  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2004-06-01
  • ISBN : 9780803282933
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book A Gathering of Rivers written by Lucy Eldersveld Murphy and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Gathering of Rivers, Lucy Eldersveld Murphy traces the histories of Indian, multiracial, and mining communities in the western Great Lakes region during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. For a century the Winnebagos (Ho-Chunks),øMesquakies (Fox), and Sauks successfully confronted waves of French and British immigration by diversifying their economies and commercializing lead mining. Focusing on personal stories and detailed community histories, Murphy charts the changed economic forces at work in the region, connecting them to shifts in gender roles and intercultural relationships. She argues that French, British, and Native peoples forged cooperative social and economic bonds expressed partly by mixed-race marriages and the emergence of multiethnic communities at Green Bay and Prairie du Chien. Significantly, Native peoples in the western Great Lakes region were able to adapt successfully to the new frontier market economy until their lead mining operations became the envy of outsiders in the 1820s.

Book Discovery in the Archives of Spain and Portugal

Download or read book Discovery in the Archives of Spain and Portugal written by Lawrence J. McCrank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1993 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quincentenary celebration of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to America sparked popular controversy and political debate over the true nature of the voyage as discovery or conquest. Discovery in the Archives of Spain and Portugal refocuses the debate, serving as a reminder that historical reinterpretation calls for reexamination of evidence rather than merely the expression of personal opinion. A lively and interesting overview of Iberian and related archives, the book examines archives and primary documentary sources in the early-modern era from Spain and Portugal. Discovery in the Archives of Spain and Portugal surveys sources, source criticism, and controversies surrounding Christopher Columbus and revisionism in interpreting the "discovery of America" as an encounter between two worlds. Authors discuss the origin of archives and historical documentation and pose questions and themes for further research provide survey information and practical guidance for potential research in Spanish and Portuguese archives give an overview of gathering, editing, analyzing, and interpreting primary sources share anecdotal experiences of research in the archives of Spain and Portugal relate narratives and documentary sources for Columbus's affair with those in the larger arena of European expansionism. Discovery in the Archives of Spain and Portugal is a fascinating volume that conveys the flavor of searching archives, the enthusiasm of past and current researchers, and a sense of genuine discovery in the archives. Librarians, historians, and archivists will find the book to be an intriguing study of primary sources and original material surrounding the travels of Christopher Columbus to America within the broader context of his times.

Book A Gathering of Evidence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers together twelve recent and classic essays on Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust, which he termed "a mystery-murder" whose theme concerns a "relationship between Negro and white, specifically or rather the premise being that the white people in the south, before the North or the govt. or anyone else, owe and must pay a responsibility to the Negro." These essays provide a rich set of resources to teachers who wish to assign this text, as well as to provide food for thought and discussion to individual readers and scholars of Faulkner.

Book Cotton Mather s Spanish Lessons

Download or read book Cotton Mather s Spanish Lessons written by Kirsten Silva Gruesz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of linguistic and colonial encounter in the early Americas, anchored by the unlikely story of how Boston’s most famous Puritan came to write the first Spanish-language publication in the English New World. The Boston minister Cotton Mather was the first English colonial to refer to himself as an American. He was also the first to author a Spanish-language publication: La Fe del Christiano (The Faith of the Christian), a Protestant tract intended to evangelize readers across the Spanish Americas. Kirsten Silva Gruesz explores the conditions that produced La Fe del Christiano, from the intimate story of the “Spanish Indian” servants in Mather’s household, to the fragile business of printing and bookselling, to the fraught overlaps of race, ethnicity, and language that remain foundational to ideas of Latina/o/x belonging in the United States today. Mather’s Spanish project exemplifies New England’s entanglement within a partially Spanish Catholic, largely Indigenous New World. British Americans viewed Spanish not only as a set of linguistic practices, but also as the hallmark of a rival empire and a nascent racial-ethnic category. Guided by Mather’s tract, Gruesz explores English settlers’ turbulent contacts with the people they called “Spanish Indians,” as well as with Black and local native peoples. Tracing colonial encounters from Boston to Mexico, Florida, and the Caribbean, she argues that language learning was intimately tied with the formation of new peoples. Even as Spanish has become the de facto second language of the United States, the story of La Fe del Christiano remains timely and illuminating, locating the roots of latinidad in the colonial system of the early Americas. Cotton Mather’s Spanish Lessons reinvents our understanding of a key colonial intellectual, revealing notions about language and the construction of race that endure to this day.

Book Gathering Together

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sami Lakomäki
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2014-08-12
  • ISBN : 0300180616
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Gathering Together written by Sami Lakomäki and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving Indian and Euro-American histories together in this groundbreaking book, Sami Lakomäki places the Shawnee people, and Native peoples in general, firmly at the center of American history. The book covers nearly three centuries, from the years leading up to the Shawnees’ first European contacts to the post–Civil War era, and demonstrates vividly how the interactions between Natives and newcomers transformed the political realities and ideas of both groups. Examining Shawnee society and politics in new depth, and introducing not only charismatic warriors like Blue Jacket and Tecumseh but also other leaders and thinkers, Lakomäki explores the Shawnee people’s debates and strategies for coping with colonial invasion. The author refutes the deep-seated notion that only European colonists created new nations in America, showing that the Shawnees, too, were engaged in nation building. With a sharpened focus on the creativity and power of Native political thought, Lakomäki provides an array of insights into Indian as well as American history.

Book Prelude to War

    Book Details:
  • Author : P.A.M. Esch
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401508208
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Prelude to War written by P.A.M. Esch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this book is confined to the international aspects of the Spanish civil war. It is primarily a study in international relations at a crucial period in the inter-war years. The separate military campaigns of the civil war itself, the political situation in Spain, and the historical forces that gave rise to the conflict have only been sketched in the opening chapters as a background to the diplomatic relations which took place among the European nations as a result of the civil war. The history and causes of the conflict itself are dealt with fully and authoritatively in the publications of scholars such as Gerald Brenan, Salvador de Madariaga, E. Allison Peers and Franz Borkenau in England, Alfred Mousset and Robert Brasillach in France and E. J. Hughes in the United States. It is the most serious handicap in dealing with contemporary history that it is impossible to write a definitive work because all the necessary documentation has not appeared. Nevertheless, many new facts have emerged in this study on the basis of mate rial published in the last ten years. Stories that were thought to be true at the time can now be supported or refuted by document ary evidence. There is proof in Serrano Su er's memoirs, for example, relative to the plotting of the civil war by the Spanish generals which corroborates the account of General Mola's secretary, Jose Ibarren.
