Book Hydrodynamics of Packed Bed Reactor in Low Gravity

Download or read book Hydrodynamics of Packed Bed Reactor in Low Gravity written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packed bed reactors are well known for their vast and diverse applications in the chemical industry; from gas absorption, to stripping, to catalytic conversion. Use of this type of reactor in terrestrial applications has been rather extensive because of its simplicity and relative ease of operation. Developing similar reactors for use in microgravity is critical to many space-based advanced life support systems. However, the hydrodynamics of two-phase flow packed bed reactors in this new environment and the effects of one physiochemical process on another has not been adequately assessed. Surface tension or capillary forces play a much greater role which results in a shifting in flow regime transitions and pressure drop. Results from low gravity experiments related to flow regimes and two-phase pressure drop models are presented in this paper along with a description of plans for a flight experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). Understanding the packed bed hydrodynamics and its effects on mass transfer processes in microgravity is crucial for the design of packed bed chemical or biological reactors to be used for water reclamation and other life support processes involving water purification. Book Prediction of Gas Liquid Two Phase Flow Regime in Microgravity

Download or read book Prediction of Gas Liquid Two Phase Flow Regime in Microgravity written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An attempt is made to predict gas-liquid two-phase flow regime in a pipe in a microgravity environment through scaling analysis based on dominant physical mechanisms. Simple inlet geometry is adopted in the analysis to see the effect of inlet configuration on flow regime transitions. Comparison of the prediction with the existing experimental data shows good agreement, though more work is required to better define some physical parameters. The analysis clarifies much of the physics involved in this problem and can be applied to other configurations. Lee, Jinho and Platt, Jonathan A. Glenn Research Center RTOP 694-03-0A

Book Hydrodynamic of a Co current Gas Liquid Upflow in a Moving Packed Bed Reactor with Porous Catalysts

Download or read book Hydrodynamic of a Co current Gas Liquid Upflow in a Moving Packed Bed Reactor with Porous Catalysts written by Ali Jabbar Toukan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this study, the hydrodynamic, i.e. flow regime identification, line average liquid holdup, and the internal liquid holdup of a co-current moving packed bed reactor were studied. For the sake of hydrodynamics study, moving bed reactor is investigated as two-phase upflow packed bed reactor. Scaled down configuration was used to simulate of the moving bed reactors utilized in the industrial process. First, line average liquid holdup is measured with different geometrical configurations covering empty, dry, wet, and packed column under flowrates operation conditions. A new methodology has been developed to determine the line average liquid holdup for a porous catalyst. Second, flow regime is identified by variation of superficial gas velocity at constant liquid superficial velocity. The experiments were carried out in an 11 - inch inner diameter Plexiglas column using the air-water system, at superficial gas velocities in the range of 0.6 to 7.7 cm/s and at a constant liquid superficial velocity of 0.017 cm/s. Gamma ray densitometry (GRD) technique was used to obtain the line average liquid holdup and to identify the flow regime at different axial and radial positions along the column. The obtained results showed that the flow regimes are bubble flow and pulse flow regimes with a transition flow in-between under the operation conditions used. The result showed that the liquid holdup decreased as the superficial gas velocity increased. It was also found that the liquid holdup radial distribution was not uniform. These kinds of information are essential to improve the performance of the reactor"--Abstract, page iv.

Book An Analysis of Two phase Flows in Conditions Relevant to Microgravity

Download or read book An Analysis of Two phase Flows in Conditions Relevant to Microgravity written by Santiago Arias Calderon and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promising technological applications of two-phase flows in space have captured the increasing interest of the space sector, provoking a strong demand for more fundamental knowledge. Great efforts have been made in recent decades to study the behavior of two-phase flows in low-gravity environments, which is expected to be different than the behavior observed in the presence of gravitational forces. Nevertheless, many phenomena are still poorly understood. The development of any of these new technologies demands a better knowledge of two-phase flows. In this manuscript we address questions regarding the generation of gas-liquid flows and their behavior in conditions relevant for a microgravity environment. In particular, we focus on an air-water mixture formed in a capillary T-junction. To this end, an experimental setup has been designed to accurately control both gas and liquid flow rates. We performed a quantitative characterization on ground of the T-junction, whose operation is robust to changes in gravity level. Its main performance is the generation of bubbles at a regular frequency with small size dispersion. We obtained two working regimes of the T-junction and identified the crossover region between them. Bubble, slug, churn and annular flow regimes have been observed during the experiments and a flow pattern map has been plotted. We present an experimental study on the bubble-slug transition in microgravity-related conditions. In addition, we address questions regarding the existence of a critical void fraction in order for the bubble-slug transition to occur. The gas-liquid flow has been characterized by measuring the bubble generation frequency as well as the bubble and liquid slug sizes. Since bubble dynamics is also expected to be different in the absence of buoyancy, the bubble velocity has also been studied. The mean void fraction appears as one relevant parameter that allows for the prediction of frequency, bubble velocity, and lengths. We propose curves obtained empirically for the behavior of generation frequency, the bubble velocity and the lengths. The dependence of the frequency on the Strouhal dimensionless number has been analyzed. A numerical study of the formation of mini-bubbles in a 2D T-junction by means of the fluid dynamics numerical code JADIM is also presented. Simulations were carried out for different flow conditions, giving rise to results on the bubble generation frequency, bubble velocity, void fraction and characteristic lengths. Numerical results have been then compared with experimental data.

Book Microgravity Research in Support of Technologies for the Human Exploration and Development of Space and Planetary Bodies

Download or read book Microgravity Research in Support of Technologies for the Human Exploration and Development of Space and Planetary Bodies written by Committee on Microgravity Research and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-07-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frontier represented by the near solar system confronts humanity with intriguing challenges and opportunities. With the inception of the Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) enterprise in 1995, NASA has acknowledged the opportunities and has accepted the very significant challenges. Microgravity Research in Support of Technologies for the Human Exploration and Development of Space and Planetary Bodies was commissioned by NASA to assist it in coordinating the scientific information relevant to anticipating, identifying, and solving the technical problems that must be addressed throughout the HEDS program over the coming decades. This report assesses scientific and related technological issues facing NASA's Human Exploration and Development of Space endeavor, looking specifically at mission enabling and enhancing technologies which, for development, require an improved understanding of fluid and material behavior in a reduced gravity environment.
