Download or read book The Sexual and Gender Politics of Sport Mega Events written by Heather Sykes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging new study examines gender and sexuality in relation to the ‘roving colonialism’ of sport mega-events. Built around four case studies in postcolonial and settler colonial contexts—the Olympics in Vancouver, London and Sochi and soccer fans in the Egyptian revolution—the book examines sporting 'homonationalism' and anti-colonial resistance. The first part discusses different moments of ‘homonationalism’ in sport. The second part explores how indigenous and anti-colonial protests against mega-sport events lead to different views about gender and sexuality politics in sport. It offers a critical counter-narrative to the view that gay and lesbian inclusion in global sporting events is simply a matter of universal human rights. The book calls for LGBT social movements in sport to move away from complicity with neoliberalism, nationalism and colonial-racial logics, particularly Islamophobia, toward a decolonial politics of solidarity. Theoretically sophisticated and empirically grounded, this book draws together important threads in the contemporary study of sport to illuminate the relationship between sport and wider society. It will be fascinating reading for any student or researcher interested in the sociology of sport, Olympic studies, gender and sexuality studies, postcolonial studies, indigenous studies, settler colonial studies or the politics of race and inclusion.

Download or read book God vs Gay written by Jay Michaelson and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passionate argument for LGBTQ equality within religious communities—“a book for our times and a book for the ages” (EDGE) The myth that the Bible forbids homosexuality—the myth of “God versus Gay”—is behind some of the most divisive and painful conflicts of our day. In this provocative and game-changing book, scholar and activist Jay Michaelson shows that the Bible does not prohibit same-sex intimacy but does quite the opposite. In fact, the vast majority of the Bible’s teachings support the full equality and dignity of LGBTQ people, from the first flaw it finds in creation (“It is not good for a person to be alone”) to the way religious communities grow through reflection and conscience. Michaelson argues passionately for equality—not despite religion, but because of it. With close readings of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, the latest data on the science of sexual orientation, and a sympathetic, accessible, and ecumenical approach to religious faith, Michaelson makes the case that sexual diversity is part of the beauty of nature. The recognition of same-sex families will strengthen, not threaten, the values religious people hold dear. Whatever your views on religion and sexual diversity, God vs. Gay is a plea for a more compassionate, informed conversation—and a first step toward creating one.
Download or read book The Gay Agenda written by Dr. Ronnie Floyd and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gay Agenda: It’s Dividing the Family, the Church, and a Nation is a bold defense of traditional marriage and the authority of Scripture relating to these controversial issues both in the Church and in families across the nation. As same-sex “unions” and court challenges to the bans on these unions sweep the country, reasoned voices from the Church are needed. Now, one has emerged to expose the agenda that the homosexual lobby is trying to impose on society. Can we still love people in this lifestyle, but hate the sin? Does the Bible say anything about gay clergy? What impact is this agenda having on the traditional American family? What impact will this agenda have on our nation? What about activist judges and the proposed marriage amendment? Dr. Ronnie W. Floyd tackles the problems confronting the traditional family with this issue - in schools, the workplace, the church, and even within your home. Revealing the progress the gay agenda has already made, Dr. Floyd also examines the legal background and challenges dominating media reports almost daily. Floyd highlights why Christians need to be aware of this issue and its assault upon the faith, as well as showing from Scripture that the homosexual lifestyle is definitely at odds with God’s plan for the family. With a balanced, methodical, and loving manner, Floyd issues an urgent call to pastors, parents, and educators: passive response won’t work - only prayer and engagement with the issues will be effective.

Download or read book All the Rage written by Suzanna Danuta Walters and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Splashed against the tumultuous Clinton years and framed by the clash between gay political might and anti-gay activism, All the Rage presents the first authoritative guide to the new gay visibility. From the public outing of Ellen DeGeneres to the vicious murder of Matthew Shepard, gay lives and images have moved onto the center stage of American public life. Lesbians and gay men are indeed everywhere, from television sitcoms to Budweiser ads, from the White House to the Magic Kingdom. Combining personal stories with incisive analysis, Suzanna Danuta Walters chronicles this historic moment in our culture, arguing that we live in a time when gays are seen, but not necessarily known. Many consider the new gay visibility a sign of social acceptance, while others charge that it is mere window dressing, obscuring the dogged persistence of discrimination. Walters moves beyond these positions and instead argues that these realities coexist: gays are simultaneously depicted as the sign of social decay and the chic flavor of the month. Taking on the common wisdom that visibility means progress, All the Rage maps the terrain on which gays are accepted as witty accessories in movies, gain access to political power, and yet still fall into constrictive stereotypes. Walters warns us with clarity and wit of the pitfalls of equating visibility with full integration into the fabric of American society. From the playful TV fantasies of lesbian weddings on Friends to the very real obstacles confronting gay marriage, from the award-winning comedy Will & Grace to Bible-thumping radio superhost Dr. Laura, All the Rage takes on naive celebrants and jaded naysayers alike. With a sophisticated mix of caution and optimism, it provides an illuminating guide through these exciting, controversial times.
Download or read book Gender and Tourism Sustainability written by Claudia Eger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between gender and sustainability in tourism. Whilst an extensive body of work exists in the areas of gender and sustainability, these two fields of knowledge are seldom combined to examine tourism phenomena. When we look at the evolution of tourism, we see that sustainability has become an essential element in educational programmes, policy making and strategic considerations for organisations and destinations. Whilst the beginnings of tourism sustainability were challenging, presently, its relevance is seldom questioned. However, this situation is not the case with gender research. Although gender theorising and research have existed for over a century, and a rich legacy of knowledge exists on this topic, meaningful and respectful engagement with this line of scholarship is thus far peripheral in tourism studies. The aim of this book is to reflect on and rethink the intersection of gender and tourism sustainability through the lens of gender theory and feminist epistemology to stay with the trouble and devise pathways for sustainability gender knowledge. This book will be of great interest to students, researchers, and academics in tourism, gender and sustainability, as well as tourism management. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

Yet when it comes to sport, there is no shortage of debate: stereotypes regarding sexuality, race, gender, and children have been hotly contested by critics for over 40 years. Even today, sport is one of the very few socially accepted sites of violence, intense competition and controlled forms of social disorder. Battleground: Sports presents the 100 most contentious public and private controversies of the sports world. Highlighted throughout are debates surrounding ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and social identity, sports fan behavior, as well as the role of governments and corporations. Engaging and accessible to a wide variety of readers, this fascinating reference illustrates how sports controversies reflect the historically enduring and changing nature of our broader cultures, and the social battles we engage on a day-to-day basis surrounding the struggles for equality, debates about social violence, the ethics of competition, the politics of civic life, the creation of global communities, and the State's role in protecting citizens. Entries contain an array of thoughtful perspectives on historic and current controversies, and allow readers to formulate their own conclusions. Enhanced with a timeline, a thorough guide of print and electronic resources for high school and undergraduate student research, this one-stop reference goes beyond the newspaper headlines to provide readers with a guide map for understanding what sport controversies teach us about our culture and ourselves.
