Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gaston De Blondeville, or the Court of Henry III, Vol. 3 of 4: Keeping Festival in Ardenne, a Romance; St. Alban's Abbey, a Metrical Tale; With Some Poetical Pieces Here was miniatured a stately chamber, in part richly illuminated. Under a canopy, was a long sleeping-couch, but no person appeared there. In another part of this spacious room, Where the light prevailed less, sat one, who leaned thoughtfully on a table, his hand covering his eyes; another figure stood near, but so obscurely drawn, that for what designed could not he certainly known. Images, holding lamps, were pictured in the chamber. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cambridge History of the Gothic Volume 1 Gothic in the Long Eighteenth Century

Download or read book The Cambridge History of the Gothic Volume 1 Gothic in the Long Eighteenth Century written by Angela Wright and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of The Cambridge History of the Gothic provides a rigorous account of the Gothic in Western civilisation, from the Goths' sacking of Rome in 410 AD through to its manifestations in British and European culture of the long eighteenth century. Written by international cast of leading scholars, the chapters explore the interdisciplinary nature of the Gothic in the fields of history, literature, architecture and fine art. As much a cultural history of Gothic as an account of the ways in which the Gothic has participated within a number of formative historical events across time, the volume offers fresh perspectives on familiar themes while also drawing new critical attention to a range of hitherto overlooked concerns. From writers such as Horace Walpole and Ann Radcliffe to eighteenth-century politics and theatre, the volume provides a thorough and engaging overview of early Gothic culture in Britain and beyond.

Book Painting the Novel

Download or read book Painting the Novel written by Jakub Lipski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Painting the Novel: Pictorial Discourse in Eighteenth-Century English Fiction focuses on the interrelationship between eighteenth-century theories of the novel and the art of painting – a subject which has not yet been undertaken in a book-length study. This volume argues that throughout the century novelists from Daniel Defoe to Ann Radcliffe referred to the visual arts, recalling specific names or artworks, but also artistic styles and conventions, in an attempt to define the generic constitution of their fictions. In this, the novelists took part in the discussion of the sister arts, not only by pointing to the affinities between them but also, more importantly, by recognising their potential to inform one another; in other words, they expressed a conviction that the theory of a new genre can be successfully rendered through meta-pictorial analogies. By tracing the uses of painting in eighteenth-century novelistic discourse, this book sheds new light on the history of the so-called "rise of the novel".

Book Horror Literature from Gothic to Post Modern

Download or read book Horror Literature from Gothic to Post Modern written by Michele Brittany and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From shambling zombies to Gothic ghosts, horror has entertained thrill-seeking readers for centuries. A versatile literary genre, it offers commentary on societal issues, fresh insight into the everyday and moral tales disguised in haunting tropes and grotesque acts, with many stories worthy of critical appraisal. This collection of new essays takes in a range of topics, focusing on historic works such as Ann Radcliffe's Gaston de Blondeville (1826) and modern novels including Max Brooks' World War Z. Other contributions examine weird fiction, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Indigenous Australian monster mythology and horror in picture books for young children.
