Book Mechanical Seals

Download or read book Mechanical Seals written by E. Mayer and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical Seals, Third Edition is a source of practical information on the design and use of mechanical seals. Topics range from design fundamentals and test rigs to leakage, wear, friction and power, reliability, and special designs. This text is comprised of nine chapters; the first of which gives a general overview of seals, including various types of seals and their applications. Attention then turns to the fundamentals of seal design, with emphasis on six requirements that must be considered: sealing effectiveness, length of life, reliability, power consumption, space requirements, and cost effectiveness. The next chapter is devoted to test rigs used to establish the effect of the various seal parameters on the behavior of face seals. Special test rigs used to establish leakage, wear, friction losses, and temperature distributions for various material combinations, rubbing speeds, pressures, fluid media, and temperatures are highlighted. The following chapters explain primary leakage through the seal gap between the faces of the seals; factors that contribute to seal wear; friction and power of a mechanical seal; relationship of leakage to wear and friction of a balanced face seal; and importance of seal reliability and operating safety. The final chapter explores particularly interesting sealing problems together with the use of special accessories such as heat exchangers; magnetic and cyclone separators; and techniques such as cooling and auxiliary circulation. This book will be useful to mechanical engineers as well as seal designers and seal users.

Book Experimental Determination of Sealing Pressure of a Press in place Gasket

Download or read book Experimental Determination of Sealing Pressure of a Press in place Gasket written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Press-in-Place (PIP) gasket is a static face seal with self-retaining feature, which is used for the mating surfaces of engine components to maintain the reliability of the closed system under various operating conditions. Its design allows it to provide enough contact pressure to seal the internal fluid as well as prevent mechanical failures. Insufficient sealing pressure will lead to fluid leakage, consequently resulting in engine failures. A test fixture was designed to simulate the clamp load and internal pressure condition on a gasketed bolted joint. Tekscan equipment was used to capture the overall and local pressure distribution of the PIP gasket under various loading conditions. Then, the test results were compared with simulated results from computer models. Through the comparisons, it was found that sealing pressure of test data and CAE data are close in all internal pressure cases when the bolt load is 500N. Compared to 20 psi & 40 psi, better correlation to CAE results was observed at 0 psi pressure condition. Besides, CAE results closely match with test results for NMC condition for all load cases. Moveover, the cross-sectional pressure distribution obtained by experimental tests and CAE models correlated very well at different locations.

Book Development of a New Seal for Use on Large Openings of Pressurized Spacecraft

Download or read book Development of a New Seal for Use on Large Openings of Pressurized Spacecraft written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project was to design, build, and test an example of the seal invented by the author for use on Space Station Freedom and patented in 1991. The seal features a metallic spring core and replaceable elastomeric sealing elements. The metallic spring is designed to retain the sealing force of the elastomeric element against both sides of face seal gland for any specified amount of waviness or separation of the glands. A seal able to tolerate at least 1.3 mm (0.05 in) of flange distortion or separation and a test fixture of this seal which allowed direct comparison testing of O-rings were built. These designs were tested to compare leakage at different amounts of flange deflection. Results of the testing show the development seal exceeded its requirement to seal 1.3 mm of flange separation by 1 mm. This compared with the O-ring leakage, increasing dramatically at 0.5 mm of separation. The development seal also leaked at a lower rate than the O-ring seals in all tests. Weddendorf, B. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-20th Century, automatic transmissions have benefited drivers by automatically changing gear ratios, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. The automatic transmission's primary job is to allow the engine to operate in its speed range while providing a wide range of output (vehicle) speeds automatically. The transmission uses gears to make more effective use of the engine's torque and to keep the engine operating at an appropriate speed. For nearly half a century, Design Practices: Passenger Car Automatic Transmissions has been the “go-to” handbook of design considerations for automatic transmission industry engineers of all levels of experience. This latest 4th edition represents a major overhaul from the prior edition and is arguably the most significant update in its long history. In summary, the authors have put together the most definitive handbook for automatic transmission design practices available today. Virtually all existing chapters have been updated and improved with the latest state-of-the-art information and many have been significantly expanded with more detail and design consideration updates; most notably for torque converters and start devices, gears/splines/chains, bearings, wet friction, one-way clutch, pumps, seals and gaskets, and controls. All new chapters have also been added, including state-of-the-art information on: • Lubrication • Transmission fluids • Filtration • Contamination control Finally, details about the latest transmission technologies—including dual clutch and continuously variable transmissions—have been added.
