Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We provide string theory examples where a toy model of a SUSY GUT or the MSSM is embedded in a compactification along with a gauge sector which dynamically breaks supersymmetry. We argue that by changing microscopic details of the model (such as precise choices of flux), one can arrange for the dominant mediation mechanism transmitting SUSY breaking to the Standard Model to be either gravity mediation or gauge mediation. Systematic improvement of such examples may lead to top-down models incorporating a solution to the SUSY flavor problem.

Book excerpt: We consider the 3+1 visible sector to live on a Hanany-Witten D-brane construction in type IIA string theory. The messenger sector consists of stretched strings from the visible brane to a hidden D6-brane in the extra spatial dimensions. In the open string channel supersymmetry is broken by gauge mediation while in the closed string channel supersymmetry is broken by gravity mediation. Hence, we call this kind of mediation ''string mediation''. We propose an extension of the Dimopoulos-Georgi theorem to brane models: only detached probe branes can break supersymmetry without generating a tachyon. Fermion masses are generated at one loop if the branes break a sufficient amount of the ten dimensional Lorentz group while scalar potentials are generated if there is a force between the visible brane and the hidden brane. Scalars can be lifted at two loops through a combination of brane bending and brane forces. We find a large class of stable non-supersymmetric brane configurations of ten dimensional string theory.

Book Flux Compactifications Dual Gauge Theories and Supersymmetry Breaking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonholomorphic sector of four dimensional theories with N=1 supersymmetry that arises from string compactifications is analyzed, and new models of supersymmetry breaking (both in string and field theory) are presented. The dissertation combines three complementary viewpoints. First, space-time effects in 4d supergravity are studied from type IIB string theory compactified on warped Calabi-Yau manifolds with fluxes. The vacuum structure of supersymmetric flux compactifications is well understood and our aim is to extend this to include space-time dependence in the presence of nontrivial warping. Going beyond the static limit is required in order to compute kinetic terms and masses. We develop formalism for identifying the microscopic 10d fluctuations that give rise to fields in the low energy 4d theory, and we present a general formula for their kinetic terms. As an application, the effective theories for the universal K?hler modulus and the complex modulus of the warped deformed conifold are determined. The full effective action for warped compactifications is calculated to quadratic order, including both 4d zero modes and their light Kaluza-Klein excitations. Next, using gauge/gravity dualities, we consider the previous results from the gauge theory side. The focus is on the warped deformed conifold, which is dual to the Klebanov-Strassler gauge theory. In the infrared it reduces to four dimensional pure super Yang-Mills, corresponding to D5 branes in the resolved conifold. The closed string analysis reveals a new term in the K?hler potential for the complex modulus, which has important effects on the low energy theory. It is suggested that this term has a natural interpretation in the dual gauge theory, in terms of the composite nature of the gaugino condensate. Finally, new models of supersymmetry breaking are developed. From the string theory side, we analyze supersymmetry breaking by anti-self-dual flux in the deformed conifold. The theory develops a parametrically small scale of supersymmetry breaking, once warp corrections to the K?hler potential are included. In the field theory side, we construct a model of metastable supersymmetry breaking in SQCD where all the relevant parameters generated dynamically. It is argued that it is possible to balance non-perturbative effects against perturbative corrections. Furthermore, metastable vacua in SQCD with multitrace deformations are explored, with the aim of obtaining an acceptable phenomenology.

Book A Study of Beyond Standard Model Scenarios from String Compactifications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study several scenarios beyond the Standard Model from a string theory perspective, including supersymmetry breaking scenarios, axions and extended gauge sectors from D-brane compactifications. In the study of supersymmetry breaking scenarios, we find effective field theories with non-supersymmetric perturbations to supersymmetric flux compactifications of type IIB string theories exhibit soft supersymmetry breaking. From a Wilsonian point of view that spontaneous breaking is generically soft, this implies the supersymmetry-breaking may be spontaneous. We also identify a candidate of the goldstino that triggers the spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. In the study of axions and gauge sectors, we focus on different U(1) mixing effects. We find in a scenario small electric charges carried by dark matter particles arise exclusively from the kinetic mixing of at least 2 massless U(1) gauge bosons, while the mass mixing of the U(1)'s coupled to axions leads to a natural portal into the hidden sector which we refer to as Stueckelberg Portal. The millicharge dark matter scenario shows the converse of a previous statement by Holdom that kinetic mixing can lead to particles with milli electric charges is true, and thus experimentally a detection of millicharged dark matter would imply the existence of extra massless U(1)'s. The Stueckelberg Portal not only has many nice phenomenological features (e.g. sizable tree-level interactions, free of chiral exotics due to the tadpole cancellation by Green-Schwarz mechanism, and the possibility to lower the lightest Z' mass), but provides a simple and concrete way to realize Z'-mediation and hidden valley. In addition, it can be naturally and elegantly implemented in string theory. We provide an explicit D-brane configuration to realize this scenario, and this is the first global embedding of a genuine hidden sector (no chiral exotics) in D-brane constructions.

Book Supersymmetry Breaking in Gauge Theories and String Theory

Download or read book Supersymmetry Breaking in Gauge Theories and String Theory written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study aspects of supersymmetry breaking in gauge theories and string theory. On the gauge theory side, we explore metastable vacua in a SQCD-like model with an extra sector connected by a singlet. The model combines dynamical supersymmetry breaking with an O'Raifeartaigh mechanism in terms of confined variables. On the string theory side, we study the dynamics of non-supersymmetric magnetized D-brane configurations on Calabi-Yau spaces. We also study the stabilization of the supersymmetry breaking runaway quiver.

Book Supersymmetry and String Theory

Download or read book Supersymmetry and String Theory written by Michael Dine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is an introduction to the fields of experimental and theoretical particle physics and cosmology. The book focuses on three principal areas: supersymmetry, string theory, and astrophysics and cosmology. The chapters on supersymmetry introduce the basics of supersymmetry and its phenomenology, and cover dynamics, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and electric-magnetic duality. The book then introduces general relativity and the big bang theory, and the basic issues in inflationary cosmologies. The section on string theory discusses the spectra of known string theories, and the features of their interactions. Material added in the second edition includes the pivotal Higgs discovery and the results of the WMAP and Planck experiments. This book will be of great interest to graduates and researchers in the fields of particle theory, string theory, astrophysics, and cosmology. It has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Book Supersymmetry Breaking Gauge Mediation and the LHC

Download or read book Supersymmetry Breaking Gauge Mediation and the LHC written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gauge mediated SUSY breaking (GMSB) is a promising class of supersymmetric models that automatically satisfies the precision constraints. Prior work of Meade, Seiberg and Shih in 2008 established the full, model-independent parameter space of GMSB, which they called "General Gauge Mediation" (GGM). During the first half of 2010-2015, Shih and his collaborators thoroughly explored the parameter space of GGM and established many well-motivated benchmark models for use by the experimentalists at the LHC. Through their work, the current constraints on GGM from LEP, the Tevatron and the LHC were fully elucidated, together with the possible collider signatures of GMSB at the LHC. This ensured that the full discovery potential for GGM could be completely realized at the LHC.
