Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the brain's capacity for change When neuroscientist Susan Barry was fifty years old, she experienced the sense of immersion in a three dimensional world for the first time. Skyscrapers on street corners appeared to loom out toward her like the bows of giant ships. Tree branches projected upward and outward, enclosing and commanding palpable volumes of space. Leaves created intricate mosaics in 3D. Barry had been cross-eyed and stereoblind since early infancy. After half a century of perceiving her surroundings as flat and compressed, on that day she saw the city of Manhattan in stereo depth for first time in her life. As a neuroscientist, she understood just how extraordinary this transformation was, not only for herself but for the scientific understanding of the human brain. Scientists have long believed that the brain is malleable only during a "critical period" in early childhood. According to this theory, Barry's brain had organized itself when she was a baby to avoid double vision - and there was no way to rewire it as an adult. But Barry found an optometrist who prescribed a little-known program of vision therapy; after intensive training, Barry was ultimately able to accomplish what other scientists and even she herself had once considered impossible. Dubbed "Stereo Sue" by renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks, Susan Barry tells her own remarkable journey and celebrates the joyous pleasure of our senses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author claims that she had a spiritual experience at the age of thirty-four that gave some unity to her life. She experienced the gaze of the Crucified Christ in a very powerful way. This is where the name of the book comes from. The book contains a theological reflection on the gaze of God, but it is also the autobiography of the author, and it includes references to the people, the music, the movies, the books, and the politics that made her life what it is. The author claims that, throughout her ups and downs, even in sin and illness, she has felt that Christ's gaze has stayed: loving, forgiving, and accompanying.

Book Treasuring the Gaze

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hanneke Grootenboer
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2013-02-05
  • ISBN : 0226309711
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Treasuring the Gaze written by Hanneke Grootenboer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the eighteenth century saw the start of a new craze in Europe: tiny portraits of single eyes that were exchanged by lovers or family members. Worn as brooches or pendants, these minuscule eyes served the same emotional need as more conventional mementoes, such as lockets containing a coil of a loved one’s hair. The fashion lasted only a few decades, and by the early 1800s eye miniatures had faded into oblivion. Unearthing these portraits in Treasuring the Gaze, Hanneke Grootenboer proposes that the rage for eye miniatures—and their abrupt disappearance—reveals a knot in the unfolding of the history of vision. Drawing on Alois Riegl, Jean-Luc Nancy, Marcia Pointon, Melanie Klein, and others, Grootenboer unravels this knot, discovering previously unseen patterns of looking and strategies for showing. She shows that eye miniatures portray the subject’s gaze rather than his or her eye, making the recipient of the keepsake an exclusive beholder who is perpetually watched. These treasured portraits always return the looks they receive and, as such, they create a reciprocal mode of viewing that Grootenboer calls intimate vision. Recounting stories about eye miniatures—including the role one played in the scandalous affair of Mrs. Fitzherbert and the Prince of Wales, a portrait of the mesmerizing eye of Lord Byron, and the loss and longing incorporated in crying eye miniatures—Grootenboer shows that intimate vision brings the gaze of another deep into the heart of private experience. With a host of fascinating imagery from this eccentric and mostly forgotten yet deeply private keepsake, Treasuring the Gaze provides new insights into the art of miniature painting and the genre of portraiture.

Download or read book Jovan s Gaze written by Aaron Dov and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovan's world is small and medieval. It was once ruled by the good kingdom of Esis in the south, and the evil kingdom of Krona in the north. Those kingdoms are now fifteen years gone, victims of magic that escaped the control of the mages who wielded it in a final, devastating war. Now the land of Theris is empty and scarred by plagues of magic; most of the war's survivors, people from both kingdoms, marched eastward into the endless desert in a desperate bid for a new start. They were never seen again. Jovan did not go with them; he lives quietly among a small village of survivors. Jovan also has an obsession; he has become enamored with Skyreach Keep, the seat of power of the old Dark Lords of Krona. After visiting the barren keep too many times, his village casts him out and banishes him to the endless desert. There he must find a new life, or better yet, wither and die under the scorching sun. Jovan marches east, but he does not die. He comes across a small building, filled with technology which is thousands of years ahead of his own. The people who work there speak a foreign yet strangely familiar language; it sounds ever so slightly like the dark tongue of Krona, the language of the enemy. But these strange people know where Jovan comes from, and they understand his language. They are, after all, his descendants, and they trace their ancestors back thousands of years, to an exodus which for Jovan is only fifteen years past. Jovan has walked out of the desert and into the future. And something evil has followed him. - The second novel from writer Aaron Dov, author of The Madman's Clock, Jovan's Gaze is an exciting blend of fantasy and science fiction. With its cursed wolf-warriors and high tech soldiers, towering skyscrapers and looming medieval keeps, Jovan's Gaze is unique combination of genres. Combining his talent for exciting action, fast-paced plots, and detailed worlds full of both sweeping ideals and subtle details, Jovan's Gaze takes the reader on a ride through a fantasy world rife with magic, into a high tech future that is totally unprepared for the terrible things that follow Jovan on his journey.

Book excerpt: There is no crueler cage than the confines of the human mind in this riveting sequel to Menagerie from the New York Times–bestselling author. When their coup of Metzger’s Menagerie is discovered, Delilah Marlow and her fellow cryptids find their newly won freedom brutally stripped away as they are sold into The Savage Spectacle, a private collection of “exotic wildlife.” Specializing in ruthless cryptid cage matches, safari-style creature hunts and living party favors, the Spectacle’s owner, Willem Vandekamp, caters to the forbidden fetishes of the wealthy and powerful. At the Spectacle, any wish can be granted—for the right price. But Vandekamp’s closely guarded client list isn’t the only secret being kept at the Spectacle. Beneath the beauty and brutality of life in the collection lie much darker truths, and no one is more determined than Delilah to strip the masks from the human monsters and drag all dark things into the light. “Oh what a disturbingly dark, and haunting world Rachel Vincent has crafted! Spectacle is definitely not for the fainthearted. However, it is the characters who are the heart and soul of Spectacle. The world they live in is harsh and brutal but it is the strength, love, and loyalty we see emerging out of the darkness that makes Spectacle so significant. I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the third book of the Menagerie series!” —Fresh Fiction “A bravura example of fantasy series-building.” —Publishers Weekly
