Book Gauguin by Himself Handbook

Download or read book Gauguin by Himself Handbook written by Paul Gauguin and published by Little Brown GBR. This book was released on 2004 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GAUGUIN BY HIMSELF is the first publication to give equal weight to the full range of Gauguin's activities both as an artist and a writer. His letters, including many to fellow painters such as Pissarro and Van Gogh, comment freely on contemporaries such as Cezanne, Monet and Degas, and meet head on the changing aesthetic concerns of avant-garde Paris in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. They also chart his increasingly hazardous travels around the globe in pursuit of his elusive idea of the 'primitive' from Paris and Copenhagen to Brittany, Provence, Panama, the West Indies and finally the South Pacific. Illustrated with over 200 of his most powerful and decorative works of art, GAUGUIN BY HIMSELF offers a fresh look at the diverse faces and talents of a man who chose to live outside the bounds of society in order to fulfil his vocation as a 'great artist'.

Book excerpt: "Paul Gauguin is among one of the most popular artists of the Modern period. His lush, colorful works created a stir within the art world at the turn of the century and helped form the basis for Modern painting. Gauguin's unconventional lifestyle brought him to experience rural Brittany, Panama, Martinique, Tahiti, and later, the Marquesas Islands. His travels inspired some of the most exquisite and paradisiacal visions in painting."--Amazon.

Book excerpt: Gauguin's paintings are redolent of the South Sea islands, full of exotic women, vibrant flora, and brilliant color. In addition, his scenes range from normal life in France's Brittany, to Provence where he painted and lived briefly with Vincent van Gogh, to French Polynesia. Eugne Henri Paul Gauguin was born in Paris on June 7, 1848. After Napolon III became the president of France, Gauguin's family left for Peru in December 1849. They remained there four years at which point they returned to Paris. An early exposure to a non-European lifestyle and culture undoubtedly opened Gauguin's mind to his later fascination with the Caribbean and with Tahiti and the peoples of those islands he portrayed so eloquently. Gauguin, a banker, started painting in his spare time. He never had any formal art training but set about painting as a hobby with commendable amateur skill. His first paintings were inspired by Corot and the Barbizon School and featured romantic-naturalist subject matter. He soon aligned himself with the Impressionists, but is now labeled by art historians as a Post-Impressionist. Gauguin called himself a Synthesist. His technique was often called Cloisonnisme.

  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Gauguin written by Paul Gauguin and published by Phaidon Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) began his career as a stockbroker. It was not until 1883 that he finally gave up his job to devote himself to art. The rest of his life, with its constant search for a 'lost paradise' untouched by nineteenth-century civilization constitutes one of the most widely known legends in the history of European art. He began as an Impressionist but developed a more two-dimensional and more richly colored style that is in places almost heraldic in effect and was to have a great influence on the non-naturalistic development of twentieth-century art. This new anthology presents many of the great masterpieces that Gauguin painted in Paris, Brittany, Tahiti and the Marquesas, chosen from museums and private collections all over the world. -- From publisher's description.

Book The Life and Art of Paul Gauguin

Download or read book The Life and Art of Paul Gauguin written by George Roddam and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Gauguin created paintings whose radically simplified lines and colors echoed the unschooled art of the rustic and native cultures he loved. After his famously disastrous stay with Vincent van Gogh in southern France, Gauguin escaped European civilization for the Polynesian islands. Immersing himself in the culture, he produced a series of radiant canvases and powerful sculptures – his last great works. From his childhood in Peru to his experiences in Tahiti, the story of Gauguin's life is recounted in authoritative text by an expert on the Post-Impressionists and compelling imagery by an award-winning illustrator.
