Book A Review of the Analytical Simulation of Aircraft Crash Dynamics

Download or read book A Review of the Analytical Simulation of Aircraft Crash Dynamics written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of full scale tests of general aviation aircraft, helicopters, and one unique air-to-ground controlled impact of a transport aircraft were performed. Additionally, research was also conducted on seat dynamic performance, load-limiting seats, load limiting subfloor designs, and emergency-locator-transmitters (ELTs). Computer programs were developed to provide designers with methods for predicting accelerations, velocities, and displacements of collapsing structure and for estimating the human response to crash loads. The results of full scale aircraft and component tests were used to verify and guide the development of analytical simulation tools and to demonstrate impact load attenuating concepts. Analytical simulation of metal and composite aircraft crash dynamics are addressed. Finite element models are examined to determine their degree of corroboration by experimental data and to reveal deficiencies requiring further development. Book Development Experimental Verification and Application of Program KRASH for General Aviation Airplane Structural Crash Dynamics

Download or read book Development Experimental Verification and Application of Program KRASH for General Aviation Airplane Structural Crash Dynamics written by Gil Wittlin and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Included in this report are the results of a three-task effort to develop, experimentally verify, and apply digital computer program KRASH to structure of general aviation airplanes subjected to a survivable crash environment. The Task I summary provides the essential results of: the evaluation of light fixed wing airplane, including operational velocity, weight, usage and occupant capacity; the evaluation of NTSB and CAMI accident data and an assessment of industry analytical requirements insofar as crash analysis is involved. The Task II summary presents the highlights of the full-scale test preparation, the crash test condition, the crash test results, the mathematical models used to represent the crash test condition, the correlation between analysis and test results and an overview description of the KRASH User's Manual. The Task III effort, including the parameter variation study and the application of program KRASH in the evaluation of structural design concepts during a survivable crash environment is presented in detail. The response of structure and occupants are obtained for different airplane configurations and impact condition and presented in the form of trend curves and time histories. Weight and implementation/operational cost penalties versus dynamic response changes are presented for different structural design changes. Conclusions developed as result of the three-task effort are presented. (Author).

Book Safety Report

    Book Details:
  • Author : United States. National Transportation Safety Board
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1980
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 72 pages

Download or read book Safety Report written by United States. National Transportation Safety Board and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of general aviation aircraft in transportation during the past decade has increased rapidly. Possibly more passengers are transported annually in general aviation aircraft than in all commercial air carriers combined. Investigations of general aviation aircraft accidents believed to be survivable indicate that the causes and types of injuries and fatalities are not different from those documented 30 to 40 years ago. However, improvements in the crashworthiness of automobiles during the past decade has been documented through a reduction of the fatality-to-injury ratios. Such improvement in general aviation aircraft crashworthiness has been sought by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Civil Aeronautics Board, and others for more than 35 years. This report reviews past accident investigations, regulatory developments, and crashworthiness research activities, and assesses the adequacy of current general aviation crashworthiness requirements. As a result of this review, recommendations for improved crashworthiness of general aviation aircraft are made.

Book Why Airplanes Crash

Download or read book Why Airplanes Crash written by Clinton V. Oster Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the causes of airplane accidents and what private and public policies are needed to improve aviation safety. It begins by examining the safety record of the United States commuter airline industry in the post-deregulation era characterized by increased emphasis by airlines on cost control and growing pressures on the air traffic control and airport system. The authors go beyond the safety of the scheduled airlines to examine the reasons for accidents in the nonscheduled and general aviation segments of the United States industry, where the bulk of fatalities occur and where airline pilots increasingly receive most of their training and experience. They then turn to an examination of aviation safety throughout the world, first with a detailed comparison of Canadian and American aviation safety, and then with a look at air safety in all regions of the world and the safety performances of all the world's major airlines. Three emerging issues are then examined in greater detail: assessing the margin of safety, worldwide aging of all airline fleets, and terrorism.
