Book General Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book General Astronomy Classic Reprint written by H. Spencer Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Astronomy In this work the Author has endeavoured to cover as wide a field as possible and it has necessarily been somewhat difficult to decide upon what to include and What to omit, especially when dealing with the most recent developments. It is hoped, however, that the book will serve to give the reader a sufficiently complete view of the present state of Astronomy. Mathematics has been almost entirely excluded in order that the volume may appeal to the amateur, no less than the student. Where possible mathematical methods of reasoning have been followed, which it is hoped will prove of value to students of elementary mathematical astronomy in clothing the symbols with more descriptive matter than is given in the text-books on Mathematical Astronomy. Book A Text Book of General Astronomy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of General Astronomy: For Colleges and Scientific Schools The present work is designed as a text-book of Astronomy suited to the general course in our colleges and Schools of science, and is meant to supply that amount of information upon the subject which may fairly be expected of every liberally educated person. W'hile it assumes the previous discipline and mental maturity usually corresponding to the latter years Of'lthe college course, it does not demand the peculiar mathematical training and aptitude necessary as the basis of a special course in the science - only the most ele mentary knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry is required for its reading. Its aim is to give a clear, accu rate, and justly proportioned presentation of astronomical facts, principles, and methods in such a form that they can be easily apprehended by the average college student with a reasonable amount of effort. The limitations Of time are such in our college course that probably it will not be possible in most cases for a class to take thoroughly everything in the book. The fine print is to be regarded rather as collateral reading, important to any thing like a complete view of the subject, but not essential to the course. Some of the chapters can even be omitted in cases where it is found necessary to abridge the course as much as possible; e.g., the chapters on Instruments and on Perturbations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy Finally, the aim has been to give the student a well balanced conception of the astronomy of the present day. It is desired that it shall become an appreciable part of his mental picture of the general universe, which strongly colors all his Opinions even though he is not aware of the fact. When considered in relation to its influence upon the gen eral intellectual horizon, astronomy has claims which are second to those of no other science; and plain duty demands that in outlining courses of study these claims Shall not be ignored. Illustrating and explaining many astronomical phenomena, and in finding the constellations and principal stars. Be sure that the globe has a horizontal ring about the middle. A Planisphere is a tolerable substitute for a globe, and much cheaper. A Star Lantern is also very convenient. A good star-map is important. A tele scope of any size, or even a good spy-glass or pair of opera-glasses, will add much interest to the study. Book Old and New Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old and New Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Richard Anthony Proctor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New Astronomy If such powers of vision, and also (for they would be even more needed) such powers of conception, were given to the astronomer, that the extent of the domain which the telescope has revealed to man could be adequately recognised, while be further became cognisant of the way in which the various portions of that domain are occupied, I conceive that, deeply as he would be impressed by the amazing scene, the sense of wonder he would experience would sink almost into nothingness by comparison with that which would overwhelm him could he recognise with equal clearness the movements taking place amongst the orbs presented to his contemplation - could he see moons and moon-systems circling around primary planets, these urging their way with inconceivable velocity around their central suns, while amid the star depths the suns were seen swiftly travelling on their several courses, star streams and star-clusters aggregating or segregating according to the various influences of the attractions to which they were subject, and the vast spaces occupied by the gaseous nebulm stirred to their inmost depths by the action of mighty forces whose real nature is as yet unknown to us. During millions, during hundreds, thousands, millions of millions of years in the past, such movements have been in progress, and they will continue during countless millions of years which are yet to come. Nay, it may well be that to speak of time, thus viewed, as measurable by years, even though we number them by millions, is as idle as it would be to speak of miles when dealing with the measurement of star-strewn space. Book Practical Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Astronomy Classic Reprint written by P. S. Michie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Astronomy This volume, both in respect to matter and arrangement, is designed especially for the use of the cadets of the U. S. Military Academy, as a supplement to the course in General Astronomy at present taught them from the text-book of Professor 0. A. Young. It is therefore limited to that branch of Practical Astronomy which relates to Field Work, and more particularly to those subjects which are not discussed at sufficient length for practical work in Professor Young's volume. It is believed, however, that it will find a use ful application in the hands of Officers Of the Army, who may be called upon to conduct such explorations and surveys for military purposes as the War Department may from time to time direct. The more usual methods of determining Time, Latitude, and Longitude, on Land, are explained, and the requisite. Reduction formulas are deduced and explained. In addition, there is given a short explanation Of the principles relating to the Construction Of Ephemerides, to the Figure of the Earth, the determination of Azimuths, and the projection of Solar Eclipses. The instruments described are those used by the cadets in the Field and Permanent Observatories of the Military Academy dur ing the summer encampment. Download or read book Freeburg s Manual of Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Alfred Freeburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freeburg's Manual of Astronomy The heaven is a great dome. It contains many great objects, and their great distance from us and how they can exist without a foundation or some thingto hold them up is mysterious to most any man's mind. But nature has brought them there to stay for innumerable ages. These bodies are held in check by an magnetic current from our sun. This magnetic current is caused by the heat from the sun and cooled by space, and works nearly on the same principle as load stone. The object of writing this book is to give the people of the world a full under standing, as far as I am able to explain, what I have observed in the star heaven and studied nature for thirty-five years. My aim is to give'to the world the truth as far as I understand it. I have treated in this book on all the objects in space that can be seen with a naked eye. In my next publication treat ing on the heavenly bodies I will give very nearly the exact distance to the sun and the moon. I think the distance given to the sun is too great or the moon is too near to the earth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Astronomy If proof were wanted of the inexhaustible fertility of astro nomical science in points of novelty and interest, it would suffice to adduce the addition to the list of members of our system of no less than eight new planets and satellites during the prepara tion of these sheets for the press. Among them is one whose discovery must ever be regarded as one of the noblest triumphs of theory. In the account here given of this discovery, I trust to have expressed myself with complete impartiality; and in the exposition of the perturbative action on Uranus, by which the existence and situation of the disturbing planet became revealed to us, I have endeavoured, in pursuance of the general plan of this work, rather to exhibit a rational view of the dynamical action, than to convey the slightest idea of the conduct of those masterpieces of analytical skill which the researches of Messrs. Leverrier and Adams exhibit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
