Download or read book Fishermen and Merchants in 19th Century Gasp written by Roch Samson and published by National Historic Parks and Sites Branch, Parks Canada. This book was released on 1984 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of the work done in connection with therestoration of the old fishing establishment at Grand-Grave, which is now in Forillon National Park. Its contents should helpin the historical interpretation of the social and economic lifeof merchants and fishermen who lived in Forillon. The archivesof William Hyman and Sons (1845-1967) formed most of thedocumentary basis for the work. The guiding principle for thework was economic anthropology, and its purpose to show how Gaspesociety was shaped by the manner in which the production of driedcod was organized. Gaspe was settled and populated through asystematic expoloitation of cod, so that a study of this processconstitutes a most valuable means of access to its history.

Book Contexts of Acadian History 1686 1784

Download or read book Contexts of Acadian History 1686 1784 written by Naomi E.S. Griffiths and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1992-03-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1600 there were no such people as the Acadians; by 1700 the Acadians, who numbered almost 2,000, lived in an area now covered by northern Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the southern Gaspé region of Quebec. While most of their ancestors had come to live there from France, a number had arrived from Scotland and England. Their relations with the original inhabitants of the region, the Micmac and Malecite peoples, were generally peaceful. In 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht recognized the Acadian community and gave their territory -- on the frontier between New England and New France -- to Great Britain. During the next forty years the Acadians continued to prosper and to develop their political life and distinctive culture. The deportation of 1755, however, exiled the majority of Acadians to other British colonies in North America. Some went on from their original destination to England, France, or Santo Domingo; many of those who arrived in France continued on to Louisiana; some Acadians eventually returned to Nova Scotia, but not to the lands they once held. The deportation, however, did not destroy the Acadian community. In spite of a horrific death toll, nine years of proscription, and the forfeiture of property and political rights, the Acadians continued to be part of Nova Scotia. The communal existence they were able to sustain, Griffiths shows, formed the basis for the recovery of Acadian society when, in 1764, they were again permitted to own land in the colony. Instead of destroying the Acadian community, the deportation proved to be a source of power for the formation of Acadian identity in the nineteenth century. By placing Acadian history in the context of North American and European realities, Griffiths removes it from the realms of folklore and partisan political interpretation. She brings into play the current historiographical concerns about the development of the trans-Atlantic world of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, considerably sharpening our focus on this period of North American history.

Book The Making of the October Crisis

Download or read book The Making of the October Crisis written by D'Arcy Jenish and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive, mind-changing history of the October Crisis and the events leading up to it. The first bombs exploded in Montreal in the spring of 1963, and over the next seven years there were hundreds more bombings, many bank robberies, six murders and, in October 1970, the kidnappings of a British diplomat and a Quebec cabinet minister. The perpetrators were members of the Front de libération du Québec, dedicated to establishing a sovereign and socialist Quebec. Half a century on, we should have reached some clear understanding of what led to the October Crisis. Instead, too much attention has been paid to the Crisis and not enough to the years preceding it. Most of those who have written about the FLQ have been ardent nationalists, committed sovereigntists or former terrorists. They tell us that the authorities should have negotiated with the kidnappers and contend that Jean Drapeau's administration and the governments of Robert Bourassa and Pierre Trudeau created the October Crisis by invoking the War Measures Act. Using new research and interviews, D'Arcy Jenish tells for the first time the complete story—starting from the spring of 1963. This gripping narrative by a veteran journalist and master storyteller will change forever the way we view this dark chapter in Canadian history.
