Book excerpt: Gagliarducci and Paserman (2022) study gender differences in cooperative behavior among politicians using information from the U.S. House of Representatives between 1988 and 2010 on (i) the number of co-sponsors on bills and (ii) the share of co-sponsors from the rival party. Through different empirical strategies, they show that women-sponsored bills tend to have more co-sponsors, but the gap is only statistically significant among Republicans. Moreover, Republican women recruit a significantly larger share of co-sponsors from the rival party than Republican men, whereas the opposite is true among Democrats. GP argue that the observed pattern is consistent with a commonality of interest driving cooperation, rather than gender per se, since during this period Republican women were ideologically closer to the rival party than their male colleagues, while female Democrats were further away. We examine the robustness of these findings to (i) the correction of some errors in two control variables of the dataset used by GP and (ii) clustering the standard errors at the individual level, instead of individual-term. These changes have a relatively minor impact on results: most coefficients are still statistically significant and the main conclusions from the analysis are confirmed. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to the 2011-2020 period. The analysis of gender differences in bipartisan cooperation confirms GP's hypothesis that ideological distance plays an important role. However, results are slightly different when we analyze overall cooperation. The gender gap in favor of women is larger in magnitude than in GP and it is statistically significant in several specifications, providing support for the hypothesis that gender also matters for cooperation.

Book excerpt: This paper uses data on bill sponsorship and cosponsorship in the U.S. House of Representatives to estimate gender differences in cooperative behavior. We employ a number of econometric methodologies to address the potential selection of female representatives into electoral districts with distinct preferences for cooperativeness, including regression discontinuity and matching. After accounting for selection, we find that among Democrats there is no significant gender gap in the number of cosponsors recruited, but women-sponsored bills tend to have fewer cosponsors from the opposite party. On the other hand, we find robust evidence that Republican women recruit more cosponsors and attract more bipartisan support on the bills that they sponsor. This is particularly true on bills that address issues more relevant for women, over which female Republicans have possibly preferences that are closer to those of Democrats. We interpret these results as evidence that cooperation is mostly driven by a commonality of interest, rather than gender per se.

Book excerpt: Differences in achievement were investigated for male and female students taught by either cooperative or competitive teaching methods. University undergraduates were randomly assigned to cooperative or competitive teaching conditions. Participants completed mini-assignments either individually in the competitive condition or with a partner in the cooperative condition. All participants completed a multiple-choice test individually. Although there was no difference on the multiple choice achievement test, achievement on the mini-assignments differed in the predicted direction, with females scoring significantly higher in the cooperative as compared to the competitive condition, while males performed roughly equally under both conditions. These findings are congruent with previous research on cooperative learning in elementary and secondary school students.

Here I shed light on this topic by analyzing the totality of studies that my research group has conducted since 2013. This is a dataset of 10,951 observations coming from 7,322 men and women living in the US, recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk, and who passed four comprehension questions to make sure they understand the cooperation problem (a one-shot prisoner's dilemma). It was hypothesized and found that males' satisfaction is dependent on their ability to impose their preferences on their female counterpart within a mixed-gender dyad. In contrast, females' satisfaction is only affected by the degree to which dyad members behave cooperatively. The model is tested within the context of 76 mixed-gender dyads that are in an established relationship. The dyads are sampled from shoppers at a national retailer, and report on their decision-making process as they exit the store. A partial-least-squares (PLS) methodology is used to test for differences in the effects of cooperative and competitive behaviors on males' and females' satisfaction with a dyadic decision.
