Book Abraham Geiger s Liberal Judaism

Download or read book Abraham Geiger s Liberal Judaism written by Ken Koltun-Fromm and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German rabbi, scholar, and theologian Abraham Geiger (1810--1874) is recognized as the principal leader of the Reform movement in German Judaism. In his new work, Ken Koltun-Fromm argues that for Geiger personal meaning in religion -- rather than rote ritual practice or acceptance of dogma -- was the key to religion's moral authority. In five chapters, the book explores issues central to Geiger's work that speak to contemporary Jewish practice -- historical memory, biblical interpretation, ritual and gender practices, rabbinic authority, and Jewish education. This is essential reading for scholars, rabbis, rabbinical students, and informed Jewish readers interested in Conservative and Reform Judaism. Published with the generous support of the Lucius N. Littauer Foundation.

Book Social Imagery in Middle Low German

Download or read book Social Imagery in Middle Low German written by Cordelia Hess and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social imagery during the Late Middle Ages was typically considered to be dominated by the three orders oratores, bellatores, laboratores as the most common way of describing social order, along with body metaphors and comprehensive lists of professions as known from the Danse macabre tradition. None of these actually dominates within the vast genre of lay didactical literature. This book comprises the first systematic investigation of social imagery from a specific late medieval linguistic context. It methodically catalogues images of the social that were used in a particular cultural/literary sphere, and it separates late medieval efforts at catechization in print from the social and religious ruptures that are conventionally thought to have occurred after 1517. The investigation thus compliments recent scholarship on late medieval vernacular literature in Germany, most of which has concentrated on southern urban centres of production. The author fills a major lacuna in this field by concentrating for the first time on the entire extant corpus of vernacular print production in the northern region dominated by the Hanseatic cities and the Middle Low German dialect.

Book Die Kartause als Text Raum mittelalterlicher Mystik Rezeption

Download or read book Die Kartause als Text Raum mittelalterlicher Mystik Rezeption written by Gilbert Fournier and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Three Blessings

  • Author : Yoel Kahn
  • Publisher : OUP USA
  • Release : 2011-01-20
  • ISBN : 0195373294
  • Pages : 237 pages

Download or read book The Three Blessings written by Yoel Kahn and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the traditional Jewish liturgy, a man thanks God daily for not having been made a gentile, a woman, or a slave. Yoel Kahn traces the history of this prayer from its extra-Jewish origins to the present, demonstrating how different generations and communities understood the significance of these words.Marginalized and persecuted groups used this prayer to mark the boundary between "us" and "them," affirming their own identity and sense of purpose. After the medieval Church seized and burned books it considered offensive, new, coded formulations of the three blessings emerged as forms of spiritual resistance. Book owners voluntarily expurgated the passage to save the books from being destroyed, creating new language and meaning while seeking to preserve the structure and message of the received tradition. During the Renaissance, Jewish women defied their rabbis and declared their gratitude at being "made a woman and not a man." And, as Jewish emancipation began in the nineteenth century, Jews again had to balance fealty to historical practice with their place in the world. Seeking to be recognized as modern and European, early modern Jews rewrote the liturgy to suit modern sensibilities and identified themselves with the Christian West against the historical pagan and the uncivilized infidel. The Three Blessings is an insightful and wide-ranging study of one of the most controversial Jewish prayers, showing its constantly evolving language, usage, and interpretation over the past 2,000 years.
