For a 15 mm long, 200 mu m diameter capillary, quasi-monoenergetic e-beams up to 300 MeV were observed. By de-tuning discharge delay from optimum guiding performance, self-trapping was found to be stabilized. For a 33 mm long, 300 mu m capillary, a parameter regime with high energy electron beams, up to 1 GeV, was found. In this regime, the electron beam peak energy was correlated with the amount of trapped electrons.

The three limitations are due to laser diffraction, acceleration phase slippage, and structure damage by high power laser if solid-state optical waveguide is used. The two classes of laser acceleration are direct-field acceleration and ponderomotive-driven acceleration. Thus this letter and its companion [1] provide solutions that are crucial to all mainstream approaches for laser acceleration, either in vacuum, gases or plasmas.

Book excerpt: Laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs) have demonstrated high accelerating gradients on the order of tens of GV/m, two to three orders of magnitude greater than conventional accelerators. One fundamental issue of an LPA is that the driving laser loses energy to excite plasma waves and eventually, the laser energy will be too low to continue the wake excitation. LPAs could overcome this depletion by using staged acceleration, a sequence of modules where each module is driven by a fresh laser pulse. To demonstrate this concept, a new experimental setup (staging experiment) has been built at the LOASIS facility at LBNL. In this experiment, pulses from a 40 TW peak power laser system are split into a 25 TW pulse and a 15 TW pulse, where the first pulse is used for e-beam production in the first module and the second pulse is used for wake excitation in the second module to post-accelerate the e-beam.

Book excerpt: During the project we have demonstrated control of several important parameters of capillary channels. We achieved the required profiles for guiding, we have demonstrated channels in density range between 1017-1019cm−3 in both short and long capillaries. The plasma temperature and density profiles were measured in both radial and longitudinal directions. The Boron Nitride capillary has provided a guiding medium that can withstand more than 1000 shots. The laser ignition of capillary discharge provided reliable almost jitter free approach. Both laser and experimental set up were upgraded. The laser system upgrade included development of a 10 TW Ti-sapphire laser facility that will be used for acceleration experiments instead T cube. We have conducted high intensity (above 1017W/cm2) guiding experiments through various capillaries. The concerns related to influence of relatively high current density flow through capillary on the injected electrons were studied extensively by us both theoretically and experimentally using a simple injection method. The method is based on the interaction of a high intensity laser pulse with a thin wire placed near capillary entrance. The influence of magnetic fields was found to be insignificant. Using this method we have studied transport of electrons though capillary discharge. We have simulated beam injection into a channel guided LWFA and found that under certain conditions the injected electron distribution can be very broad. Finally, prior to the staging of the capillary based accelerators, we performed a proof-of-principal experiment on staged optical injection and laser wakefield acceleration using two different short laser pulses focused into two spatially separated gas jets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capillary channels of cm-length and at plasma density low compared to gas jets are promising setups for low noise laser wakefield acceleration. Computationally, however, the large discrepancy of the length scales of the plasma and the laser are a big challenge. Methods are therefore sought that relax the need to concurrently resolve both length scales. Average methods, which split the electromagnetic field into a fast and a slowly varying part, allow to relax the constraint to resolve the laser wavelength. Such an envelope model is currently being incorporated into the VORPAL plasma simulation code. Simulation results for benchmark cases and for laser pulse propagation in a cm-scale channel are presented.
