Download or read book Alloy Softening in Group VIA Metals Alloyed with Rhenium written by Joseph R. Stephens and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of temperature and composition on alloy softening in group VIA metals Cr, Mo, and W alloyed with Re. Results showed that alloy softening was similar in all three alloy systems occurring at homologous temperatures less than 0.16 and at Re concentrations less than 16 atom percent. Rhenium content required to produce a hardness minimum diminished rapidly in all three systems with increasing test temperature. The similarities in hardness behavior in these three alloy systems suggesat common softening mechanism which may arise from lowering the Peierls stress.

Download or read book Elements of Spacecraft Design written by Charles D. Brown and published by AIAA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This text discusses the conceptual stages of mission design, systems engineering, and orbital mechanics, providing a basis for understanding the design process for different components and functions of a spacecraft. Coverage includes propulsion and power systems, structures, attitude control, thermal control, command and data systems, and telecommunications. Worked examples and exercises are included, in addition to appendices on acronyms and abbreviations and spacecraft design data. The book can be used for self-study or for a course in spacecraft design. Brown directed the team that produced the Magellan spacecraft, and has taught spacecraft design at the University of Colorado. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
Download or read book Saturn V Flight Manual written by NASA and published by WWW.Snowballpublishing.com. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed by Wernher von Braun and Arthur Rudolph at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the Saturn V rocket represents the pinnacle of 20th Century technological achievement. The only launch vehicle in history to transport astronauts beyond Low Earth Orbit, the Saturn V delivered 24 men to the moon. To this day it holds records as the tallest (363 feet), heaviest (nearly 7 million lbs.) and most powerful (over 7.6 million pounds-force of thrust) launch vehicle ever produced. It also remains one of the most reliable, achieving 12 successful launches with one partial failure - the unmanned Apollo 6 which suffered vibration damage on lift-off, resulting in a sub-standard orbit. The Saturn series of rockets resulted from Von Braun's work on the German V-2 and Jupiter series rockets. The Saturn I, a 2-stage liquid-fueled rocket, flew ten times between 1961 and 1965. A uprated version the 1B carried the first crewed Apollo flight into orbit in 1968. The Saturn V, which first flew in 1967, was a three-stage rocket. The first stage, which burned RP-1 and LOX, consisted of five F-1 engines. The second stage used five J-2 engines which burned LOX and liquid hydrogen (LH2). The third stage, based on the second stage of the Saturn 1B, carried a single J-2. The Saturn V could carry up to 262,000 pounds to Low Earth Orbit and more critically, 100,000 pounds to the Moon. Created by NASA as a single-source reference as to the characteristics and functions of the Saturn V, this manual was standard issue to the astronauts of the Apollo and Skylab eras. It contains information about the Saturn V system, range safety and instrumentation, monitoring and control, prelaunch events, and pogo oscillations. It provides a fascinating overview of the rocket that made "one giant leap for mankind" possible.
Download or read book Moon written by Viorel Badescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth has limited material and energy resources. Further development of the humanity will require going beyond our planet for mining and use of extraterrestrial mineral resources and search of power sources. The exploitation of the natural resources of the Moon is a first natural step on this direction. Lunar materials may contribute to the betterment of conditions of people on Earth but they also may be used to establish permanent settlements on the Moon. This will allow developing new technologies, systems and flight operation techniques to continue space exploration. In fact, a new branch of human civilization could be established permanently on Moon in the next century. But, meantime, an inventory and proper social assessment of Moon’s prospective energy and material resources is required. This book investigates the possibilities and limitations of various systems supplying manned bases on Moon with energy and other vital resources. The book collects together recent proposals and innovative options and solutions. It is a useful source of condensed information for specialists involved in current and impending Moon-related activities and a good starting point for young researchers.
