Book excerpt: A French national, born in 1924 of immigrant Italian parents, Armand Gatti worked as a special correspondent in post-war Europe, Siberia, Korea, China and Latin America. He abandoned journalism in the 1950s to write for the theater. A visionary more than an ideologue, a utopian anarchist more than a partisan, Gatti engages with the themes and experiences that shape the 20th century as we know it: destruction on a global scale, injustice and oppression, displacement and survival, identity and language. His writing challenges theatrical and cultural conventions, inviting us to reassess both the world we live in and the forms we use to represent it.

Book Intimate Warfare

Download or read book Intimate Warfare written by Dennis Taylor and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate Warfare: The True Story of the Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward Boxing Trilogy traces the lives and careers of two legendary fighters—Micky Ward, a humble, hardscrabble, blue-collar Irishman from Lowell, Massachusetts, and Arturo Gatti, a handsome, flashy, charismatic Italian-born star who was raised in Montreal. Dennis Taylor and John J. Raspanti paint a vivid portrait of these two fighters who ushered each other into boxing lore and formed an unlikely friendship despite their brutal battles in the ring. Gatti’s life would end tragically and mysteriously just a few years later, but his name and Ward’s remain tied together in boxing history. In Intimate Warfare, each of the three spectacular fights between Gatti and Ward, two of which were named The Ring magazine’s “Fight of the Year,” are described in detail. Multiple photographs from the trilogy highlight the intensity and power of these epic collisions. With a foreword by former world champion and International Boxing Hall of Famer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, this book will be of interest to all fans of boxing.

Book Essays on Giordano Bruno

Download or read book Essays on Giordano Bruno written by Hilary Gatti and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers wide-ranging essays on the Italian Renaissance philosopher and cosmologist Giordano Bruno by one of the world's leading authorities on his work and life. Many of these essays were originally written in Italian and appear here in English for the first time. Bruno (1548-1600) is principally famous as a proponent of heliocentrism, the infinity of the universe, and the plurality of worlds. But his work spanned the sciences and humanities, sometimes touching the borders of the occult, and Hilary Gatti's essays richly reflect this diversity. The book is divided into sections that address three broad subjects: the relationship between Bruno and the new science, the history of his reception in English culture, and the principal characteristics of his natural philosophy. A final essay examines why this advocate of a "tranquil universal philosophy" ended up being burned at the stake as a heretic by the Roman Inquisition. While the essays take many different approaches, they are united by a number of assumptions: that, although well versed in magic, Bruno cannot be defined primarily as a Renaissance Magus; that his aim was to articulate a new philosophy of nature; and that his thought, while based on ancient and medieval sources, represented a radical rupture with the philosophical schools of the past, helping forge a path toward a new modernity.

Two years later, he was gone—found dead in a hotel in Brazil under mysterious circumstances. He was only thirty-seven years old. Did he commit suicide? Or was he killed by his new wife? Book Giordano Bruno and Renaissance Science

Download or read book Giordano Bruno and Renaissance Science written by Hilary Gatti and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno was a notable supporter of the new science that arose during his lifetime; his role in its development has been debated ever since the early seventeenth century. Hilary Gatti here reevaluates Bruno's contribution to the scientific revolution, in the process challenging the view that now dominates Bruno criticism among English-language scholars. This argument, associated with the work of Frances Yates, holds that early modern science was impregnated with and shaped by Hermetic and occult traditions, and has led scholars to view Bruno primarily as a magus. Gatti reinstates Bruno as a scientific thinker and occasional investigator of considerable significance and power whose work participates in the excitement aroused by the new science and its methods at the end of the sixteenth century. Her original research emphasizes the importance of Bruno's links to the magnetic philosophers, from Ficino to Gilbert; Bruno's reading and extension of Copernicus's work on the motions of the earth; the importance of Bruno's mathematics; and his work on the art of memory seen as a picture logic, which she examines in the light of the crises of visualization in present-day science. She concludes by emphasizing Bruno's ethics of scientific discovery.

  • Author : Seth Rosenfeld
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2012-08-21
  • ISBN : 1429969326
  • Pages : 754 pages

Download or read book Subversives written by Seth Rosenfeld and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subversives traces the FBI's secret involvement with three iconic figures at Berkeley during the 1960s: the ambitious neophyte politician Ronald Reagan, the fierce but fragile radical Mario Savio, and the liberal university president Clark Kerr. Through these converging narratives, the award-winning investigative reporter Seth Rosenfeld tells a dramatic and disturbing story of FBI surveillance, illegal break-ins, infiltration, planted news stories, poison-pen letters, and secret detention lists. He reveals how the FBI's covert operations—led by Reagan's friend J. Edgar Hoover—helped ignite an era of protest, undermine the Democrats, and benefit Reagan personally and politically. At the same time, he vividly evokes the life of Berkeley in the early sixties—and shows how the university community, a site of the forward-looking idealism of the period, became a battleground in an epic struggle between the government and free citizens. The FBI spent more than $1 million trying to block the release of the secret files on which Subversives is based, but Rosenfeld compelled the bureau to release more than 250,000 pages, providing an extraordinary view of what the government was up to during a turning point in our nation's history. Part history, part biography, and part police procedural, Subversives reads like a true-crime mystery as it provides a fresh look at the legacy of the sixties, sheds new light on one of America's most popular presidents, and tells a cautionary tale about the dangers of secrecy and unchecked power.
