Download or read book Gem Stones and Their Distinctive Characters Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Herbert Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gem-Stones and Their Distinctive Characters Eauty, durability, and rarity: such are the three cardinal Virtues of a perfect gem-stone. Stones lacking any Of them cannot aspire to a high place in the ranks Of precious stones, although it does not necessarily follow that they are of no use for ornamental purposes. The case of pearl, which, though not properly included among gem-stones, being directly produced by living agency, yet holds an honoured place in jewellery, constitutes to some extent an exception, since its incontestable beauty atones for its comparative want Of durability. Book Gems and Precious Stones

Download or read book Gems and Precious Stones written by Henry G. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems and Precious Stones: With Descriptions of Their Distinctive Properties; The Methods for Determining Them, &C In the preparation of the following notes on "Gems and Precious Stones" for re-publication, in a form more suited to the requirements of the general public, it has been recognised that many who feel an interest in these useful and valuable minerals may have had but little scientific training, and whose knowledge of gems only extends to those cut and polished specimens used in articles of adornment. The endeavour has, therefore, been made to simplify the information, by ignoring scientific expressions and highly technical terms as much as possible, but where the use of these was unavoidable, explanatory notes have been added to elucidate their meaning. It may be well to mention that the natural minerals have but little resemblance to the finished gems as prepared for sale, and while an attempt has been made to convey the meaning and appearance of simple crystalline forms in the four principal systems, it must be understood that it is seldom that the natural crystals are perfect in form, or regular in appearance. This might tend to mislead one little acquainted with the laws that govern form in minerals, although a little consideration would enable one to place a crystallized specimen in its proper system; the diamond, the zircon, and the sapphire for instance, could not be mistaken for each other when found crystallized, although, perhaps, identical in colour. In water-worn specimens, of course, other tests have to be applied, these are fully described in the following pages, and the differences pointed out between gems resembling each other in some respects. The methods adopted in determining the physical properties of minerals are also fully explained. It has been attempted, by introducing well authenticated historical facts, to enliven an otherwise rather dry subject with interesting narrative, much of which has been obtained from the information collected and published by Messrs. Streeter, Emanuel, King, Dieulafait, Kunz, Burnham, and others. To the authors of these works my obligations are due. While endeavouring to make the information of some educational value, it must be understood that no attempt has been made to write for those who are already scientifically acquainted with the subject, as they are well provided for by very many works of reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diamonds and Precious Stones: Their History, Value, and Distinguishing Characteristics, With Simple Tests for Their Identification At the time that the African diamond'fields were dis covered there was only one diamond cutter in London. Dutchmen were accordingly engaged to work in London from Monday morning till Friday sunset, and they were 1 to receive 10 per week each man. There was a very large supply of rough diamonds to be cut, so they struck several times successfully for higher wages. They would allow no person to be in the room that they worked in, being afraid the secrets of their art might be discovered. At lest they demanded 18 per week each man, when they were dis charged and English precious gem cutter-aware put at the I work. At first they were only able after a deal of trouble to cut a class of diamond in one month which they could 1 now cut in about four days. As soon as it was clearly proved that Englishmen had once more gained the art, the l Worshipful Company of Turners had their attention called 3 to it by their Past Masters, the late Professor Tennant, 3 the Queen's Mineralogist, and Mr. John 'jones.' They at once decided to give English cutters every encourage i ment, and have, with the' valuable assistance of the Baroness and Mr. Burdett-coutts, who are both members of this company, offered money awards in competition against the Dutch for the best cut diamonds. After several contests the Englishmen gained the first prize and most' of the others. Great credit and thanks are due to this company and the Baroness and Mr. Burdett - Coutts for giving such valuable assistance to this industry.
