Book The Palgrave Handbook of Global Rehabilitation in Criminal Justice

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Global Rehabilitation in Criminal Justice written by Maurice Vanstone and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a unique overview of rehabilitation as practiced internationally in criminal justice. Through the contributions of a diverse group that includes, among others, academics (some of whom are former practitioners), research students, a judge, and a probation chief, it reflects common features of criminal justice in different countries and documents their diversity and celebrates their vitality. In recent times the idea of ‘law and order’ has been expropriated by populist, authoritarian and doctrinaire regimes, almost always and nearly everywhere in the service of arbitrary and unjust rule. By and large this handbook does not include such regimes. But ‘law’ itself also has the capacity to constrain rulers, and ‘order’ in the form of social peace is a universally approved civic asset. In part, the book provides a counter-narrative demonstrating that although criminal justice dispositions such as probation, prisons, and parole can be represented as a ‘via dolorosa’, rehabilitation as illustrated in these pages can become a journey that leads by degrees towards the possibility of a better life. The handbook will be of interest to students, academics, practitioners, managers, policy makers and all those who wish to gain insight into the why and the how of rehabilitation in criminal justice systems across the world.

Book Re imagining Policing in Canada

Download or read book Re imagining Policing in Canada written by Dennis Cooley and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policing in Canada is in the process of change: similar to other nations in the western world, many of the policing services that were provided by public forces in the past are being gradually handed over to private security agencies. Complex networks of policing that reflect a mix of public and private security providers are emerging, and this transformation has serious implications for how Canadians interact with one another. For instance, if residents of a gated community or members of a downtown business association pay for their own policing services rather than relying on the public police, whose law is being enforced? With this collection, Dennis Cooley has brought together some of the top minds in criminology and policing to examine the phenomenon of the changing nature of policing in Canada. The essays describe the character and constitution of security in Canada and explore the implications of these changes in terms of larger questions about power, social control, justice, and law. Wide-ranging and topical, Re-imagining Policing in Canada will prove essential reading for policy-makers and scholars alike.

Book Technocrime

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stéphane Leman-Langlois
  • Publisher : Willan
  • Release : 2013-05-13
  • ISBN : 1134002033
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Technocrime written by Stéphane Leman-Langlois and published by Willan. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the concept of 'technocrime'. The term encompasses crimes committed on or with computers - the standard definition of cybercrime - but it goes well beyond this to convey the idea that technology enables an entirely new way of committing, combating and thinking about criminality, criminals, police, courts, victims and citizens. Technology offers, for example, not only new ways of combating crime, but also new ways to look for, unveil, and label crimes, and new ways to know, watch, prosecute and punish criminals. Technocrime differs from books concerned more narrowly with cybercrime in taking an approach and understanding of the scope of technology's impact on crime and crime control. It uncovers mechanisms by which behaviours become crimes or cease to be called crimes. It identifies a number of corporate, government and individual actors who are instrumental in this construction. And it looks at the beneficiaries of increased surveillance, control and protection as well as the targets of it. Chapters in the book cover specific technologies (e.g. the use of CCTV in various settings; computers, hackers and security experts; photo radar) but have a wider objective to provide a comparative perspective and some broader theoretical foundations for thinking about crime and technology than have existed hitherto. This is a pioneering book which advances our understanding of the relationship between crime and technology, drawing upon the disciplines of criminology, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, surveillance studies and cultural studies.
