With the aging of the workforce, the reconceptualization of older workers and retirement, the increasing share of women in the labour force, the elimination of mandatory retirement, the fluctuating economy, and the changes to the pension system, barriers to employment for older workers, such as ageism, need to be of central concern. Ageism at Work examines the subjective experiences of older workers in Canada and explores how they negotiate ageism and manage their interactions in the employment setting. Further, this book looks at the intersection between age and gender and the pervasiveness of gendered ageism in the labour market. Finally, this book examines employers’ attitudes towards older workers quantitatively, while also exploring their first-hand accounts about them through qualitative inquiry. Understanding how ageism plays out in the labour market, how it intersects with sexism, and its consequences on a personal level are critical to moving the discussion on discrimination and human rights forward in Canada.

Book excerpt: Older persons are entitled to all the recognized civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to work, since such rights are universal and thus belong to all human beings. However, older workers seeking to find their roles in the workplace are continuously challenged by ageism, which has been defined as the stereotyping, prejudice about and discrimination against people based on their age. Ageism is largely implicit and subconscious, often goes unchallenged and cuts across the life course. As a result, older workers are often devalued by prospective employers as being unproductive, slower and more prone to disease, unfit to learn and a burden to highly technological work environments. Research has consistently found evidence of work-related age discrimination and older persons are continuously faced with age-related stereotyping in the workplace based on unfounded assumptions and beliefs and faulty evidence (e.g., older workers are less motivated and competent at work; older workers are harder to retrain and thus inherently less valuable as employees; and older workers are more expensive to employ). Gendered age discrimination and ableism are both widespread in the workplace.

The impact of ageism on the mistreatment of older adult workers has not to date been examined in depth through the lens of international human rights instruments, nor has discrimination against older adults in the workplace been framed as a form of elder abuse for research and policy making purposes. This book presents a multi-disciplinary exploration of these themes as they affect work and retirement of older adults. It reflects the view that older people who choose to work into old age should be able to do so in enabling work environments that promote dignity and are free of abuse. The contributing authors come from many disciplines, including law, psychology, social work, business, and international affairs. Many are members of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), a non-governmental organization with consultative status at the United Nations, and have devoted their professional careers to increase awareness and understanding of elder abuse in order to prevent it. The editors hope that broadening the framework within which elder abuse in the workplace is understood will stimulate further research, policy and program development to address this troubling social problem.
