The chapters in this volume place gender history at the interface with international history and international relations. They explore a wide variety of themes and issues within the British and European context, especially notions of gender identity, the politics and culture of women’s suffrage in the early part of the twentieth century and the role gender played in the formulation and execution of British foreign policy. The book also breaks new ground by attempting to gender diplomacy. Further, it revisits the popular view that women were connected with the peace movements that grew up after the First World War because the notion of peace was associated with stereotypical female traits, such as the rejection of violence and the nurturing rather than destruction of humankind. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Diplomacy and Statecraft.

Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Upper Silesia was the site of the largest formal exercise in self-determination in European history, the 1921 Plebiscite. This asked the inhabitants of Europe’s second largest industrial region the deceptively straightforward question of whether they preferred to be Germans or Poles, but spectacularly failed to clarify their national identity, demonstrating instead the strength of transnational, regionalist and sub-national allegiances, and of allegiances other than nationality, such as religion. As such Upper Silesia, which was partitioned and re-partitioned between 1922 and 1945, and subjected to Czechization, Germanization, Polonization, forced emigration, expulsion and extermination, illustrates the limits of nation-building projects and nation-building narratives imposed from outside. This book explores a range of topics related to nationality issues in Upper Silesia, putting forward the results of extensive new research. It highlights the flaws at the heart of attempts to shape Europe as homogenously national polities and compares the fate of Upper Silesia with the many other European regions where similar problems occurred.

The author combines professed aim of Scouting (citizenship), the key motives for supporting it (governance, war, secular education and religious conversion) and the most relevant differentiating identities (race, class, gender and age) to analyze the experience of young people involved in Hong Kong Scouting throughout the years, both colonial and post-colonial. The book is richly illustrated with interesting and instructive images and relied heavily on a doctoral dissertation by the author, though they are also significantly different in both structure and content. It is a critical study aimed at both general readers and readers with more specific interests, and should enrich their understanding of the histories of Scouting, youth, citizenship education, the colonies, the British Empire, decolonization, China and Hong Kong. By reconstructing the evolution of Scouting from a niche movement for a handful of British boys before the First World War to a fully indigenized and co-educational mass movement in the post-colonial Hong Kong society, it fills a gap in the historical studies of youth movements around the world. By analyzing how the movement and the (re)construction of its particular brand of citizenship training reflected the development of the community, it adds to our understanding of the political, cultural and social history of Hong Kong, often influenced by that of China. By demonstrating the uniqueness of its evolution in the colonial context, it provides useful comparative insights into the history of imperialism and colonial youth movements. By exploring the choices made by local Scouting since Hong Kong's retrocession of sovereignty to China, it compliments other studies on decolonization and post-colonial citizenship.
