Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework. In West Kalimantan the predominant feature was particularly that of the Dayaks. This surge, however, was not unprecedented. After centuries of occupying a subordinate place in the political and social hierarchy under the nominal rule of the Malay sultanates, Dayaks became involved in an enthusiastic political emancipation movement from 1945. The Dayaks secured the governorship as well as the majority of the regional executive head positions before they were shunned by the New Order regime. This book examines the development of Dayak politics in West Kalimantan from the colonial times until the first decade of the 21th century. It asks how and why Dayak politics has experienced drastic changes since 1945. It will look at the effect of regime change, the role of the individual leaders and organizations, the experience of marginalization, and conflicts on the course of Dayaks politics. It will also examine ethnic relations and recent political development up to 2010 in the province.

It describes and analyzes social, political and cultural aspects of their identities by taking into account the conceptual history of Baba designations from 1819-1994. It argues that defining the Babas is misleading, it is more meaningful to adopt a socio-historical approach that differentiates spaciotemporally-distinct Baba identities. Such an approach is usually avoided not only in research on the Babas, but in many other sociological, anthropological or historical studies. It concludes that there is no such thing as a Baba identity, it has always been in flux and needs to be reconstructed taking seriously the conceptual history. The two crucial turning-points in the history of the Babas, namely the Japanese occupation (1942-1945) and self-rule (1959) led to public emphasis on their culture. Prior emphasis on their former status as a political and economic elite have been hitherto neglected. Taking into account all aspects (legal, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, religious) of Baba identities leads us to a fascinating trajectory of a potential group.
