Book excerpt: Agro-pastoral women make significant contribution to subsistence agriculture and ensuring food security and the mainstay of the farm labour. They work in all aspects of agriculture. In addition to their active engagement in agriculture and livestock production women are responsible for all household chores, mainly as a result of the gender division of Labour. However, agricultural development programs and planning give inadequate attention to women farmers and their needs, and hence their farming activities take place on an ever shrinking resource base with extremely primitive technology and with severely stretched time resources. The model result revealed that adoption of improved sorghum package is biased by gender, where Female Headed Households adopt the package relatively less due to Socio-cultural, Economic, and Institutional factors. Therefore, equal access to resources and extension services, gender sensitive participatory technology development; efficient inputs delivery systems, and linkage to market are essential to accelerate agricultural development through technology adoption.

Book excerpt: This paper examines if there is difference in the adoption of push-pull technology and other sustainable agricultural practices on plots managed by males, females and plots that are jointly-managed by males and females using plot level and gender disaggregated data. The econometric results suggest that there is no gender heterogeneity in the adoption of push-pull technology when the plot manager and plot characteristics are controlled for, suggesting that the technology is gender neutral. However, gender differences in the adoption pattern of other practices are evident. Jointly managed plots are more likely to adopt animal manure and soil and water conservation compared to male and female-managed plots. We do not, however, find any gender differences in the adoption of the rest of the practices. The analysis further shows that there is a significant correlation between push-pull and other sustainable agricultural practices, suggesting that the adoption of agricultural technologies is interrelated. The gender neutrality suggests that a program that considers women in the promotion and dissemination of push-pull technology can enhance the food security status of women and their households.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with land degradation, which is occurring in almost all terrestrial biomes and agro-ecologies, in both low and high income countries and is stretching to about 30% of the total global land area. About three billion people reside in these degraded lands. However, the impact of land degradation is especially severe on livelihoods of the poor who heavily depend on natural resources. The annual global cost of land degradation due to land use and cover change (LUCC) and lower cropland and rangeland productivity is estimated to be about 300 billion USD. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) accounts for the largest share (22%) of the total global cost of land degradation. Only about 38% of the cost of land degradation due to LUCC - which accounts for 78% of the US$300 billion loss – is borne by land users and the remaining share (62%) is borne by consumers of ecosystem services off the farm. The results in this volume indicate that reversing land degradation trends makes both economic sense, and has multiple social and environmental benefits. On average, one US dollar investment into restoration of degraded land returns five US dollars. The findings of the country case studies call for increased investments into the rehabilitation and restoration of degraded lands, including through such institutional and policy measures as strengthening community participation for sustainable land management, enhancing government effectiveness and rule of law, improving access to markets and rural services, and securing land tenure. The assessment in this volume has been conducted at a time when there is an elevated interest in private land investments and when global efforts to achieve sustainable development objectives have intensified. In this regard, the results of this volume can contribute significantly to the ongoing policy debate and efforts to design strategies for achieving sustainable development goals and related efforts to address land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

Book excerpt: Increased participation of women in the agricultural technology adoption decision by farm households is one of the key indicators of gender empowerment in the agricultural sector. This study examines whether women's participation in the household decision to adopt agricultural technology affects the adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), using data collected from 1,267 farm households from two Indian states of Bihar and Haryana. When we considered the sex of the household head (using a dummy variable for male-headed vs female-headed household) as a basis of analyzing the role of gender in the adoption of CSA, we found that women in Haryana had no role in the adoption of CSA. On the contrary, when we considered women's participation in technology adoption decisions as a basis of gender analysis, we found that women's participation in technology adoption decisions in Haryana is much higher as compared to Bihar. Consequently, the likelihood to adopt CSA is higher in Haryana than in Bihar. We also found that wealth, training, and access to extension and market positively influenced CSA adoption. Qualitative analysis shows that women farmers prioritize family food security rather than farm income, and therefore, they are more likely to focus on CSA to ensure food security.

Going beyond the large literature documenting the impact of female education on a range of development outcomes, the paper presents evidence on the impact of women's access to markets (labor, land, and credit) and women's decision-making power within households on poverty reduction and productivity at the individual and household level. The paper also summarizes evidence from studies examining the relationship between gender equality and poverty reduction and growth at the macro level. Although micro level effects of gender equality on individual productivity and human development outcomes have been well documented and have important ramifications for aggregate economic performance, establishing an empirical relationship between gender equality and poverty reduction and growth at the macro level has proven to be more challenging. The paper concludes by identifying priority areas for future research.

This has encouraged the organizers to hold the next edition of the conference physically in Kolkata on a larger scale in the online mode. The pandemic unleashed by Covid 19 in the last two years has shaken the socio-economic foundations of countries and societies to a point where the world cannot be the same as before the pandemic. It has re-focused the world’s attention on the priority of healthcare, and healthcare infrastructure and its innovative management. Inevitably, questions have again been raised more vehemently on what kind of a world we want to live in. Environmental concerns are being pursued with renewed vigour, The urgency of developing new, robust infrastructure relevant for the new world is gaining wider consensus. By 2030, as reports suggest, cyber – physical systems, internet of things and wearable technology will be everywhere and in everything, renewable energy will power the world, and digital entertainment will take centre stage among other developments. The third edition of the conference on “Interdisciplinary Research in Technology and Management” attempts to spotlight the above concerns. The number of tracks on which papers are invited from scholars, researchers, consultants and practitioners to share their interdisciplinary research and consultative work has been enlarged. As before, the papers will be peer reviewed and authors of the selected papers will be invited to present their papers in the IRTM conference. The presentation of papers will be interspersed with Keynote Talks by eminent experts on the theme of the conference or individual domains.

Book excerpt: This paper reviews existing microeconomic empirical literature on gender differences in use, access, and adoption of nonland agricultural inputs in developing countries. This review focuses on four key areas: (1) technological resources, (2) natural resources, (3) human resources, and (4) social and political capital. In general, there has been more empirical research on inorganic fertilizer, seed varieties, extension services, and group membership than on tools and mechanization, life-cycle effects, and political participation. Across input areas, generally men have higher input measures than women; however, this finding is often sensitive to the use of models that control for other background factors, as well as the type of gender indicator implemented in the analysis. We find few studies that meet our inclusion criteria outside Sub-Saharan Africa. Finally, future directions, opportunities, and recommendations for microeconomic gender analysis of nonland agricultural inputs are discussed.
