Book Gastroenterology For General Surgeons

Download or read book Gastroenterology For General Surgeons written by Matthias W. Wichmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a void in the market for specialists who are working in areas without the support of gastroenterologists. Due to a lack of local expertise, treatment decisions in the field of gastroenterology frequently have to be made by non-gastroenterologists. The book addresses this problem by providing clear instructions on the diagnosis, medical management and on-going treatment of the most common disease patterns encountered in gastroenterology. Written by leading experts in their respective fields, it offers up-to-date evidence and insights into these conditions to enable adequate decision-making and safe management of these conditions.

Book Manual of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

Download or read book Manual of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery written by William H. ReMine and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986-12-16 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manual of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery was compiled as an aid to surgeons, residents, and students who want to acquire a broader knowl edge of the surgical techniques used in the upper gastrointestinal area. Of necessity, a considerable amount of the work of a general surgeon will be confined to this region. The techniques described herein are those preferred by the authors and most, but not all, of their colleagues at the Mayo Clinic. No attempt has been made to include all of the available possibilities and technical varia tions. Likewise, no attempt has been made to include many of the stapling techniques. Although they are good and quite useful, their inclusion would require a complete and separate volume. The omission of an accepted procedure is not meant as a criticism; our aim was to emphasize only the techniques that are most commonly used in day-to-day practice. Gains in knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the esopha gus, stomach, and duodenum have been highly instrumental in the devel opment of surgical procedures in these areas, particularly the techniques for benign diseases (for example, ulcer, gastritis, and esophagitis).

Book Contentious Issues in Surgical Gastroenterology ECAB

Download or read book Contentious Issues in Surgical Gastroenterology ECAB written by and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All surgeons are convinced that they provide the best possible care to their patients and fortunately most patients are happy with their surgeons. Where safety and quality were once considered to be self-evident, these issues need to be made more explicit in modern surgery. Doctors and the general public alike are nowadays more aware of the variations in quality that exist among surgeons and institutions and of the unwarranted harmful effects surgery can have. Super- or sub-specialization seems one way to improve both its quality and safety. Surgical Gastroenterology or Gastrointestinal Surgery is one of these new superspecialties. The path towards this specialization is not easy and turf battles between General Surgery and Surgical Gastroenterology are still being fought. Professor Kaushik recounts the history and development of this superspecialty in India. He recounts that although the history of Surgical Gastroenterology in this country is short, its future is bright but, as has happened in other countries, its further division into organ-based superspecialties can be expected. ‘Practice makes one perfect’ is the motto that is probably true for the high-risk surgery which is still being performed in small institutions or by surgeons with only little expertise. The inverse correlation between volume and outcome expressed as mortality and morbidity has been shown all over the world. Wouters et al systematically analyze the literature covering this topic. They also show that concentration and regionalization do not automatically lead to an improved quality of surgery, since other issues for quality assurance are of equal importance, such as adherence to evidence-based guidelines, feedback, and monitoring. Despite all the inputs in training and instruction by experts, a uniformly high quality of surgery is hard to achieve in day-to-day gastrointestinal surgery. Sudhir Joseph and his colleagues show that a dedicated checklist can save lives and reduce postoperative morbidity in many countries with different systems and levels of healthcare. A similar beneficial effect was found in The Netherlands using a more comprehensive checklist that covers the whole period of the hospital stay. The new type of surgeon is aware of the principles of evidence-based medicine and he/she will challenge the dogmas of the ‘old’ surgery. Over the years our surgical masters have told us about the importance of good pre-operative and postoperative care for our patients. The bowel should be put at rest before operation and oral feeding restored only slowly after surgery starting with nothing by mouth to sips of clear water. Bed rest was essential for recovery. He introduced the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery after Surgery) strategy also named Fast Track Surgery. Mitchell et al provide ample evidence that all surgeons should adopt the ERAS strategy. Implementation of this will lead to better and more cost-effective operations.

Book Advanced Colonoscopy and Endoluminal Surgery

Download or read book Advanced Colonoscopy and Endoluminal Surgery written by Sang W. Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each chapter of this new book on advanced lower GI endoscopy and endoluminal surgery focuses on the thought process and step-wise technical approach to the condition and procedure listed. By using this unique method, practitioners ranging from surgeons-in-training, gastroenterologists-in-training and those early in their career to senior colorectal specialists and gastroenterologist who want to incorporate or improve their advanced endoscopic skills will be able utilize techniques and learn from this gathering of experts. The guiding principle of this work is to create a resource for surgeons and gastroenterologists that extends beyond the currently available texts, and that surgeons and gastroenterologists can turn to when wanting to “brush up” on techniques, find a useful “tip or trick” for a complex patient, or simply learn a reproducible methods for advanced endoscopic procedures. This unique book highlights current knowledge, demonstrates standards of medical care, and provides clear step-by-step reproducible techniques even for the most advanced procedures. Beyond the simple application of technical knowledge the book addresses the deeper questions about the optimal “next step” in dealing with more complex patients (i.e., difficult polyps, gastrointestinal bleeding, IBD). International experts also address future challenges and innovations in lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. Finally, it focuses on specific “tips and tricks” that experts in the field have learned. The format follows that of both a “how to” manual as well as an algorithm-based guide to allow the reader to understand the thought process behind the proposed treatment strategy. Throughout the text, each author provides an ongoing narrative of his/her individual techniques along with color illustrations and diagrams to “personally” take the reader through the crucial steps of the procedure, and key points of patient care inherent to that topic. Additionally, where appropriate, links to online videos will give the reader an up-front look into technical aspects of EMR, ESD, endoscopic stent placements, CELS, as well as NOTES. The editors and contributors to this book are those with nationally and internationally recognized expertise in lower gastrointestinal endoscopic and endoluminal interventions, have taught many international courses, and have numerous peer-reviewed publications. This book will be useful to colorectal surgeons, general surgeons, and gastroenterologists who want to learn or improve their skills in lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and advanced endoscopic interventions. Furthermore, this book will be of particular interest to the surgeons-in-training, and gastroenterologist-in-training that are often called upon to manage a variety of colorectal conditions through an endoscopic approach. This would ultimately serve as an invaluable reference for any physician or surgeon with a vested interest in caring for patients with simple or complex colorectal disease.
