ICTs can have profound implications for women and men in terms of employment, education, health, environmental sustainability, and community development. Because of systemic gender biases in ICTs and their applications, women are far more likely than men to experience discrimination in the new information society. In spite of this, resource-poor and non-literate women and their organizations are aware of the power of information technologies and communication processes, and are using them to advance their basic needs and strategic interests, improve their livelihoods, and help them achieve their human rights. Gender and ICTs for Development brings together case studies about women and their communities in developing countries and how they have been influenced by, and have used, ICTs in development. An introduction by Helen Hambly Odame, now at the University of Guelph in Canada, formerly with the International Service for National Agricultural Research, provides a global overview of the issues, and a framework for responding to the case studies. Understanding the environmental roles and responsibilities of women and men is critical to sustainable resource management practices. The chapters in the book reflect experiences with mainstreaming gender and women's issues in natural resources management. The introductory paper, focusing on the history and current status of gender and natural resources management, is followed by five further papers presenting cases of this approach, written by experts and practitioners from different parts of the world. The papers examine diverse natural resources from different perspectives, ranging from the household and community level to national and regional policy. They examine the security of women's rights to common property resources and land in West Africa; mainstreaming gender in water policy and institutions in Gujarat, India; gender-responsive planning in wetland development in Uganda; empowering women in managing natural resources in mountain areas of the Hundu-Kush Himalayas of Pakistan; and the development of gender policies for environmental ministries in Mesoamerica. But little is known about how women smallholder farmers experience diverse ethical standards, or whether and how standards reflect their values, local cultural and environmental contexts, or priorities for achieving sustainable livelihoods. Linking gender, smallholder livelihoods and global ethical trade regulations, this book reveals that multiple understandings of social justice, environmental sustainability and well-being – or ethicality – exist in parallel to those institutionalized in ethical trade schemes. Through an in-depth case study of smallholder subsistence and French bean farming in Kenya, the book grounds the analysis of livelihoods, gender and ethical trade in women smallholders’ perspectives, links the macro level of markets with the micro level of livelihoods, and engenders relations of power, structure and agency in food networks. It brings together disparate bodies of theory to illustrate the knowledge, strategies and values of women smallholder farmers that are often beyond the scope of ethical trade regulations. It also provides a challenging new vision for doing food systems research.
