Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the First Seven Generations of the Bidwell Family in America Many wonder why I should spend so much time and money upon a record of this kind and have thought I must be working to obtain some long forgotten property; and a few have refused to send any informa tion on this account, as I could not convince them to the contrary. I can only say that at first this work was taken up without any knowl edge of its magnitude, that it was done as a pastime during vacations from business and that I probably inherited a liking for work of this kind. All are interested in preserving the history and records of their ancestors, in knowing how they lived, what their occupations were and other facts about them the eldest of each family delight in relating to children and grandchildren incidents that occurred to them, their parents or grandparents, and these incidents are care fully remembered for several generations but are at last forgotten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Bostwick Family in America: The Descendants of Arthur Bostwick, of Stratford, Conn While this small book was prepared with a great deal of care, it was very incomplete in many ways, and some years ago I was prompted by a desire to see the history of our family put in such shape, as to place before the descendants of our emigrant ancestor, records of the early generations which might prove of value and interest to those now bearing the name of Bostwick or their descendants. To that end, I have, during the past eight years, collected such records as it was possible to obtain, and the result is to be found in the pages of this book. I do not claim that this work contains the name of every descend ant of our earliest ancestor, but, as far as it has been possible to obtain them, it contains the names of all persons positively identified with the original line of descent. To a considerable degree, the descendants in the female lines are also to be found, and these have been made as complete as possible, without devoting too much time to them. I have had the usual experience of all genealogists in encountering several classes of persons, in preparing this work. One class consists of those who seem to think that the compilation of this book has been done for the sole purpose of making money out of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trowbridge Genealogy: History of the Trowbridge Family in America The arms borne by the Trowbridge family are what are termed in heraldry armes parlanfes, because of their allusion to the nameh-t-he. Bridge and the water running through. In the earliest heraldry, whenever it was possible, the object chosen was one whose name bore sufficient resemblance in sound to suggest the name of the bearer of it. This characteristic of the Trowbridge arms is an evidence of their antiquity. In A Treatise on Heraldry by Woodward and Burnett, page 362, is printed the following account of the use of the bridge in heraldry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Bear Family and Biographical Record of the Descendants of Jacob Bear, 1747-1906 Bearsdale, Macon county, Illinois, Jacob, Samuel and Ephraim Bear, Jr., had lived and reared their large families, but in recent years the children and grandchildren of these old pioneers have become more and more scattered. In the Summer of 1903, some of each branch who had removed: to other localities, it so hap pened, were back in the old neighborhood at the same time, and coming together at the old homestead of Samuel Bear, where his widow and youngest son still reside, it was thought this would be a good time to put the plan into operation. At this gathering were the following persons: Mrs. Hulda Rankin, Mrs. Mary E. Braden, Mrs. Emma Reisinger, Mrs. Mary Bear, Mrs. Sarah M. Bear, Mrs. Ann C. Bear, Samuel E. Bear and wife, and Brice J. Bear and wife. Brice J. Bear, of Bearsdale, Ill., was elected President, and an Executive Committee appointed composed of the following persons: Samuel E. Bear, of Welch, Ind. Ter. Mrs. Mary E. Braden, of Lake Arthur, La. Mrs. Hulda Rankin, of White Heath, Ill.; Mrs. Elizabeth A. Troutman, of Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Emma C. Reisinger, of Bearsdale, Ill. Walter S. Bear, of St. Louis, Mo., was made Secretary, and selected to collect the material for the book. At this time it was not expected to get up anything more than a record of the descendants of Ephraim Bear, Sr but as old records were found, the plan so unfolded itself that in this volume is given practically a complete record of all the descendants of Jacob Bear, Sr. There are possibly not a dozen names missing in this genealogy, which embraces seven generations from 1747 to 1906.
