Book excerpt: The gay community has experienced the greatest impact of AIDS in New Zealand. Through the two decades since the HIV epidemic struck here, gay and bisexual men have had to come to terms with death: either their own or that of their friends and loved ones. They have had to reinvent sexual practice and learn to keep themselves and their partners safe. This book tells the story of that journey. It aims to give the reader an overview of gay men's lives in the era of AIDS, their sexual practices and the strategies they have used in dealing with the epidemic. Book excerpt: A remarkable anthology of queer New Zealand voices. We became teenagers in the nineties when New Zealand felt a lot less cool about queerness and gender felt much more rigid. We knew instinctively that hiding was the safest strategy. But how to find your community if you're hidden? Aotearoa is a land of extraordinary queer writers, many of whom have contributed to our rich literary history. But you wouldn't know it. Decades of erasure and homophobia have rendered some of our most powerful writing invisible. Out Here will change that. This landmark book brings together and celebrates queer New Zealand writers from across the gender and LGBTQIA+ spectrum with a generous selection of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and much, much more. From established names to electrifying newcomers, the cacophony of voices brought together in Out Here sing out loud and proud, ensuring that future generations of queers are afforded the space to tell their stories and be themselves without fear of retribution or harm.

Book Worlds in Collision

  • ISBN : 9780864734389
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Worlds in Collision written by Laurie Guy and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from 1960 to 1986 was distinguished by the debate over decriminalization of sexual acts between males. In the 1960s homosexual men faced prison sentences if they were sexually active, and so they made themselves invisible. By 1986 they were demanding their rights and the nation's attention. This change had come after years of debate. The New Zealand Homosexual Law Reform Society and the gay liberation movement actively sought reform. Many within society actively opposed it, and the issue became a catalyst for a significant rift in the churches. Intense lobbying and vehement opposition marked the fifteen months before the Homosexual Law Reform Bill was passed in July 1986. Based on 22 interviews with important participants in the debates, as well as extensive research in archives and published material, Worlds in Collision is the first time this important story has been told. It is a major contribution not only to the international literature on the history of homosexuality but also to our understanding of New Zealand society in the later twentieth century.

Book Crime Law and Justice in New Zealand

Download or read book Crime Law and Justice in New Zealand written by Greg Newbold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Law and Justice in New Zealand examines the recent crime trends and the social, political, and legal changes in New Zealand from the end of the twentieth century to the present. Serving as the only New Zealand–specific criminal justice text, this book takes a direct look at what is unique about the country’s criminal justice system and recent crime trends. Crime rates peaked in the early 1990s and have fallen since. Newbold considers why this happened through factors such as economy, ethnic composition, changing cultural trends, and legislative developments in policing and criminal justice. He unpacks various types of crime separately—violent crime, property crime, drug crime, gang crime, organised crime, etc.—and examines each in terms of the various complex factors affecting it, using illustrative examples from recent high-profile cases. The cover photo for Crime, Law and Justice in New Zealand was taken by Jono Rotman.
