Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book The Role of Self efficacy Depression Externalizing Problems and Gender in Alcohol Use Among American Indian Youth of Northern Plains Tribes

Download or read book The Role of Self efficacy Depression Externalizing Problems and Gender in Alcohol Use Among American Indian Youth of Northern Plains Tribes written by Inga Mileviciute and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the role of self-efficacy, depression, externalizing problems, and gender in alcohol use among American Indian (AI) youth from the North American plains. Participants for this study included 140 (51 boys and 89 girls) adolescents, with an age range of 13-18 ( M = 14.6) years of age. A corroborative survey was also completed by 99 (38 boys and 61 girls) of the students' parents/guardians. Although low scores on measures of both social and academic self-efficacy predicted higher depressive symptoms for girls, neither self-efficacy nor depression predicted higher alcohol use. Moreover, depression did not mediate the relationship between low social and academic self-efficacy and substance use among AI girls. For AI boys, low self-efficacy for resisting negative peer influences and externalizing problems independently predicted alcohol use; however, the mediational model was not found to be significant. Models including both genders indicated that self-efficacy in the academic and resisting negative peer influences domains directly and indirectly (via externalizing behaviors) predicted alcohol use among adolescents. Additionally, although depression did not have a direct relationship with alcohol use, it had an indirect influence via externalizing behaviors when both genders were included in the model. The present study underscores the importance of self-efficacy beliefs and their influence on engaging in problematic externalizing behaviors and alcohol consumption among AI adolescents.

Book Young Adult Drinking Styles

Download or read book Young Adult Drinking Styles written by Dominic Conroy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together cutting-edge contemporary research and discussion concerning drinking practices among young adults (individuals aged approximately 18-30 years old). Its chapters showcase an interdisciplinary range of perspectives from psychology, sociology, criminology, geography, public health and social policy. The contributors address themes including how identity becomes involved in young adult drinking practices; issues relating to the non-consumption of alcohol within friendship groups; and the role of social context, religious and ethnic orientation, gender identity, and social media use. In doing so, they highlight changing trends in alcohol consumption among young people, which have seen notably fewer young adults consuming alcohol over the last two decades. In acknowledging the complex nature of drinking styles among young adults, the contributors to this collection eschew traditional understandings of young adult drinking which can pathologise and generalise. They advocate instead for an inclusive approach, as demonstrated in the wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, cultural perspectives, methods and international settings represented in this book, in order to better understand the economic, socio-cultural and pharmacological crossroads at which we now stand. This book will appeal in particular to researchers, theorists, practitioners and policy makers working in the alcohol and drugs field, public health and health psychology, in addition to students and researchers from across the social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Adolescent Development fills a gap in the literature on adolescent development and behaviour: all of the authors of the various chapters were invited to include as many findings on European adolescents as possible. Through this specific emphasis, the handbook provides a complement to other reviews of the literature that are mostly based on North American samples. The contributors are all eminent researchers in the field and the individual chapters cover their specific areas of expertise. Theories of adolescence, along with emotional, physical and cognitive issues, are explored. Topics covered include families, peer relations, school and leisure time, as well as problem areas such as depression, drug consumption and delinquency. Handbook of Adolescent Development also incorporates a comprehensive review of the literature in the area and considers avenues for future research. This multidisciplinary text will be of interest to those studying and researching in the fields of developmental psychology, sociology, demography, epidemiology and criminology.

Book The Impact of Parental Involvement Socioeconomic Status Academic Support and Gender on Adolescent Alcohol Use

Download or read book The Impact of Parental Involvement Socioeconomic Status Academic Support and Gender on Adolescent Alcohol Use written by Connie Meza and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of parental involvement, socioeconomic status, academic support, and gender on adolescent alcohol use. Data was obtained from 2,799 adolescents ages 12-17 who participated in the 2011 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The independent variables utilized in this study were parental involvement, socioeconomic status, academic support, and gender. The dependent variable was adolescent alcohol use. The results of the study indicate that there is a correlation between parental involvement, socioeconomic status, academic support, and gender in predicting alcohol consumption amongst adolescents. The results revealed that being male, not having an adult around during after school hours, and the lack of academic support were significant predictors of adolescent alcohol use. Future studies should investigate different factors that may also have an influence on adolescent alcohol use. Furthermore, the prevalence of adolescent alcohol use is increasing rapidly in our society. Social workers and other professionals in the helping field should collaboratively work to help implement effective education, awareness, prevention, and intervention programs needed to address this social issue.

  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Children s Bioethics written by Maya Sabatello and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only scant attention has been given to the issue of childrena (TM)s bioethics. Even when such a discourse took place, it hardly touched upon children as social agents. In this novel work, Maya Sabatello looks at the a oebody politicsa of religious and cultural medical practices - from a oeharmful traditional practicesa to genetic engineering. Building on literature from medical anthropology, cultural studies, disability studies, social sciences, and law, she explores the international discourse on childrena (TM)s bioethics from a previously uncharted child-centered approach. In light of the existing multiculturalism, she contends that in the discourse on children's bioethics, not only must the medical, social and, anthropological nexus of the child be taken into account, but that incorporating identity claims into the legal discourse is also essential for the childa (TM)s voice to be heard.
