Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas phase metal-containing clusters are investigated with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and with both electronic and vibrational laser spectroscopy. Metal ion-molecule complexes of Mg(+) and Ca(+) are studied with electronic photodissociation spectroscopy near the energies of the atomic cation ((2)P-(2)S) resonances. Vibrational spectroscopy of Mg(+) and Al(+) complexes with CO2 are studied with infrared photodissociation spectroscopy near the CO2 asymmetric stretch vibration. The vibrational spectroscopy of metal oxide and carbide nanoclusters are studied with multiphoton ionization or multiphoton photodissociation using an infrared free-electron laser. Experiments designed to synthesize macroscopic quantities of ligand-coated nanoparticles have been initiated.

Book Structure and Dynamics in Metal Containing Clusters

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics in Metal Containing Clusters written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas phase clusters were produced composed of a metal ion bound to one or more molecular "ligands" (e.g., water, nitrogen, acetylene, methanol, etc.). These gas phase complexes were studied with mass-selected laser photodissociation spectroscopy and laser photoelectron spectroscopy (ZEKE) . These studies determine the structures and energetics of these clusters and they probe the dynamics of nascent solvation processes. Other metal clusters and metal-organic complexes were produced in the gas phase and evaluated for their potential for isolation in macroscopic quantities. Mass spectrometry and laser photodissociation measurements were employed for metal carbides, metal-C60 complexes and complexes of metal with polyaromatic hydrocarbons. These studies provide detailed experimental data which can be compared to theory to improve the overall understanding of metal-molecular interactions.

Book Physical Chemistry of Cold Gas Phase Functional Molecules and Clusters

Download or read book Physical Chemistry of Cold Gas Phase Functional Molecules and Clusters written by Takayuki Ebata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes advanced research on the structures and photochemical properties of polyatomic molecules and molecular clusters having various functionalities under cold gas-phase conditions. Target molecules are crown ethers, polypeptides, large size protonated clusters, metal clusters, and other complex polyatomic molecules of special interest. A variety of advanced frequency and time-domain laser spectroscopic methods are applied. The book begins with the principle of an experimental setup for cold gas-phase molecules and various laser spectroscopic methods, followed by chapters on investigation of specific molecular systems. Through a molecular-level approach and analysis by quantum chemical calculation, it is possible to learn how atomic and molecular-level interactions (van der Waals, hydrogen-bonding, and others) control the specific properties of molecules and clusters. Those properties include molecular recognition, induced fitting, chirality, proton and hydrogen transfer, isomerization, and catalytic reaction. The information will be applicable to the design of new types of functional molecules and nanoparticles in the broad area that includes applied chemistry, drug delivery systems, and catalysts.

Download or read book Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry written by David H. Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of gas phase inorganic ion chemistry is relatively new; the early studies date back approximately twenty years, but there has been intense interest and development in the field in the last ten years. As with much of modern chemistry, the growth in gas phase inorganic ion chemistry can be traced to the development of instrumentation and new experimental methods. Studies in this area require sophisticated instruments and sample introduc tion/ ionization methods, and often these processes are complicated by the need for state-selecting (or collisionally stabilizing) the reactive species in order to assign the chemistry unequivocally. At the present level of experimental development, a wide range of experiments on diverse ionic systems are possible and many detailed aspects of the chemistry can be studied. Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry focuses on the reactions of metal ions and metal clusters, and on the study of these species using the available modern spectroscopic methods. Three of the twelve chapters cover the chemistry of ionic monometal transition metal ions and the chemistry of these species with small diatomics and model organics. Two of the chapters focus on the studies of the chemical and physical properties of (primarily) transition metal clusters, and these chapters review experimental methods and capabilities. Two chapters also deal with the chemistry of transition metal carbonyl clusters, and these chapters address issues important to cluster growth and activation as well as the characterization of such species.

Metal complexes with carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water, acetylene or benzene are studied for a variety of metals. The number and intensity of infrared active bands are compared to the predictions of density functional theory calculations to derive structures, spin states and coordination numbers in these systems. These studied provide new insights into subtle details of metal-molecular interactions important in heterogeneous catalysis, metal-ligand bonding and metal ion solvation.

Book Investigation of Gas phase Metal Ion Complexes Using Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Calculations

Download or read book Investigation of Gas phase Metal Ion Complexes Using Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Calculations written by Ryan Patrick Dain and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of theoretical chemistry and "action" spectroscopy has become the most used tool for the exploration of gas-phase molecular ions. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to test the validity of conclusions drawn from the results of a matrix-isolation infrared (MI-IR) experiment and develop a modeling method that could be used for metal-coordinating chlorate ion pairs. That modeling method was then used in comparison with experimental infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy to determine the structures of metal-chlorate anions. In addition to structural information, the effect of the modeling method on spectral correlation was also investigated.

This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. Readership: research chemists at universities or in industry, graduate students.

Book Organometallic Chemistry

    Book Details:
  • Author : E W Abel
  • Publisher : Royal Society of Chemistry
  • Release : 2007-10-31
  • ISBN : 1847554091

Download or read book Organometallic Chemistry written by E W Abel and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organometallic chemistry is an interdisciplinary science which continues to grow at a rapid pace. Although there is continued interest in synthetic and structural studies the last decade has seen a growing interest in the potential of organometallic chemistry to provide answers to problems in catalysis synthetic organic chemistry and also in the development of new materials. This Specialist Periodical Report aims to reflect these current interests reviewing progress in theoretical organometallic chemistry, main group chemistry, the lanthanides and all aspects of transition metal chemistry. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Reaction Mechanisms in Carbon Dioxide Conversion

Download or read book Reaction Mechanisms in Carbon Dioxide Conversion written by Michele Aresta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-07 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the reaction mechanisms relevant to a number of processes in which CO2 is converted into valuable products. Several different processes are considered that convert CO2 either in specialty chemicals or in bulk products or fuels. For each reaction, the mechanism is discussed and the assessed steps besides the dark sites of the reaction pathway are highlighted. From the insertion of CO2 into E-X bonds to the reduction of CO2 to CO or other C1 molecules or else to C2 or Cn molecules, the reactions are analysed in order to highlight the known and obscure reaction steps. Besides well known reaction mechanisms and energy profiles, several lesser known situations are discussed. Advancing knowledge of the latter would help to develop efficient routes for the conversion of CO2 into valuable products useful either in the chemical or in the energy industry. The content of this book is quite different from other books reporting the use of CO2. On account of its clear presentation, “Reaction Mechanisms in Carbon Dioxide Conversion” targets in particular researchers, teachers and PhD students.

Book Physics and Chemistry of Small Clusters

Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of Small Clusters written by P. Jena and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in experimental techniques now enable researchers to produce in a laboratory clusters of atoms of desired composition from any of the elements of the periodic table. This has created a new area of research into novel materials since clusters cannot be regarded either as a "large" molecule or as a fragment of the bulk. Both experimental and theoretical studies are revealing unusual properties that are not ob served in solid state environments. The structures of micro-clusters are found to be significantly distorted from the most symmetric arrangement, some even exhibiting pentagonal symmetry commonly found in icosahedric structures. The unusual stability of certain clusters, now described as "magic number species", shows striking similarities with the nuclear shell structure. The relative stabilities of clusters depend not only on the composition of the clusters but also on their charged states. The studies on spontaneous fragmentation of mUltiply charged clusters, commonly referred to as Coulomb explosion, illustrate the role of electronic bonding mechanisms on stability of clusters. The effect of foreign atoms on geometry and stability of clusters and the interaction of gas atoms with clusters are showing promise for an indepth understanding of chemisorption and catalysis. The magnetic and optical properties are dependent not only on cluster size but also on its geometry. These findings have the potential for aiding industry in the area of micro-electronics and catalysis.
