Research on gender and green governance in other disciplines has focused mainly on women's near absence from forestry institutions. This interdisciplinary book turns that focus on its head to ask: what if women were present in these institutions? What difference would that make? Would women's inclusion in forest governance - undeniably important for equity - also affect decisions on forest use and outcomes for conservation and subsistence? Are women's interests in forests different from men's? Would women's presence lead to better forests and more equitable access? Does it matter which class of women governs? And how large a presence of women would make an impact? Answers to these questions can prove foundational for effective environmental governance. Yet they have hardly been empirically investigated. While forestry is widely considered a masculine domain, a significant portion of the literature on gender and development focuses on the role of women, not men. This book addresses this gap and also highlights how there are significant, demonstrable differences in masculinities from forest to forest. The book develops a simple conceptual framework for considering masculinities, one which both acknowledges the stability or enduring quality of masculinities, but also the significant masculinity-related options available to individual men within any given culture. The author draws on her own experiences, building on her long-term experience working globally in the conservation and development worlds, also observing masculinities among such professionals. The core of the book examines masculinities, based on long-term ethnographic research in the rural Pacific Northwest of the US; Long Segar, East Kalimantan; and Sitiung, West Sumatra, both in Indonesia. The author concludes by pulling together the various strands of masculine identities and discussing the implications of these various versions of masculinity for forest management. Book excerpt: Despite the importance of forests for global processes and the tradition of forest management by local Amazonian peoples, there is not much available literature on gender and forests in the Amazon region. Yet gender roles and relationships are important components of key emerging forest-related issues, such as climate change and the differential risks and opportunities faced by women and men in different contexts. This paper reviews recent literature (in English, Spanish and Portuguese) that addresses gender and forests in Amazonia, focusing on: property rights in Amazonian territories and communities; diverse and changing gender relations; forest management programs; and womens participation in social movements and organizations. The review finds significant historical, sociocultural and material barriers to gender equity and to womens full participation in sustainable management of Amazonian forests, and a relative lack of focus on gender in forest management programs, despite promising examples. The most important finding was that, over the past two decades, women from different Amazonian social groups have become increasingly organized, enhancing their rights, levels of participation and empowerment. More research is needed to understand the variability of gender relations and rights in different Amazonian contexts, and how they are changing. Research is also needed to understand and support efforts to improve gender equity in rights to resources and income and participation in key community and societal decisions on the future of Amazonian forests and their peoples.

Book excerpt: "This book aims to assess how the Co Tu peoples, an ethnic minority living in the central region of Vietnam, benefit from participation in a benefit sharing mechanism which allows legal collection of non-timber forest products inside special use forests. The research also examines social and cultural influences which impact on cultural harvesting and gender relations in the commune and households, particularly in regards to local rights and roles in harvesting the products. The results indicate that benefits from collecting non-timber forest products after introduction of the benefit sharing mechanism were insignificant when compared with before its introduction. Furthermore, development activities under the benefit sharing mechanism did not have any impact on local people, in terms of diversification of livelihood strategies, nor did it increase household income. Women, in particular, faced limitations in participating in the benefit sharing mechanism's program, as a result of strong customary laws within their ethnic group. However, the benefit sharing mechanism did increase women's knowledge on equal rights and roles in access to and control over forest resources, and their sense of responsibility in forest management and conservation"--Back cover.

We divide gender methods into three main approaches, based on the availability of resources. In the first section, we provide a brief discussion of theory and method. Then, after discussing some all-purpose methods, we classify methods loosely into categories of ‘quick and [more or less] dirty’; systematic ‘academic’ studies; and collaborative studies. We argue that although there is legitimate space for all three approaches, the last is the most likely to result in long-term and meaningful improvements in forests and human well being.

This research aimed to assess the participation and benefit sharing from the gender perspectives in community-based forest management programs in Chitwan district of Nepal. The study revealed that role of the women is confined to plantation and silvi-cultural activities where as men are more involved harvesting, distribution and management activities. Although women were able to get representation through the reserve seats in CFUG EC, the decision making was influenced by the men in the mixed CFUG group. Even though the policy aims to improve participation of women in decision making, still various factors affect their participation and decision making capacities. Overall, it is seen that the CFUGs have contributed to the development at community level but still the CFUGs are not able to contribute effectively at the household level.
