Book General Catalogue of Bates College and Cobb Divinity School 1863 1915 Classic Reprint

Download or read book General Catalogue of Bates College and Cobb Divinity School 1863 1915 Classic Reprint written by Bates College Lewiston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Catalogue of Bates College and Cobb Divinity School, 1863-1915 Cobb Divinity School was established at Bates in 1870, and for thirty seven years was maintained as a department of the college. It has been the aim of your committee to get as complete a record of the graduates of this school as practicable, not only for the use of this catalogue but for all future ones. It was deemed advisable to compile a record of those students who attended Bates but did not complete the full four years course. This was attempted for two reasons; first, to show that the college has con tributed to the education of a large number of students not included in its list of graduates; and, second, to show a proper appreciation of their devotion and loyalty to the college and to strengthen the hope that their interest in it will always abide. The past few years have given proof that many of them are among its most loyal friends. The abbreviations used will be readily understood without explana tion. In connection with degrees and professorships held in the college, to avoid the constant repetition of the word Bates, it has frequently been omitted where it can be clearly understood. The work has been a difficult one, and many desired facts could not be obtained; yet we hope what we have accomplished will be appreciated. College records, catalogues, and the Bates Student have been freely consulted, together with Genealogies and Town Histories. Circulars have been sent to the graduates and non-graduates, where their addresses were known, and in many cases several times. Great assistance has been rendered by graduates and friends of the college. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From its foundation in 1826, UCL embraced a progressive and pioneering spirit. It was the first university in England to admit students regardless of religion and made higher education affordable and accessible to a much broader section of society. It was also effectively the first university to welcome women on equal terms with men. From the outset UCL showed a commitment to innovative ideas and new methods of teaching and research. This book charts the history of UCL from 1826 through to the present day, highlighting its many contributions to society in Britain and around the world. It covers the expansion of the university through the growth in student numbers and institutional mergers. It documents shifts in governance throughout the years and the changing social and economic context in which UCL operated, including challenging periods of reconstruction after two World Wars. Today UCL is one of the powerhouses of research and teaching, and a truly global university. It is currently seventh in the QS World University Rankings. This completely revised and updated edition features a new chapter based on interviews with key individuals at UCL. It comes at a time of ambitious development for UCL with the establishment of an entirely new campus in East London, UCL East, and Provost Michael Arthur’s ‘UCL 2034’ strategy which aims to secure the university’s long-term future and commits UCL to delivering global impact.

Book This Nonviolent Stuff ll Get You Killed

Download or read book This Nonviolent Stuff ll Get You Killed written by Charles E Cobb Jr. and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visiting Martin Luther King Jr. at the peak of the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, journalist William Worthy almost sat on a loaded pistol. "Just for self defense," King assured him. It was not the only weapon King kept for such a purpose; one of his advisors remembered the reverend's Montgomery, Alabama home as "an arsenal." Like King, many ostensibly "nonviolent" civil rights activists embraced their constitutional right to selfprotection -- yet this crucial dimension of the Afro-American freedom struggle has been long ignored by history. In This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed, civil rights scholar Charles E. Cobb Jr. describes the vital role that armed self-defense played in the survival and liberation of black communities in America during the Southern Freedom Movement of the 1960s. In the Deep South, blacks often safeguarded themselves and their loved ones from white supremacist violence by bearing -- and, when necessary, using -- firearms. In much the same way, Cobb shows, nonviolent civil rights workers received critical support from black gun owners in the regions where they worked. Whether patrolling their neighborhoods, garrisoning their homes, or firing back at attackers, these courageous men and women and the weapons they carried were crucial to the movement's success. Giving voice to the World War II veterans, rural activists, volunteer security guards, and self-defense groups who took up arms to defend their lives and liberties, This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed lays bare the paradoxical relationship between the nonviolent civil rights struggle and the Second Amendment. Drawing on his firsthand experiences in the civil rights movement and interviews with fellow participants, Cobb provides a controversial examination of the crucial place of firearms in the fight for American freedom.

Book Anti Intellectualism in American Life

Download or read book Anti Intellectualism in American Life written by Richard Hofstadter and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1964 Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction Anti-Intellectualism in American Life is a book which throws light on many features of the American character. Its concern is not merely to portray the scorners of intellect in American life, but to say something about what the intellectual is, and can be, as a force in a democratic society. "As Mr. Hofstadter unfolds the fascinating story, it is no crude battle of eggheads and fatheads. It is a rich, complex, shifting picture of the life of the mind in a society dominated by the ideal of practical success." —Robert Peel in the Christian Science Monitor
