Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Book A Vast Machine

Download or read book A Vast Machine written by Paul N. Edwards and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science behind global warming, and its history: how scientists learned to understand the atmosphere, to measure it, to trace its past, and to model its future. Global warming skeptics often fall back on the argument that the scientific case for global warming is all model predictions, nothing but simulation; they warn us that we need to wait for real data, “sound science.” In A Vast Machine Paul Edwards has news for these skeptics: without models, there are no data. Today, no collection of signals or observations—even from satellites, which can “see” the whole planet with a single instrument—becomes global in time and space without passing through a series of data models. Everything we know about the world's climate we know through models. Edwards offers an engaging and innovative history of how scientists learned to understand the atmosphere—to measure it, trace its past, and model its future.

Book Electronic Imaging in Astronomy

Download or read book Electronic Imaging in Astronomy written by Ian S. McLean and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-17 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Electronic Imaging in Astronomy: Detectors and Instrumentation describes the remarkable developments that have taken place in astronomical detectors and instrumentation in recent years – from the invention of the charge-coupled device (CCD) in 1970 to the current era of very large telescopes, such as the Keck 10-meter telescopes in Hawaii with their laser guide-star adaptive optics which rival the image quality of the Hubble Space Telescope. Authored by one of the world’s foremost experts on the design and development of electronic imaging systems for astronomy, this book has been written on several levels to appeal to a broad readership. Mathematical expositions are designed to encourage a wider audience, especially among the growing community of amateur astronomers with small telescopes with CCD cameras. The book can be used at the college level for an introductory course on modern astronomical detectors and instruments, and as a supplement for a practical or laboratory class.

Book excerpt: This unique and encyclopedic reference work describes the evolution of the physics of modern shock wave and detonation from the earlier and classical percussion. The history of this complex process is first reviewed in a general survey. Subsequently, the subject is treated in more detail and the book is richly illustrated in the form of a picture gallery. This book is ideal for everyone professionally interested in shock wave phenomena.

Book Principles of Multimessenger Astronomy

Download or read book Principles of Multimessenger Astronomy written by Miroslav D.. Filipović and published by Programme: Aas-Iop Astronomy. This book was released on 2021 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy has traditionally relied on capturing photons from cosmic sources to be able to understand the Universe. During the 20th and 21st centuries, different messengers have been added to the astronomer's toolset : cosmic rays, neutrinos, and most recently gravitational waves. Each of these messengers opens a new window on the Universe, and a modern astronomer must be familiar with them. As multimessenger astronomy becomes part of the mainstream, each messenger must be understood not only as its own astronomical domain, but as part of a whole endeavour. A broad understanding of these messengers and their relationship to each other is the main goal of this book. The unique physics of each messenger is introduced, as well as the physics of their detection and interpretation. An additional focus is the discussion of techniques and topics that are common to more than one messenger. Treatments of historical background, the effect of the Earth's atmosphere, the transfer of radiation and measurement techniques are aimed at giving the reader a broad understanding of this new way of observing the cosmos. Principles of multimessenger astronomy is designed to be both an introduction and reference to modern astronomy.

Book Natural Zeolites

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642465188
  • Pages : 419 pages

Download or read book Natural Zeolites written by G. Gottardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeolites form a family of minerals which have been known since the 18th century, but they remained a curiosity for scientists and collectors until 60 years ago, when their unique physicochemical properties attracted the attention of many researchers. In the past 30 years there has been an ex traordinary development in zeolite science; six International Conferences on Zeolites have been held every 3 years since 1967, and a large number of interesting contributions have been published in their proceedings. Many books, written either by individual authors or by several authors under a leading editor, have been published on these interesting silicate phases, but none has been devoted specifically to natural zeolites, even though this theme may be of interest not only to earth scientists, but also to chemists, as the in formation obtained from natural samples completes and in tegrates the characterization of many zeolites. We are trying to fill this gap on the basis of 20 years of research on natural zeolites, which we performed at the University of Modena together with many friends and colleagues. If it is in general difficult to write a scientific book with out upsetting somebody, this is particularly true for a book on natural crystals, because mineralogy is an interdisciplin ary science which covers some fields of physics, chemistry, it is almost impossible to meet every petrology, geology, and requirement.
