It is organised as a reader's guide to Gang Tian's landmark article Gauge theory and calibrated geometry, I, published in the Annals of Mathematics in 2000. Tian carried out to substantial lengths the programme outlined by Simon Donaldson and Richard Thomas in their seminal paper, by extending the fundamental notion of instanton in Yang-Mills theory to higher dimensional special geometries. Moreover, his bubbling theorem relates instanton compactness to the theory of calibrated submanifolds. This work expresses our admiration for all of these key authors.The text is aimed at graduate students and advanced undergraduates, as well as specialists in other areas of Mathematics and Physics, with an interest in modern Differential Geometry. We adopt a fast-paced but self-contained exposition of the background on connections and curvature on bundles, special geometric structures, analysis on manifolds and geometric measure theory, alongside the proof of Tian's bubbling theorem. We also highlight some links with other important works in contemporary Geometry and Topology.This version was commissioned as supporting material to an advanced course by the authors at the 32 Brazilian Colloquium of Mathematics, hosted by the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) from July 29th to August 2nd, 2019.We hope that the reader will share in our enthusiasm for this beautiful and fast-evolving subject.

Non-Abelian gauge symmetries are the symmetries behind theories for massless spin-1 particles, while the reparametrization symmetry is behind Einstein's gravity theory for massless spin-2 particles. In supersymmetric theories these particles can be connected also to massless fermionic particles. Does Nature stop at spin-2 or can there also be massless higher spin theories. In the past strong indications have been given that such theories do not exist. However, in recent times ways to evade those constraints have been found and higher spin gauge theories have been constructed. With the advent of the AdS/CFT duality correspondence even stronger indications have been given that higher spin gauge theories play an important role in fundamental physics.All these issues were discussed at a recent international workshop in Singapore where the leading scientists in the field participated. This volume presents an up-to-date, detailed overview of the theories including its historic background, as well as the latest accomplishments in understanding the foundational properties of higher spin physics.

Book excerpt: Our prime concern in this book is to discuss some most interesting prosppcts that have occurred recently in conformally invariant quantum field theory in a D-diuwnsional space. One of the most promising trends is constructing an pxact solution for a cprtain class of models. This task seems to be quite feasible in the light of recent resllits. The situation here is to some extent similar to what was going on in the past ypars with the two-dimensional quantum field theory. Our investigation of conformal Ward identities in a D-dimensional space, carried out as far hack as the late H. J7Gs, showed that in the D-dimensional quantum field theory, irrespective of the type of interartion, there exists a special set of states of the field with the following property: if we rpqllire that one of these states should vanish, this determines an exact solution of 3. certain field model. These states are analogous to null-vectors which determine the minimal models in the two-dimensional field theory. On the other hand, the recent resparches supplied us with a number of indications on the existencp of an intinite-parampter algebra analogous to the Virasoro algebra in spaces of higher dimensions D 2: :~. It has also been shown that this algebra admits an operator rentral expansion. It seems to us that the above-mentioned models are field theoretical realizations of the representations of these new symmetries for D 2: ;3.
