of the relative importance of analytical chemistry in the study of the science; for the beginner a knowledge of the proper ties of a substance, the methods of its preparation and its uses is far more important than acquaintance with methods of separation, and general illustrative experiments should, therefore, be made the foundation work in the laboratory. Book The Calculations of General Chemistry

Download or read book The Calculations of General Chemistry written by William J. Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Calculations of General Chemistry: With Definitions, Explanations, and Problems Unless a clear and concise exposition of the methods of calculation is presented in the very first course of college work, the progress of the student is greatly hindered. On the other hand, too great a mass of mathematical data may impede rather than promote this progress. The aim, therefore, has been to limit these calculations to those subjects generally regarded as fundamental, and in which the student should receive the most complete and thorough drill. Such may rightfully constitute our Arithmetic of Chemistry. Of the many important subjects omitted, the greater number possess a theoretical bearing which brings them more properly into those courses following General and Analytical Chemistry or into the study of Physical Chemistry itself. It takes a master like McQuarrie to go back to the drawing board and create a logical development from smallest to largest that makes sense to students."---Hal Harris, University of Missouri-St. Louis "McQuarrie's book is extremely well written, the order of topics is logical, and it does a great job with both introductory material and more advanced concepts.
