Book Body Image

Download or read book Body Image written by Aimé Doiron and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Body Image: Psychological Predictors, Social Influences and Gender Differences opens with a presentation of results of a study on sport-active and sport-inactive adolescents, their perception of body image and their associated eating habits and sport participation motives. Following this, the authors examined the association between feminist beliefs, empowerment, and positive body image through an online sample of 302 British women. Additionally, the authors examine adolescent boys' body image and its relationship to their subjective well-being, as well as the effect of the parent-adolescent relationship on body image and their subjective well-being. The penultimate chapter discusses research findings regarding body image issues in men of color. Risk factors associated with body dissatisfaction in men of color are explored, including a discussion of cultural and race-related factors that may impact the development of body image issues. The "allocentric lock" model of eating disorders is explored in the concluding chapter, providing a rich conceptual framework for elucidating the source of body image disturbance and factors causing patients with eating disorders to be locked in a body that they detest"--

Book Exploring the Impact of Sports Participation on the Body Image and Self esteem of Female Adolescents

Download or read book Exploring the Impact of Sports Participation on the Body Image and Self esteem of Female Adolescents written by Allison C. Maher Mattison and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's western society young women are faced with enormous pressure to be thin and this is linked to high rates of body dissatisfaction, especially among adolescents. A positive body image and self-esteem are two important protective factors against the development of eating disorders. Sports participation has been considered by some to lead to higher levels of self-esteem and a more positive body image. However, research focusing on adolescents remains limited and inconclusive. The current study examined the impact of sports participation on the self-esteem and body image of high school females (n = 50) participating in sports at a recreational level. The impact of participation in extracurricular activities was explored as well. Results indicated that sports participation was correlated with more positive feelings about one's physical appearance as well as overall self-esteem. Participation in extracurricular activities in general was not related to body image or self-esteem. Regression analyses indicated that participation in sports outside of school was the best predictor of overall self-esteem. In this sample, all of the adolescents who participated in sports outside of school also participated in sports at school, suggesting that they benefited from this increase in participation. Given that participation in extracurricular activities was not linked to body image or self-esteem, it appears that participation in sports provides unique benefits for these young females. This study adds to the limited existing literature exploring the impact of recreational sports participation for female adolescents and supports the theory that sports may provide a protective factor for these young women.

Book Female Adolescent Athletes

Download or read book Female Adolescent Athletes written by Sarah A. Dittberner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of the media on young females is a consistent problem: drive for thinness, unrealistic body expectations, and pressure to become something unattainable. Athletic involvement can produce overwhelmingly positive outcomes, countering negative influential media messages. This research was conducted to expand upon the importance of sport participation using a survey. Twenty-six female student athletes from Minnesota participated, all 13-17 years old. Results revealed that athletes did not feel pressured by the media to change their bodies. Athletes are able to challenge the negative impacts of the media and, instead, are discovering what their bodies are capable of doing. Conversely, they generally rated themselves as overweight on a Likert scale, despite the majority of participants (68%) being classified as normal or underweight according to their body mass index. Although sport participation poses numerous benefits (fewer mental health problems, strong academic achievement, and increased chances of staying active in adulthood), the underlying concern of the media's voice on body image still exists. Fortunately, females are becoming more involved in athletics: 69% of participants were involved in more than one sport and 61% were involved in sports 10-12 months of the year. Overall, sports provide valuable, healthy, and long-term opportunities for athletes.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Reader Views Literary Award, Societal Issues and the Reviewers Choice Best Non-fiction Book of the Year, Specialty Awards, Schooled on Fat explores how body image, social status, fat stigma and teasing, food consumption behaviors, and exercise practices intersect in the daily lives of adolescent girls and boys. Based on nine months of fieldwork at a high school located near Tucson, Arizona, the book draws on social, linguistic, and theoretical contexts to illustrate how teens navigate the fraught realities of body image within a high school culture that reinforced widespread beliefs about body size as a matter of personal responsibility while offering limited opportunity to exercise and an abundance of fattening junk foods. Taylor also traces policy efforts to illustrate where we are as a nation in addressing childhood obesity and offers practical strategies schools and parents can use to promote teen wellness. This book is ideal for courses on the body, fat studies, gender studies, language and culture, school culture and policy, public ethnography, deviance, and youth culture.

Book Body Image Self concepts and Self esteem in Male and Female Adolescent Cross country Runners

Download or read book Body Image Self concepts and Self esteem in Male and Female Adolescent Cross country Runners written by Jayne M. McLaughlin and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study was undertaken to assess body image and self-concepts in male and female adolescent cross-country runners. Runners were chosen as the study population because cross-country is a lean sport whereby the size of the body can impact performance. Participants were 175 high school runners including 93 boys (mean age 16 ±1.3 years; body mass index 20.4 ± 1.9) and 82 girls (mean age 15.7 ± 1.3 years; body mass index 20.3 ± 1.9). Participants completed a questionnaire packet comprised of a demographic questionnaire (including self-report of height and weight), the Body-Selflmage Questionnaire (BSIQ) to assess body image in nine different factors, and the Self- Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) to assess self-concept in eight domains, plus global self-worth (self-esteem). The results showed that females were significantly less satisfied with a number of body image factors than males. Females also scored significantly less than males in the self-concept domains of athletic competence and physical appearance. Males and females rated different self-concept domains as the most important to them: Females valued close friendships as most important, while males valued job competence as nost important. Physical appearance and athletic competence were ranked relatively lower for both genders. On the other hand, the relationship of self- esteem to appearance-related factors or domains was stronger for females than for males; the females' self esteem was most closely related to physical appearance of all the eight domains. This correlation was significant for both sexes. The physical appearance domain ofthe SPPA correlated with the overall appearance factor ofthe BSIQ, with the association being stronger for females than for males. The females demonstrated more negative discrepancies than boys in many self-concept domains, suggesting that they were failing at aspects that were important in their lives. In spite of the sex differences, absolute scores obtained on the two instruments demonstrated favorable psychological profiles, not indicative of severe body image problems or eating disorders. However, these results question the different motives of the cross-country runners since athletic competence and physical appearance were ranked relatively low. These runners may not have been representative of serious distance runners. Implications from this study include that the gender differences between males and females, particularly with respect to appearance, need to be handled sensitively by coaches. Furthermore, the discrepancies in the female runners' self-concepts were present yet the females' competencies in the self- concepts were fairly high. This suggests that the girls in the study demonstrated perfectionist-like qualities in having high expectations in all aspects of their lives. Future research should address this notion further, since perfectionism has been recognized as a risk factor for eating disorders"--Document.

Book Adolescence and Body Image

Download or read book Adolescence and Body Image written by Lina A Ricciardelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body image is a significant issue for the majority of adolescents. Anxieties relating to body image can be crippling across both genders, their debilitating effects sometimes leading to mental health problems. This important book is the first of its kind to focus specifically on adolescents, providing a comprehensive overview of the biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors relating to the development of body image. It also provides a detailed review of the measures which can be taken to address body dissatisfaction. Discussing the role of culture, family, peers, schools, sport and media in stimulating a negative body image, the book also examines the different challenges faced by girls and boys as they grow. Eating disorders and body change strategies are also addressed, as well as the challenges faced by youngsters affected by conditions causing visible differences, such as hair loss in cancer patients. The book also presents original research, including the results from a large Australian study of the body image and associated health behaviours of adolescent boys, and the results of a study of current teaching practices relating to body image. Adolescence and Body Image will be ideal reading for students and researchers from a variety of fields, including developmental, health, and social psychology, sociology, and cultural and health studies. Professionals working with young people, whether in education, health promotion or any other allied discipline will also find this book an invaluable resource.
