Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Recent research documenting important changes in gender specific offending over past decades has offered women's economic marginalization and the patriarchal capitalist structure of society as important explanations of this phenomenon. This study builds on previous work by further exploring the utility of women's economic marginalization and the elements of the patriarchal capitalist structure of society to understand changing gender differences in crime. Using pooled cross-sectional time series regression analysis I estimate the effect of changes in multiple dimensions of women's economic marginalization and the patriarchal capitalist structure on the changing female percentage of arrests for both violent and property offending in U.S. cities for the time period 1980-2000. Overall, study results offer insight into the unique impact of women's economic marginalization and the patriarchal capitalist structure on the changing female percentage of arrests for various crimes.
