Book excerpt: High rates of wetland loss in southern Louisiana provide the impetus for examining the role that trapped, biogenic gases play in regulating subsidence of coastal areas. A significant cause for wetland loss in this region is relative sea-level rise produced by sediment-volume reduction. Dewatering, grain reorientation and packing, and oxidation of organic-rich sediments are thought to be the main processes for volume loss. It is argued that natural and anthropogenic causes for sediment degasification play a critical role in sediment-volume reduction. Today, thousands of miles of pipelines and related infrastructure link the state's coast to oil and gas consumers nationwide. During the course of this historic development, however, the dredging of pipeline canals accelerated coastal erosion. Currently, 80 percent of the United States' wetland loss occurs on Louisiana's coast despite the fact that the state is home to only 40 percent of the nation's wetland acreage, making evident the enormous unin-tended environmental cost associated with producing energy from the Gulf Coast. In American Energy, Imperiled Coast Jason P. Theriot explores the tension between oil and gas development and the land-loss crisis in Louisiana. The wetlands contain 95% of all marine species in the Gulf of Mexico, 30% of the nation's fisheries, and one of the largest habitats in the world for migratory waterfowl. More than 25% of all oil and gas used in the United States originates or passes through these wetlands, which also serve as a buffer for hurricanes. The State of Louisiana asked ASCE to convene a summit to discuss technical aspects involved in carrying out restoration programs and to report on the insights that could be drawn from the summit. This report provides conclusions and recommendations concerning the technical topics discussed at the summit as well as the Task Committee's recommendations for a path forward.
