Book The New Gay for Pay

Download or read book The New Gay for Pay written by Julia Himberg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television conveys powerful messages about sexual identities, and popular shows such as Will & Grace, Ellen, Glee, Modern Family, and The Fosters are often credited with building support for gay rights, including marriage equality. At the same time, however, many dismiss TV’s portrayal of LGBT characters and issues as “gay for pay”—that is, apolitical and exploitative programming created simply for profit. In The New Gay for Pay, Julia Himberg moves beyond both of these positions to investigate the complex and multifaceted ways that television production participates in constructing sexuality, sexual identities and communities, and sexual politics. Himberg examines the production stories behind explicitly LGBT narratives and characters, studying how industry workers themselves negotiate processes of TV development, production, marketing, and distribution. She interviews workers whose views are rarely heard, including market researchers, public relations experts, media advocacy workers, political campaigners designing strategies for TV messaging, and corporate social responsibility department officers, as well as network executives and producers. Thoroughly analyzing their comments in the light of four key issues—visibility, advocacy, diversity, and equality—Himberg reveals how the practices and belief systems of industry workers generate the conceptions of LGBT sexuality and political change that are portrayed on television. This original approach complicates and broadens our notions about who makes media; how those practitioners operate within media conglomerates; and, perhaps most important, how they contribute to commonsense ideas about sexuality.

Download or read book Costly Obedience written by Mark A. Yarhouse and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though we often hear about the "gay problem" today, there is an even deeper problem in the church today--one that we often overlook. The call to follow Christ is a call to costly obedience for all, not just for gay Christians. Far too often, the church has elevated homosexuality above other sins and required a costly obedience from gays that it is unwilling to demand of others. And yet, the answer is not to weaken the demands of obedience. Instead, gay Christians who make the difficult choice to align their lives with the biblical view of sexuality are a gift to the church, reminding all of us that spiritual growth and maturity is costly. There is a price to pay in following Christ and devoting our lives to the call of the gospel, and it is one that we all must pay--gay and straight Christians alike. Through the stories and struggles of gay Christians who are reorienting their lives around the costly obedience required to follow Christ, Mark Yarhouse and Olya Zaporozhets call the church to reorient as well, leaving behind the casual morality that is widespread today to pursue the path of radical discipleship. Unlike any other book on homosexuality and the church, this is a call to examine your life and consider what God is asking you to lay down to take up your cross and follow him.

Book Steel Closets

  • Author : Anne Balay
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2014-04-07

Download or read book Steel Closets written by Anne Balay and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as substantial legal and social victories are being celebrated within the gay rights movement, much of working-class America still exists outside the current narratives of gay liberation. In Steel Closets, Anne Balay draws on oral history interviews with forty gay, lesbian, and transgender steelworkers, mostly living in northwestern Indiana, to give voice to this previously silent and invisible population. She presents powerful stories of the intersections of work, class, gender, and sexual identity in the dangerous industrial setting of the steel mill. The voices and stories captured by Balay--by turns alarming, heroic, funny, and devastating--challenge contemporary understandings of what it means to be queer and shed light on the incredible homophobia and violence faced by many: nearly all of Balay's narrators remain closeted at work, and many have experienced harassment, violence, or rape. Through the powerful voices of queer steelworkers themselves, Steel Closets provides rich insight into an understudied part of the LGBT population, contributing to a growing body of scholarship that aims to reveal and analyze a broader range of gay life in America.

Book The Book of More Delights

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From bestselling author of The Book of Delights and award-winning poet, a book of lyrical mini-essays celebrating the everyday that will inspire readers to rediscover the joys in the world around us. In Ross Gay’s new collection of small, daily wonders, again written over the course of a year, one of America’s most original voices continues his ongoing investigation of delight. For Gay, what delights us is what connects us, what gives us meaning, from the joy of hearing a nostalgic song blasting from a passing car to the pleasure of refusing the “nefarious” scannable QR code menus, from the tiny dog he fell hard for to his mother baking a dozen kinds of cookies for her grandchildren. As always, Gay revels in the natural world—sweet potatoes being harvested, a hummingbird carousing in the beebalm, a sunflower growing out of a wall around the cemetery, the shared bounty from a neighbor’s fig tree—and the trillion mysterious ways this glorious earth delights us. The Book of (More) Delights is a volume to savor and share.

Book excerpt: The hatred of lesbians, gay males, and bisexuals remains an "acceptable" prejudice in our society, despite the widespread damage it causes in all of our lives. Inviting sexual minorities and heterosexual men and women to become allies in the fight against homophobia, the contributors to this anthology explore how homophobia colludes with sexism by forcing people into rigid gender roles; how homophobia causes unnecessary pain and alienation in family relationships; how it works against health-care policy and arts administration that would benefit all members of society; and how homophobia leaves the policies of religious insitutions unfulfilled In both personal and analytical essays, the contributors show how the fight to end homophobia is everyone's fight if we are to bring about a less oppressive and more productive society. They offer concrete suggestions on transforming attitudes, behaviors and institutions.

Book excerpt: Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative is a collection of fifty full-color drawings based on my memories of growing up "different". All along the way of development, I was told I was doing it wrong. Like all gay or creative kids, I knew I was different from the others and they knew it too. I wanted to create this book to help illustrate those moments, but also to help the reader remember their own stories. I wasn't the only little boy who put on something fun and tried to entertain their parent's guests, I'm sure of it. If you grew up with a different point of view, this book is for you. Flip the pages and watch Danny grow from birth to eighteen in fifty drawings. Each page a step in personal discovery. When I grew up there was no help for me. There was no one telling me that I was fine just as I am. I needed to make sure that the adult me sent out the word that you are not only fine but beautiful. Be you. It's your life and the people who love you deserve to know you not the person you play. If you have someone in your life who doesn't fit the mold, I hope this book helps you to see it's OK to be different. Enjoy Danny's growing up. I did! --Dan Crowley, Author & ArtistPraise for Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative "Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative, shows us what it means to grow up heart-open and human. But few saw us that way when we were kids. So Danny, with his winsome humor-filled drawings, reminds us of those wonder years, as we struggled to find our place under the rainbow. I feel like I am coming home again, but this time, in a happy and healed way. Bravo, Danny! Shine on!! --Christopher Radko, award-winning designer "Dan Crowley explores with humor and empathy all the various childhood pitfalls in growing up gay in a less than fabulous world. Many were right out of my childhood, such as spotting a doll you always wanted in the bedroom of a friend's sister. So much of it hit home." --Mel Odom, Artist "Dan Crowley's book, Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative is a wonderful thing. It speaks to children who may need to know they're not different and that their lives are not a mistake. Youngsters who are curious about their own sexuality before even knowing what that word means. And it speaks in a way their straight parents may be unable to because they don't have the words nor the experiences. It does so in a sweet, gentle, and funny way. And adults will learn, too; about same-sex relationships from a "knowing" point of view. This book is a gift in every sense of the word." --Steve Kmetko, award-winning journalist "Dan Crowley has a natural gift for homily, for taking lived experience and expressing stories of love and gratitude, inspiration and grace. He also has a silly, sweet (and slightly wicked) sense of humor. Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative combines personal and universal stories about growing up gay -- the good, the bad, and the embarrassing -- and reminds us it's all worth it, if only we will persevere." --Tom Bachtel, Illustrator, and Caricaturist, Longtime Illustrator fo the New Yorker's Talk of the Town

He has forcibly turned and taken prisoner a young human. Mick has been assigned to affect a rescue and bring Sutter to justice. Dispatching the bad guy turns out to be the easy part of his assignment. Sutter's prisoner, Rio Hardin, turns out to be a smart-mouthed, sassy brat with the face of an angel who takes Mick's heart by storm. He's also a runaway turned hustler who has suffered numerous abuses in the course of his tumultuous life. Bound by his code of honor and determined that Rio be protected at all costs, Mick makes it his personal duty to see to it that no one hurts Rio again. If that includes ignoring the instinctual knowledge that Rio is his mate and Rio's own desire to be with him, so be it. There's only one flaw in his plan. Rio is about to go through his first shift, a very painful process which can only be made tolerable by applying a certain amount of distraction--sexual distraction. Mick has two choices. He can leave Rio in the hands of his very capable brother or he can give in to the mutual heat and need between them and indoctrinate his young charge into the ways of the werewolf.
