Book Gender Equality in Colombia

Book excerpt: Achieving gender equality in Colombia is critical to the country's future economic development and social cohesion; yet it remains an ongoing challenge. The government of Colombia recognizes the importance of closing the country's gender gaps and is working on multiple fronts to realize this objective. However, and although preliminary findings indicate that substantial progress has been made over the last two decades, several challenges remain. Using the framework provided by the 2012 World Development Report, this assessment allows identifying the main existing gender gaps across the areas of agency, endowments and economic opportunity, and the major driving factors with regards to households, institutions and markets (chapters one, two, three, and four). Based on this diagnostic, chapter five provides some policy recommendations that may help to close the existing gender gaps.

Book Gender Equality in Colombia

Book excerpt: The OECD review of Gender Equality in Colombia: Towards a Better Sharing of Paid and Unpaid Work is the third in a collection of reports focusing on Latin American and the Caribbean countries, and part of the series Gender Equality at Work. The report compares gender gaps in labour and educational outcomes in Colombia with other countries. Particular attention is put on the uneven distribution of unpaid work, and the extra burden this places on women. It investigates how policies and programmes in Colombia can make this distribution more equitable. The first part of the report reviews the evidence on gender gaps and on what causes these, including the role played by attitudes. The second part develops a comprehensive framework to address these challenges, presenting a broad range of options to reduce the unpaid work burden falling on women, and to increase women's labour income. Earlier reviews in the same collection have looked at gender equality policies in Chile (2021) and Peru (2022).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All societies around the world and through time value beauty highly. Tracing the evolutions of the Colombian standards of beauty since 1845, Michael Edward Stanfield explores their significance to and symbiotic relationship with violence and inequality in the country. Arguing that beauty holds not only social power but also economic and political power, he positions it as a pacific and inclusive influence in a country “ripped apart by violence, private armies, seizures of land, and abuse of governmental authority, one hoping that female beauty could save it from the ravages of the male beast.” One specific means of obscuring those harsh realities is the beauty pageant, of which Colombia has over 300 per year. Stanfield investigates the ways in which these pageants reveal the effects of European modernity and notions of ethnicity on Colombian women, and how beauty for Colombians has become an external representation of order and morality that can counter the pathological effects of violence, inequality, and exclusion in their country.

Book Healing South America A Study of Human Rights Abuses Press Freedom Violations and Gender Inequality in Ecuador and Colombia

Download or read book Healing South America A Study of Human Rights Abuses Press Freedom Violations and Gender Inequality in Ecuador and Colombia written by Dr. Mark O'Doherty and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rule-of-law violations and press freedom violations persist in Ecuador and Colombia; particularly on the Colombia-Ecuador frontier, a region now considered one of the world's most deadliest for journalists - the shocking murder of journalist Javier Ortega, and his two travelling partners Paúl Rivas and Efraín Segarra, underlining this. Gender inequality also seems to be a major challenge in Ecuador and Colombia. According to the Amnesty International Report 2018, violence against women, particularly sexual violence, persisted in Colombia - as well as in Ecuador, as about 90%% of Ecuadorian women who experience violence seem to be reluctant to take action against their perpetrator; because family problems are considered private matters in Ecuador. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in the South America, so that peace and harmony can be manifested in the region. Social challenges - such as crime, poverty and civil unrest - are also explored in this work. Covid-19: Ecuador has been described in April 2020 as emerging as the "epicentre" of the pandemic in Latin America. The city of Guayaquil has been overwhelmed to the point where bodies are being left in the street. The number of deaths is believed to be significantly higher than the official figure due to a low rate of testing, with many thousands of excess deaths reported compared to the equivalent figure for a normal period. From my side I hope that Ecuador is healed from the coronavirus as soon as possible. My prayers are with all people afflicted by the virus, calling on God's help to manifest health and healing in Latin America and the International Community.
