Book Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Disease

Download or read book Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Disease written by Bertram Wiedenmann and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the last century, the development of the Neuroendocrine Concept sparked intensive and worldwide research efforts leading to fascinating insights into the complex and diverse system of neuroendocrine cells and its importance in human physiology and disease. Recent developments in new and expanding research areas, including developmental biology, regulation of angiogenesis, cellular signaling and transcription, and impressive results obtained by application of genomics and proteomics warranted a reevaluation of the neuroendocrine concept. impact of the current understanding of neuroendocrine biology and pathobiology in these research areas. In particular, new discoveries are presented in neuroendocrine developmental biology with special emphasis on transcription factors controlling neuroendocrine differentiation of endodermal stem cells. controlling formation and proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels and molecular determinants of hematogenous and lymphatic tumor dissemination. Given their central importance for the establishment and maintenance of the neuroendocrine phenotype, signal transduction cascades and their cellular targets related to the regulation of adhesion processes, receptor-mediated endocytosis, and cell cycle events as well as secretory activation and membrane trafficking are discussed in the context of neuroendocrine physiology and neuroendocrine tumor disease. Since many of the recent discoveries made in basic research can be directly linked to clinical applications, this volume summarizes and discusses innovative treatment and/or diagnostic approaches for neuroendocrine tumor disease.

Book Sandostatin in the Treatment of Gastroenteropancreatic Endocrine Tumors

Download or read book Sandostatin in the Treatment of Gastroenteropancreatic Endocrine Tumors written by T.M. O'Dorisio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secretion of bioactive products by tumors of the gastroenteropancreatic system results in the development of watery diarrhea that can lead to death in a very short period if not brought under control. Even if the consequences are less dramatic, the patients' ability to lead a normal daily life is seriously impaired, and they may become severely depressed. SandostatinR alleviates the condition by inhibiting peptide release, and its long duration of action makes it an effective and rational adjunct to therapy at all stages. Last year a consensus Round Table Meeting was held in Scottsdale, Arizona, to discuss the optimal use of SandostatinR in this indication. These guidelines offer the results of clinical research and the dosage recommendations arising from them, together with a critical summary of the points of view presented.

Book Neuroendocrine tumours of the digestive tract in Austria

Download or read book Neuroendocrine tumours of the digestive tract in Austria written by Martin B. Niederle and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2011 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroendocrine tumours of the digestive tract are rare neoplasms deriving from the neuroendocrine cells spread along the digestive tract from the oesophagus to the rectum. This books aims to summarize the current knowledge about the origin and hormones of neuroendocrine cells in the digestive tract and the current staging- and grading systems for neuroendocrine tumours. Data on the incidence of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) have so far only been obtained retrospectively and are based on inhomogeneous material. So the research part of this book presents a prospective study collecting all newly diagnosed GEP-NETs in Austria during one year. Using the WHO 2000- classification, the TNM staging and Ki67-grading, and the standard diagnostic procedure proposed by the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS), GEP-NETs from 285 patients were recorded. Additionally the practice of diagnosis and treatment in Austria is addressed and describes "unmasked" clinical symptoms, methods of diagnosis, treatment, and short-term follow-up of neuroendocrine tumors of the digestive tract diagnosed during one year in Austria.
