Book The European Peasant Family and Society

Download or read book The European Peasant Family and Society written by Richard L. Rudolph and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the peasant household has become a central focal point of social history. This is true not only because the peasant represents the major element of European society through the nineteenth century, but also because many of the main issues in modern historical debate can be studied within the sphere of the peasant family. This book deals with the European peasant family during the period of transformation from agrarian to industrial society, the time called by some the period of protoindustrialization. The essays in this volume explore some of the major issues concerning the influence of the economy, society and institutions on the peasant household and, conversely, the influence of the peasant household on the outside world. Themes dealt with include the ways in which the physical environment and the economy may make for very different family structures and even affect intra-family relationships; the effects of inheritance, marriage and kinship strategies, as well as social pressure, on peasant family structure and demography; the debate about changing gender roles and status; the debate over the manner and effects of class formation; questions of social and political agency; the nature of gender and parent-child relations; the validity of protoindustrial theory; and the role of peasants in initiating industrialization as consumers, producers and as a labor force. In examining these themes, the essays provide both case studies and innovative analysis by preeminent international scholars in the fields of family and women’s history, economic history and demography.

Book Hope a Goat and a Hospital

Download or read book Hope a Goat and a Hospital written by Ben Gaunt and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a hospital down the road from where Nelson Mandela grew up, the rural community still lived without the standard of health care their compatriots took for granted. More than a decade into the country's democratic era, the hope and promise of freedom hadn't yet changed the chance babies had of being born alive, or children making it to their fifth birthday. Making life "better for all" takes more than rhetoric and policy. It requires real people, doing real jobs, often under difficult circumstances. At Zithulele, a "sticky core" of four doctor friends responded to the call to make a difference. Their story is one of hard work and humanity. There's heartache; at times, hilarity. But mostly, it's a story of hope; a story of ordinary people doing their bit to make South Africa better.

Book Chronicles of the Revolution 1397 1400

Download or read book Chronicles of the Revolution 1397 1400 written by Chris Given-Wilson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicles of the Revolution covers one of the most controversial and shocking episodes in medieval English history, the 'tyranny' and deposition of Richard II and the usurpation of the throne by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, who became King Henry IV. Contemporaries were sharply divided about the rights and wrongs of both Richard and Henry, and this division is reflected in the texts which form the major part of the book. All the principal contemporary chronicles are represented in this volume, from the violently partisan Thomas Walsingham, chronicler of St Alban's Abbey who saw Richard as a tyrant and murderer, to the indignant Dieulacres chronicler, who claimed that the 'innocent king' was tricked into surrender by his perjured barons. This range of material is also prefaced by a substantial and stimulating introduction offering new insights into Richard's later years and the events which precipitated his downfall. Additionally, the documents are accompanied by expert commentary and analysis which guides readers while leaving them free to make the ultimate conclusions about these dramatic years. This book will be invaluable for medieval historians as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students of later medieval English history.
