In October ltibo, he took the degree of D. D. And was appointed one of tlie king' s chaplains in ordinary, and in Sept. 1663, regius professorof divinity, in which chair he sat seventeen yea1s, and acquitted himself with honour. In 1665 he was appointed provost of Eton col lege, where he raised the school, which he found in a low condition, to an uncommon pitch of reputation. The west side of the outward quadrangle ofthat college was bu1lt from the ground at his expense. The excellent Dr. Hammond, who was his intimate friend, left him his valuable library, which he bequeathed himself to his successors in the divinity chair. His eagerness for study, and his intention of mind while he was employed in it was so great, that it impaired his constitution, and hastened his death. In 1680, find, ing his health and sight much weakened, he resigned his professorship of divinity to Dr. Jane. And now the' decay of his constitution terminating in a dropsy, he removed to London, to have the advice of physicians; but medicines proving ineffectual, he died January 27th, 1680; and was buried in Eton chapel, where a marble monument, with an elegant Latin inscription, was e1ected to his memo1y. He did not enjoy the advantages of a regular education, having, in the early part of his life, been taken to sea by his father, who was master of a merchant-ship. Becoming commander of a vessel employed in the slave trade, he made several voyages to the coast of Africa, for the purpose of carrying on that dis gusting trafl'ic, and in the mean time contracted habits of dissipation and vice, which the bru talizing scenes he witnessed tended to origi nate and confirm. At length he grew serious and fond of study, and having relinquished the occupation of a mariner, he, in 1755, obtained the office of tide-surveyor of the port'of Liver pool. There he remained several years, and during the latter part of that period he be came a preacher, and made some abortive at tempts to gain a settlement as pastor to a dis senting congregation. In 1764 he was ordained a clergyman of the church of England, by the bishop of Lincoln, and immediately after, through the intervention of lord Dartmouth, he was appointed curate of Olney in Bucking hamshire. During a residence of fifteen years at that place, he formed an intimate friendship with the poet Cowper, whence originated a vo lume of hymns for public worship, their joint composition. In 1779 Mr Newton removed to London, on being promoted to the rectory of St Mary Woolnoth, which he held till his death in December 1007. He was the author of a Review of Ecclesiastical History, 1770, 8vo Messiah, or a Series of Discourses on the Scriptural Passages which form the Ora torio of Handel, 1786, 2 vols. 8vo and other works, which have been printed toge ther, in 6 vols. 8vo and 12 vols. 12mm Evang. He laid out this money in stones, which be caused to be carried through all the streets, to shew his design to the public. He soon obtained considerable donations from all parts; and the duke of Orleans, regent of the kingdom, granted him a lottery. That prince likewise laid the first stone of the porch in 1718; and Languet spared neither labour nor expence during his life, to make the church one of the finest in the kingdom, both for architecture and ornaments. It was consecrated in 1745, with so much splendour, that Frederic II. Of Prussia wrote the vicar a congratulatory letter, in which he not only praises the building, but even the piety of the founder, a quality which Frederic knew how to notice when it served to point a compliment. He was the son of Mr. John Wall, an opulent tradesman of the city of Worcester, who served the office of mayor in 1703. He received the early part of his education at a grammar-school at Leigh-Sinton, and at the college school of Worcester, whence he was elected scholar of Worcester-college, Oxford, in June 1726. In 1735, he was elected fellow of Merton-college, soon after which he took the degree of bachelor of physic, and removed to the city of Worcester, where he was many years settled in practice. In 1759, he look the decree of M. D. Besides an ingenious "Treatise on the virtues of Malvern-waters," which he brought into reputation, he enriched the repositories of medical knowledge with many valuable tracts, which, since his death, have been collected into an octavo edition, by his son, the present learned Dr. Martin Wall, F. R. S. clinical-professor of the university, and were printed at Oxford in 1780. He married Catherine youngest daughter of Martin Sandys, esq. of the city of Worcester, barrister at law, and uncle to the first lord Sandys. Dr. Wall was a man of extraordinary genius, which he improved by early and indefatigable industry in the pursuit of science; but he was more particularly eminent in those branches of natural philosophy which have an immediate connexion with the arts, and with medicine. He was distinguished likewise through his whole life by an uncommon sweetness of manners, and cheerfulness of disposition, which, still more than his great abilities, made his acquaintance courted, and his conversation sought, by persons of all ranks and ages.
