Book Gender Diversity on European Banks Board of Directors

Download or read book Gender Diversity on European Banks Board of Directors written by Ruth Mateos de Cabo and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's corporate world, board diversity has become a relevant topic and gender diversity is an important aspect of board diversity. Our paper aims at bridging the gap between the scarce of studies about women's presence on the boards of directors of banks and the growing importance of the gender diversity as an important topic of board diversity, at a time when a number of European market regulators are considering women quotas on the publicly traded companies' board as a requirement on their Codes of Conduct, and when global crisis in the banking sector is opening up corporate boards to more female candidates in order to gain better corporate governance. The objectives of this paper are twofold: First, to study women's presence on boards of European Union (EU25) banks and identity those determinants that can explain their presence on their boards of directors, and second, try to identify the types of discrimination that are behind this determinants in order to show the economics and policy implications that can be derived of our analysis. In this sense, we have found evidence of different types of discrimination. There are banks that prefer a friendly board and try to avoid hire women directors. We have found also sings of statistical discrimination according to which women would be excluded from the boards of banks with higher risk. Finally, there is also some evidence of the Becker's discrimination, in the sense that banks in more dynamics and competitive markets have a greater presence of women on their boards.

Book Gender Diversity on Boards and Bank Efficiency Across Emerging Europe

Download or read book Gender Diversity on Boards and Bank Efficiency Across Emerging Europe written by Alin Marius Andries and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the impact of gender diversity on bank efficiency using a unique hand-collected dataset specific to a sample of 128 commercial banks from Central and Eastern European countries during the period 2005-2012. Robust findings that account for endogeneity indicate that the absence of women in the boardroom is associated with lower cost and technical efficiency scores, while greater gender diversity among members of banks' boards enhances the efficiency, especially for small banks. Distinguishing between women representation in supervisory and managing boards, we empirically show that strengthening the women participation in less independent or domestic supervisory boards has a positive and significant effect on efficiency. A similar result is indicated by a greater gender diversity in the managing boards of banks with more relaxed governance practices.

Book Quotas for Women on Corporate Boards The Call for Change in Europe

Download or read book Quotas for Women on Corporate Boards The Call for Change in Europe written by Irina Velkova and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate for higher female representation on corporate boards has become particularly intensive during the recent financial crisis. Scholars advocate that women are more risk-averse, more engaged with longer-term issues and tend to draw more attention to governance and ethics. Thus, it is suggested that due to the behavioural differences between men and women, more gender-balanced boards would have prevented a number of financial collapses. This assertion has triggered more detailed analyses of current statistics for women on boards in the European Union. A number of states have implemented various non-binding measures for improving female representation on boards. This brought them acclaim, yet no discernible results. Should we indeed insist to have gender-balanced boards, we need quotas. Evidence is of strong support.

Book Board Diversity in Banks

Download or read book Board Diversity in Banks written by Miroslav Nedelchev and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of paper is to explore the diversity of bank boards as an innovative tool to reduce the effects of the global crisis and as a beginning of long-term sustainable development. The expectations from the diversifying boards are mainly related to improving the quality of decisions, methods of risk management and remuneration of executive directors. The recommended character within the EU for diversity in boards by profession, nationality and gender passed into national policies and corporate practices in the case of Bulgarian banks. The results of the paper reveal that board diversity in Bulgarian banks exceeding those of the EU. The diversity on profession is predominantly; the diversify on nationality has lowest dynamics due to the subordination of Bulgarian banks in European banking groups; and the gender diversity is easiest to measure and difficult to prove motives for diversification. In parallel with the introduction of a diversity of boards, which is acceptable to study, is put the issue of economic and social effects of diversity on the boards.

Book The Impact of Board Gender on Bank Performance and Risk in Emerging Markets

Download or read book The Impact of Board Gender on Bank Performance and Risk in Emerging Markets written by Alin Marius Andries and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the impact of board diversity on the performance and risk of banks. We put an emphasis on identifying features of the board structure that could increase performance and lower the possible losses of banks. Using a unique, hand-collected dataset of 156 banks from Central and Eastern Europe during 2005-2012, we assess whether banks with more female directors or chairwomen display lower risk and higher performance. The analysis first shows that banks with a chairwoman and a higher proportion of women among the members of a bank's board record a higher level of profitability and tend to have a lower level of credit losses. Additionally, the results suggest that the higher proportion of women among members of the bank's boards, on average, the higher the bank stability during the financial crisis. Our results also reveal that the regulatory framework in the host-country affects the relationship between board gender diversity and bank performance and risk.

Book Banking on Women Leaders A Case for More

Download or read book Banking on Women Leaders A Case for More written by Ms.Ratna Sahay and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a new dataset, we measure the large gap between the representation of men and women in leadership positions in banks and bank supervision agencies worldwide. Women occupied less than 2 percent of bank CEOs positions, and less than 20 percent of the board seats in more than 80 percent of the observations across banks over time. Contrary to common perceptions, many low- and middle-income countries have a higher share of women in bank boards and banking supervision agency boards compared to advanced economies. Econometric analysis suggests that, controlling for relevant bank and country-specific factors, the presence of women as well as a higher share of women on bank boards is associated with greater bank stability, as represented by higher z-scores and lower nonperforming loan ratios. We also examine the share of women on boards of banking supervision agencies by compiling a new dataset. We find that it is associated with greater bank stability. Further research is needed to identify specific mechanisms through which these stability benefits are achieved, and to understand the conditions that have facilitated entry of women into leadership roles in banks and supervision agencies.

Book Women on Corporate Boards

Download or read book Women on Corporate Boards written by Maria Aluchna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female presence and involvement on boards improves firm performance, transforms corporate governance and leads to the transition towards more responsible business. Corporate boards are essential bodies for governance and management and their efficiency determines a company’s performance. The board is a crucial element of the corporate governance structure and its efficiency and performance determines the success of the operation and monitoring of the company. The board is viewed as the liaison between providers of capital (shareholders) and managers who use this capital to create value. The board role is to represent, formulate and fulfill the interests and expectations of shareholders as the owners of the companies. The discussion surrounding female participation in business inevitably needs to refer to their presence on corporate boards. It is also a reliable indicator of a gender equality policy and advancement, adopted by countries and companies. The book traces the logic behind the decision patterns of female involvement in governance and management. In particular, it identifies the patterns of women’s presence on corporate boards, with respect to theoretical and conceptual argumentation, policy and regulatory implication, as well as practical adaptation. The phenomenon of women on corporate boards is analyzed in the context of different political, cultural and institutional environments addressing challenges in both developed and emerging economies. The role of female directors is viewed as one of the crucial aspects in corporate governance, adding to the quality of control and management.

Book Corporate Governance Impact on Bank Performance

Download or read book Corporate Governance Impact on Bank Performance written by salma belhaj and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the impact of corporate governance on European bank performance during the period 2002-2011. Using a sample of 73 banks from 11 European countries, we examine the relationship between corporate governance measures more specifically the board size and composition, the gender diversity and the CEO duality on the European bank performance. During the period 2002-2011, our results show that the board size and the gender diversity have a positive and significant impact on bank performance. Large board of directors with more female members led to better bank performance, whereas, the board composition and the CEO duality have no significant effect in explaining the bank performance for the European countries. During the global financial crisis, our findings show that the board size and the board composition are negatively and significantly correlated to the bank performance. Smaller boards of directors with less number of independent (non-executive) directors have outperformed the ones with larger boards and more independent directors during the crisis. However, the gender diversity and the CEO duality have no significant impact on the European bank performance.

Book Board Diversity and Financial Fragility

Download or read book Board Diversity and Financial Fragility written by Hisham Farag and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the recent crisis in European banks, we investigate the influence of board diversity on both financial fragility and performance in European listed banks. We believe that different governance mechanisms may influence female representation in Europe. Moreover, we believe that controlling for bank and time heterogeneity may lead to more robust results. Using data for 99 European banks from 17 countries over the period 2004-2012, we employ the system GMM estimator of dynamic panel data. We find that appointing additional female directors after a critical mass of 23.6% female directors has a negative and significant influence on banks' vulnerability to financial crisis for banks with unitary boards. Moreover, we find that the diversity-financial fragility relationship is also non-linear and that beyond a critical mass of 18.2% and 23.2% female directors, appointing additional female directors to the supervisory and management boards respectively may decrease financial fragility for European banks with dual boards. Furthermore, we find that high risk and more financially fragile banks are less likely to appoint female directors due to the perception that females are more risk averse and would tend not to condone more risky decisions. Our empirical results provide support for the recent calls for more board diversity by various governments and the EU. The relationship between bank risk and board diversity may potentially have important implications for stability and increased confidence in the banking sector.

Book excerpt: This volume, the first to focus exclusively on women serving on corporate boards of directors, provides the latest thinking and research findings on this increasingly important corporate governance issue. It includes censuses of women directors in a number of countries, identifies reasons for their limited numbers, indicates why appointing qualified women to boards offers competitive advantages, and suggests practical ways corporations can attract, recruit and appoint more women board members. Researchers interested in gender and corporate governance issues, companies interested in increasing their numbers of women board members, and women and men serving or hoping to serve on corporate boards will find this book of interest.

Book More Women on Boards

Download or read book More Women on Boards written by Lynne E. Devnew and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Women on Boards: An International Perspective is the seventh volume in the Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice book series. The purpose of this volume is to explore the complexity of issues related to increasing the number of women on boards of directors around the world: how these issues have been understood; how they have been more and less successfully addressed in different countries and industries; and how they are similar, and yet different, as a results of cultural and legal differences. In the Introduction and 18 chapters included in this book, 42 researchers, activists, and practitioners who were raised or work today in at least 17 countries on 6 continents seek to answer the questions: “Why have women on boards?” “Why is adding women to boards so challenging?” “What actions increase the number of women on boards?” and “What can we learn from situations where there are women board members?” In seeking to answer these questions, the authors summarize previously existing research and share the results of their own recent qualitative and quantitative research studies conducted in many different countries. Both “fix the woman” and “fix the society” challenges and solutions are explored. Stories of women who have successfully joined and, in many cases, led boards of directors are shared. It is clear to us, and we believe will be clear to those who read this book, that there is no single program that will lead to gender equality on boards; however we believe that the authors in this volume provide a rich variety of research and well supported suggestions for addressing the challenges. When local cultures are considered and multiple suggestions implemented as appropriate, we are confident we will, together, increase the number of women on boards throughout the world.

Book Gender Diversity in Bank Boardrooms and Green Lending

Download or read book Gender Diversity in Bank Boardrooms and Green Lending written by Leonardo Gambacorta and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do female directors on banks' boards influence lending decisions toward less polluting firms? By using granular credit register data matched with information on firm-level greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensities, we isolate credit supply shifts and find that banks with more gender-diverse boards provide less credit to browner companies. This evidence is robust when we differentiate among types of GHG emissions and control for endogeneity concerns. In addition, we also show that female director-specific characteristics matter for lending behavior to polluting firms as better-educated directors grant lower credit volumes to more polluting firms. Finally, we document that the "greening" effect of the female members in banks' boardrooms is stronger in countries with more female climate-oriented politicians.
