Book excerpt: From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Searchers, the revelatory story behind the classic movie High Noon and the toxic political climate in which it was created. It's one of the most revered movies of Hollywood's golden era. Starring screen legend Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in her first significant film role, High Noon was shot on a lean budget over just thirty-two days but achieved instant box-office and critical success. It won four Academy Awards in 1953, including a best actor win for Cooper. And it became a cultural touchstone, often cited by politicians as a favorite film, celebrating moral fortitude. Yet what has been often overlooked is that High Noon was made during the height of the Hollywood blacklist, a time of political inquisition and personal betrayal. In the middle of the film shoot, screenwriter Carl Foreman was forced to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities about his former membership in the Communist Party. Refusing to name names, he was eventually blacklisted and fled the United States. (His co-authored screenplay for another classic, The Bridge on the River Kwai, went uncredited in 1957.) Examined in light of Foreman's testimony, High Noon's emphasis on courage and loyalty takes on deeper meaning and importance. In this book, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Frankel tells the story of the making of a great American Western, exploring how Carl Foreman's concept of High Noon evolved from idea to first draft to final script, taking on allegorical weight. Both the classic film and its turbulent political times emerge newly illuminated.

Book Scandals of Classic Hollywood

Download or read book Scandals of Classic Hollywood written by Anne Helen Petersen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrity gossip meets history in this compulsively readable collection from Buzzfeed reporter Anne Helen Peterson. This guide to film stars and their deepest secrets is sure to top your list for movie gifts and appeal to fans of classic cinema and hollywood history alike. Believe it or not, America’s fascination with celebrity culture was thriving well before the days of TMZ, Cardi B, Kanye's tweets, and the #metoo allegations that have gripped Hollywood. And the stars of yesteryear? They weren’t always the saints that we make them out to be. BuzzFeed's Anne Helen Petersen, author of Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud, is here to set the record straight. Pulling little-known gems from the archives of film history, Petersen reveals eyebrow-raising information, including: • The smear campaign against the original It Girl, Clara Bow, started by her best friend • The heartbreaking story of Montgomery Clift’s rapid rise to fame, the car accident that destroyed his face, and the “long suicide” that followed • Fatty Arbuckle's descent from Hollywood royalty, fueled by allegations of a boozy orgy turned violent assault • Why Mae West was arrested and jailed for "indecency charges" • And much more Part biography, part cultural history, these stories cover the stuff that films are made of: love, sex, drugs, illegitimate children, illicit affairs, and botched cover-ups. But it's not all just tawdry gossip in the pages of this book. The stories are all contextualized within the boundaries of film, cultural, political, and gender history, making for a read that will inform as it entertains. Based on Petersen's beloved column on the Hairpin, but featuring 100% new content, Scandals of Classic Hollywood is sensationalism made smart.

Book excerpt: In the tapestry of Hollywood stardom, Grace Patricia Kelly's story unfolds as a captivating narrative, blending the realms of American cinema and European royalty. Born into a prominent Catholic family with roots entwined in Irish and German heritage, Kelly emerged from the bustling streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a luminary destined for the limelight. Embarking on her artistic journey, Kelly graced the stages of New York City's theatrical realm, where her talent blossomed in over 40 live drama shows during the Golden Age of Television. Her alma mater, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, bore witness to her transformative growth, culminating in her graduation in 1949. The cinematic canvas painted by Kelly's career exhibited a kaleidoscope of roles, each brushstroke contributing to her ascent to stardom. The adventure-romance "Mogambo" (1953), directed by the venerable John Ford, served as a pivotal juncture, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The drama "The Country Girl" (1954) further embellished her accolades, securing an Academy Award for Best Actress. Kelly's repertoire extended beyond accolades to a constellation of cinematic gems. From the timeless allure of "High Noon" (1952) to the enchanting "High Society" (1956), she left an indelible mark. The realm of suspense found its muse in Kelly through collaborations with the maestro Alfred Hitchcock, featuring in classics like "Dial M for Murder" (1954), "Rear Window" (1954), and "To Catch a Thief" (1955).

Book Grace Kelly

Download or read book Grace Kelly written by Mike Gent and published by Character-19. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace Kelly will go down in history as the actress who sacrificed her own career for love, aged just 26. One thing she did not forsake, however, was the headlines. They, and the lenses of the world’s press, followed her wherever she went, and while High Society, the last of her 11 movies, in 1956, brought down the curtain on her Hollywood career, the legend lived on. Her rapid rise through the Hollywood star firmament was assisted by the likes of director John Ford, who said her audition showed “breeding, quality, and class.” Actor Gary Cooper and thriller director Alfred Hitchcock were other supporters, while an Oscar for her role in 1954’s The Country Girl proved Grace had arrived in the top rank of screen goddesses. Marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco stopped her ascent in its tracks, but the blonde bombshell proved a continuing trendsetter in the worlds of style and fashion until her shocking and unexpected death in 1982. This book charts her progress to silver-screen success and looks at the private woman as well as the superstar who has inspired songs, exhibitions, and even appeared on a US postage stamp. It is a tribute to a much-loved princess in words and pictures, capturing her enduring appeal and explaining how this actress of Irish/German descent became an American and international icon.

Gary Cooper was, in short, an American icon when actors still seemed to personify the hopes and ambitions of a thriving nation.

Book Grace Kelly Not A Fairytale Life

Download or read book Grace Kelly Not A Fairytale Life written by Marta Zapała-Kraj and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: In the history of the American cinema, few stars are remembered so vividly although they appeared for so briefly as Grace Kelly. Robert Lacey in his bestseller book Grace makes a remark that although famous “American princess” had spent years cultivating her image of classic, white-gloved perfection, in real life, Grace was surprisingly often reckless young woman who had affairs with nearly all of her leading men” (Lacey 1996:i). A working actor for just five short years in the 1950s, known best for her roles as sparkling although moody partner and obviously for her work in multiple Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, Kelly outwardly came to embody her name with a seemingly effortless elegance and an almost unearthly aestheticism. James Spada, the author of Grace - The Secret Lives of a Princess states that: “the public image of Grace Kelly – first as a movie star, then as a Princess - was a triumph of myth over reality” (Spada 1987: i). And consequently, one can assume, after a thorough research of her biographies that even though the public was presented with an image of a chaste young actress, often referred to as the “Ice Queen” (Ibid.), the truth about her real life is far more interesting and has much more hidden beneath. In order to see the true Grace Kelly it is indeed necessary to read the opinions of her closest friends and family as quoted in the biographical sources. Without that, the only image one can obtain is that of thousands of Internet pages dully repeating the same statements about her being pretty and talented, reporting her fairy-tale life and quoting stereotypical phrases.

Book Grace Kelly

Download or read book Grace Kelly written by Cristina Morató and published by FLASH. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
