Thus, inevitably, it provides a number of case studies of relationships between gender and remittances from around the world, highlighting different processes and practises. Thereby the authors seek to understand the impact of remittances on gender and gender relations, both at the sending as well as at the receiving end. For each case study authors ask how remittances affect gender identities and relationships but also vice versa. Chapters take an open, explorative approach to the relationship between gender and remittance behaviour with the aid of case studies focusing on transnational flows between migrants and countries of origin. With the wide variety of cases this book is able to provide conceptual insights to better understand how remittances affect gender identity, roles and relations (at both the receiving and sending end) and give specific attention to the roles of various actors directly and indirectly involved in remittance sending in current collectively organized remittance schemes from around the world.

It considers the case of migration from Vicente Noble, a rural community in the south-west of the Dominican Republic, to Spain. This area was chosen as it gave rise to the first migratory flows to Spain, predominantly female-led, with women migrating as the main economic providers for their households. It looks at the theoretical context to the study including the feminisation of migration; the historical context of Dominican migration; the migration process including the creation of transnational households and female migratory networks; the sending, receipt, use and management of remittances and changes in gender roles brought about by ths; the sending and receipt of collective remittances and the extent to which these support local development initiatives.

Book excerpt: For this study, UN-INSTRAW has partnered with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in order to examine the impact and potential of remittances for making positive contributions to sustainable and gender-sensitive local development in the rural Philippines. One of the particular features of this investigation was the active participation of an association of Filipina migrant women in Rome, Italy, the Filipino Women's Council (FWC) in the research process. After the first section with the theoretical framework that guided the research process, followed by a brief overview of the study's main objectives and the methodology used in the collection and analysis of the data, part two characterizes the migratory and remittance flows between the Philippines and Italy, and provides an overview of some of the key factors currently working on initiatives linked to migration, remittances and development. This is followed by an analysis of remittances' impact and potential for promoting gender- sensitive sustainable rural development and food security in the communities of origin studied. The fourth section of this paper highlights some of the conclusions reached during a validation workshop in which Filipino migrants in Rome met with the project researchers to discuss this study's results and explore possible initiatives for future action. Finally, the conclusions of this study are presented along with a series of recommendations for future policy and research in this area.--Publisher's description

Thus, remittances made by out-migrants were crucial resources for many households to overcome capital constraints or to ensure their survival. However, no evidence was found that remittances were channeled to economically productive investment. Therefore, policy measures to provide households with income-generating opportunities and encourage the utilization of remittances for development were suggested.
