Book Race and Gender Differentials

Download or read book Race and Gender Differentials written by Paulo R. A. Loureiro and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article investigates the existence of discrimination in the urban and rural labor markets in Brazil. Tests the hypothesis that returns to education are different for black and white workers, male and female, in the urban and rural sectors. The methodology used allows for the decomposition of the difference in the mean earnings of male and female workers in the urban and rural sectors in a share that can be explained by characteristics such as education, hours of work and experience, and in another share that reflects the existence of discrimination. The analysis is carried out with microdata from the National Household Surveys (PNADs) of 1992 and 1998. The choice of the period of analysis was made with the aim of investigating whether changes in the economic environment affect the standard of returns to education. The results suggest the existence of strong discrimination by gender and race, besides the presence of substantial wage differentials between urban and rural workers.

Download or read book Wage Differential Between Men and Women According to the Condition of Migration written by Natalia Ferreira Batista and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article analyzes wage differences by gender and migration condition. By calculating Duncan's dissimilarity index and the Oaxaca decomposition for wages of male and female migrants and non-migrants, great differences were noted between the southeastern region of Brazil and the rest of the country. The findings show that the great wage differences between genders detected in the migrant population living outside the southeastern region is due to the different valuation on the labor market of male attributes vis-a-vis female. But in the southeast the narrower wage difference between men and women migrants was seen as being due more to the specific characteristics of the workers than to different valuation on the labor market.

Book The Gender Pay Gap

Download or read book The Gender Pay Gap written by Iacopo Morchio and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We document that a large share of the gender pay gap in Brazil is due to women working at lower-paying employers. However, compared with that of men, women's revealed-preference ranking of employers is less increasing in pay. To interpret these facts, we develop an empirical equilibrium search model with endogenous gender differences in pay, amenities, and recruiting intensities across employers. The estimated model suggests that compensating differentials explain one-fifth of the gender pay gap, that there are significant output and welfare gains from eliminating gender differences, and that equal-treatment policies fail to close the gender pay gap.
