Book Further Genealogical Notes on the Tyrrell Terrell Family of Virginia and Its English and Norman French Progenitors

Download or read book Further Genealogical Notes on the Tyrrell Terrell Family of Virginia and Its English and Norman French Progenitors written by Edwin Holland Terrell and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of the Tyrrell-Terrell clan stretches back to the Middle Ages, finding and explaining references to ancestors who resided in Europe several centuries ago. Although brief, this book's contents are the result of deep researches into archival data undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century. The enquiry resulted in the discovery of the family founder, who was connected with the Counts of the Vexin - a group of nobles who ruled lands in a time predating the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century. From here, we are taken through the various manifestations of Tyrrell/Terrell ancestors, often recorded under a variety of different spellings due to inconsistent records keeping of the distant past. Later in the enquiry, we see various Tyrrell family members appear as émigrés in colonial North America, with records found in the archives of both New York and Boston. Mentions of notable family members and their progeny also appear, that readers can trace the lineages over the centuries. Descendants as well as genealogy enthusiasts will find this research illuminating, both in the sense of what was uncovered, as well as the limitations present in sources from long ago.

This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brothers Henry Enoch and Enoch Enoch came to Virginia before 1750, settling on the sparsely populated frontier west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their Virginia years were defined by the French and Indian War (1755-1763) and their close association with young George Washington. By 1757, their children had begun to explore more westerly lands, where they ultimately resettled with their families in what is now Washington County, Pennsylvania. Henry Jr., David, and Enoch Enoch were among the first "over the mountain men," settling west of the Allegheny Mountains by 1767. Their Pennsylvania years were defined by the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the Indian Wars (1786-1795). By the turn of the century, the Enochs began looking west again, this time to the more promising lands of Ohio.

Book excerpt: As the country enters a new era of conversations around race and the enduring impact of slavery, The Hairstons traces the rise and fall of the largest slaveholding family in the Old South as its descendants—both black and white—grapple with the twisted legacy of their past. Spanning two centuries of one family’s history, The Hairstons tells the extraordinary story of the Hairston clan, once the wealthiest family in the Old South and the largest slaveholder in America. With several thousand black and white members, the Hairstons of today share a complex and compelling history: divided in the time of slavery, they have come to embrace their past as one family. For seven years, journalist Henry Wiencek combed the far-reaching branches of the Hairston family tree to piece together a family history that involves the experiences of both plantation owners and their slaves. Crisscrossing the old plantation country of Virginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi, The Hairstons reconstructs the triumphant rise of the remarkable children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the enslaved as they fought to take their rightful place in mainstream America. It also follows the white descendants through the decline and fall of the Old South, and uncovers the hidden history of slavery's curse—and how that curse followed slaveholders for generations. Expertly weaving stories of horror, tragedy, and heroism, The Hairstons addresses our nation’s attempt to untangle the twisted legacy of the past, and provides a transcendent account of the human power to overcome.

Book excerpt: This excellent genealogy identifies well over five thousand individuals in the male line through eighteen generations in England and the United States. The family here studied is the Goode family of Virginia, introduced to America prior to 1660 by the immigrant John Goode. John was born in the vicinity of Cornwall, England, between 1620 and 1630. Whitby refers to the plantation that John established in Virginia, a corruption of the spelling of his English birthplace, Whitley. A wealth of data has been included on the history of the Goodes in England, greatly enhancing the value of the text. Several items are worthy of special notice: a facsimile reprint of the will of John Goode; an "Army Roll," listing family members who rendered service in Bacon's Indian War, Braddock's Expedition, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Florida Indian War, the Mexican War and the Civil War (both Union and Confederate troops); three appendices-"The Family in England, with notices of American offshoots not of the Whitby stock," "Some Ancestral Families," and "Addenda et Corrigenda;" a key listing principal works of reference; and a full name index, cross-referenced with the aforementioned list of references.
