Book Estimating Recharge from Ephemeral Rivers in Arid Environments

Download or read book Estimating Recharge from Ephemeral Rivers in Arid Environments written by Wade John Dodson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents a synthesis of groundwater investigations, water quality and watertable monitoring conducted over the last 30 years. It establishes the hydrologic, geological and hydrogeological framework for the Gascoyne River floodplain aquifer. This framework was represented by a transient, quasi three-dimensional, finite-difference groundwater flow model for quantification of the groundwater resources. A probability distribution function of recharge from river flow after the simulation of eight historical flow events over seven years gave an expected recharge volume of 17GL, and an 80% probability of recharge between 3.4 and 28.5GL per river flow. The expected recharge volume exceeds the current rate of abstraction and implies potential for increased groundwater abstraction. This research project has established a fundamental methodology for estimating recharge in arid environments from ephemeral rivers with high flow variability anywhere in the world.

Book Sustainability of Water Resources

Download or read book Sustainability of Water Resources written by Goen Ho and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is essential for all life forms. It is a fundamental resource necessary for socio-economic development and for ecological sustainability. Good quality water is becoming scarce due to population growth and associated industrial development and pollution particularly in towns and cities. It is timely that the sustainability and management of water resources is widely discussed noting that water can be used an unlimited number of times with proper treatment. The papers in Sustainability of Water Resources, were originally presented at a meeting at Murdoch University on 13-14 November 2002, where new and innovative methods of treatment, better understanding and assessment of resources and their supporting ecosystems, and proper management for conservation were explored. The meeting was preceded by a two day workshop on 'Water for Cities' and participants from the workshop from the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean regions contributed to lively discussion at the conference

Book Visual Spatial Enquiry

Download or read book Visual Spatial Enquiry written by Robyn Creagh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual Spatial Enquiry explores visual and textual ways of working within spatial research. Architects and spatial thinkers from the arts, social sciences and humanities present rich case studies from remote and regional settings in Australia to the suburbs of Los Angeles, and from gallery and university settings to community collaborations in Mongolia. Through these case studies the authors reappraise and reconsider research approaches, methods and processes within and across their fields. In spatial research diagramming can be used as a method to synthesise complex concepts into a succinct picture, whereas metaphors can add the richness of lived experiences. Drawing on the editors’ own architectural backgrounds, this volume is organised into three key themes: seeing, doing and making space. In seeing space chapters consider observational research enquiries where developing empathy for the context and topic is as important as gathering concrete data. Doing space explores generative opportunities that inform new and innovative propositions, and making space looks at ways to rethink and reshape spatial and relational settings. Through this volume Creagh and McGann invite readers to find their own understandings of the value and practices of neighbouring fields including planning, geography, ethnography, architecture and art. This exploration will be of value to researchers looking to develop their cross-disciplinary literacy, and to design practitioners looking to enhance and articulate their research skills.

Book Night Parrot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Penny Olsen
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2018-09-01
  • ISBN : 1486303005
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Night Parrot written by Penny Olsen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For well over a century, the Night Parrot lured its seekers into Australia's vast, arid outback. From the beginning it was a mysterious bird. Fewer than 30 specimens were collected before it all but disappeared, offering only fleeting glimpses and the occasional mummified body as proof of its continued existence. Protected by spinifex and darkness, the parrot attained almost mythical status: a challenge to birdwatchers and an inspiration to poets, novelists and artists. Night Parrot documents the competitiveness and secrecy, the triumphs and adventures of the history of the bird and its followers, culminating in the recent discovery of live birds at a few widely scattered locations. It describes what we are now unravelling about the mysteries of its biology and ecology and what is still left to learn. Complemented by guest essays, illustrations and photographs from a wide variety of sources, this book sheds light on Australia's most elusive bird.
