James Forbes-Mitchell (1724-ca.1779), direct descendant of Thomas and son of Alexander Mitchell and Flora Forbes, was baptized as "Forbes- Mitchell" on the authority of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, and the family has used the double surname since. James Forbes-Mitchell was the grandfather of the author, who served the Crimean War and later in the Indian Mutiny in the 1850s. The author retired in India after the death of his eldest son there.

Martha was the daughter of Lemuel L. and Hannah Burtis Skidmore. By profession, John was a librarian. He died 4 October 1824 and was buried in the cemetery of St. Luke's P. E. Church in Hudson Street, New York City. Martha died 2 April 1861. She was buried with her husband in St. Luke's Churchyard in New York. Descendants lived in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, California and elsewhere.
