Book excerpt: The compelling astrophysical evidence for dark matter on one hand and the experimental evidence for neutrino masses on the other, demands modifications beyond the Standard Model. Therefore, building new models by extending the symmetries and particle content of the Standard Model is being pursued to remedy these problems. In this thesis, various models along with their predictions are presented. First, a gauge SU(2)N extension of the Standard Model, under which all of the Standard Model particles are singlet is introduced. The inverse seesaw mechanism is implemented for neutrino mass, with the new gauge boson as a dark matter candidate. The second paper is a gauge B-L extension of the Standard Model which breaks down to Z3, and it includes a long-lived dark matter candidate. The next model assumes that leptons do not couple directly to Higgs, and one loop mass generation is considered with important consequences, including Higgs decay, muon anomalous magnetic moment, etc. We then look at a U(1) gauge extension of the supersymmetric Standard Model, which has no [mu] term, and the Higgs boson's mass supersymmetric constraint is relaxed. The next model is a gauge B-L extension of the Standard Model with radiative seesaw neutrino mass and multipartite dark matter. We then consider another gauge U(1) extension under which quarks and leptons of each family may transform differently, while flavor-changing interactions are suitably suppressed. The next paper has an unbroken gauge SU(2) symmetry, which becomes confining at keV scale. We discuss the cosmological constraints and the implications for future e +e- colliders. Finally, an alternative left-right model is proposed with an automatic residual Z 2 × Z3 symmetry, such that dark matter has two components, i.e., one Dirac fermion and one complex scalar.

Was there any exciting news at the conference? Maybe, it depends on who answers the question. There was an almost unanimous agreement on the overall success of the conference as was evidenced by the fact that in the after-dinner remarks by one of us (BNK) the suggestion of organizing the conference on a biannual basis was presented but not accepted: the participants wanted the continuation of the tradition to convene annually. We shall, of course, comply. The expected observation of gravitational waves will constitute the most exciting vindication of Einstein's general relativity. This subject is attracting the attention of the experimentalists and theorists alike. We hope that by the first decade of the third millennium or earlier, gravitational waves will be detected, opening the way for a search for gravitons somewhere in the universe, presumably through the observations in the CMBR. The theoretical basis of the graviton search will take us to quantum gravity and eventually to the modification of general relativity to include the Planck scale behavior of gravity -at energies 19 of the order of 10 Ge V.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) of particles and interactions provides some of the most extensively tested predictions in science. However, it does not adequately describe quantum gravity, and does not contain a suitable candidate for Dark Matter. Furthermore, the UV sensitivity of the SM Higgs sector suggests that new states beyond the SM might exist at energies not far above the weak scale. This dissertation explores potential scenarios for physics beyond the SM, either in a dark sector or linked to the Higgs sector of the SM. The first part of this work includes two novel classes of composite Higgs models, with far reaching phenomenological consequences. In the first of these, an adjustable tree-level Higgs quartic coupling, allows for a significant reduc- tion in the tuning of the Higgs potential. The quartic in this model originates from the dimensional reduction of a 6D theory, and is the first example of a holo- graphic composite Higgs model with a tree-level quartic. In the second novel class of composite Higgs models, the top and gauge partners responsible for cut- ting off the Higgs quadratic divergences form a continuum. A concrete example is presented, based on a warped extra dimension with a linear dilaton, where this finite gap appears naturally. Spectral densities are derived for this model, as well as the full Higgs potential for a phenomenologically viable benchmark point, with percent level tuning. The continuum top and gauge partners in this model evade all resonance searches at the LHC and yield qualitatively differentcollider signals. The second part of this work features two different classes of models for an extended dark sector that undergoes either confinement or bound states forma- tion. It is shown how each of these mechanisms could lead to vast modifications of early universe dynamics, as well as unique signals today. In the first of these, the relic abundance of heavy stable particles charged under a confining gauge group is depleted by a second stage of annihilations near the deconfinement temperature. This mechanism can be used to construct ultra-heavy dark-matter models with masses above the naive unitarity bound. The second contribution is Self-Destructing Dark Matter (SDDM), a new class of dark matter models which are detectable in large neutrino detectors. In this class of models, a com- ponent of dark matter can transition from a long-lived state to a short-lived one by scattering off of a nucleus or an electron in the Earth. The short-lived state then decays to SM particles, generating a dark matter signal with a visible en- ergy of order the dark matter mass rather than just its recoil.

Book excerpt: Though it appears to describe the world well to at least the electroweak scale, the Standard Model is becoming increasingly inadequate: it can fit fermionic masses but offers no explanation for the observed hierarchy; it provides no mechanism for generating neutrinos mass; and lastly, but perhaps most significantly, it is absent any dark matter candidate. Myriad extentions exist that are able to accommodate these problems individually including the many models that resort to ad hoc symmetries to protect dark matter. Here, extensions are motivated by generalizations of symmetries contained in the Standard Model (such as B-L) or symmetries introduced to enhance Standard Model structure. In the first part we study generalizations of U(1) gauge extensions such a B-L and I3R. For generalized B-L, we allow families to transform differently from one another and study the resulting flavor-changing neutral current constraints. In the next project, to incorporate dark matter to the puzzle, we then implement the scotogenic mechanism to generate neutrino mass via the Type II seesaw with interesting collider signatures coming from the double charged scalar. The next extension is a U(1) family symmetry that is also a dark symmetry, in both cases coupling exclusively to right-handed objects. We then push to explore Alternative Left-Right models both individually and as low-energy subgroups of the unified trinification and quartification models. We uncover naturally emerging dark symmetries for certain breaking patterns and investigate phenomenological signatures that arise from dark matter and glueball-like states of leptonic color. Obtaining gauge coupling unification at one-loop imposes further constraints on the possible symmetry breaking patterns as well as permissible low-energy particle content.
