Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER A travel narrative following three ancient roads and looking at more than two thousand years of history of Ancient Rome through the modern eye. In 66 b.c., young, ambitious Julius Caesar, seeking recognition and authority, became the curator of the Via Appia, a road stretching from Rome to Brindisi. To gain popularity with Roman citizens along the way, he borrowed significant sums to restore the ancient highway. He eventually achieved greatness in Rome and the far reaches of Gaul, leading armies along the Via Appia and its sister road, the Via Egnatia, across the Balkans, to battle enemies in Roman civil wars. Other armies followed these two roads that eventually connected Rome to Constantinople, today’s Istanbul. Both Octavian and, later, his friend-turned enemy Mark Antony traveled portions of these roads to defeat Caesar’s murderers, Brutus and Cassius. The great Roman statesman Cicero, the Roman poet Homer, the historian Virgil, and many other notables also journeyed on them. In the early second century a.d., the emperor Trajan charted a new, faster, coastal route between Benevento and Brindisi, later called the Via Traiana. Today, the remains of these roads are preserved as archaeological wonders, and can be seen through the countryside near, and sometimes under, modern highways in the ruins of ancient Roman cities. Some of the earliest villages have disappeared, while others have grown into modern towns with the ancient roads hidden beneath latter-day pavements. In this sojourn across Roman history, John Keahey delves into encounters with diverse peoples in these towns in Italy, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey, who warmly embrace travelers following in the footsteps of their ancestors. They shared knowledge of historical sites, meals, and a wealth of local lore. Keahey’s unparalleled storytelling breathes life into the prominent figures, pivotal events, and ancient roads that paved the way for the rise and endurance of the Roman empire. It is a journey full of adventure, discovery, and friendship.

This comprehensive reference allows readers to view the land as its denizens have for centuries--regionally. Domenico superbly surveys the regional and provincial characteristics and culture of the 20 regions, including economy, cuisine, history, recent politics, and arts. This is the only single general reference volume in English on Italy's regions and will be highly in demand by teachers, students of Italian language and culture, and travelers. Italy's enormous contributions to western civilization continue to make it a cultural and economic powerhouse and a top tourist destination. The Regions of Italy succinctly conveys the formidable richness of the whole through its parts, with a user-friendly format that makes it easy to glean the important information on the area of interest. A chronology, glossary, and wide selection of photos accompany the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction The Fourth Symposium on Sediment/Water Interactions was held in Melbourne, Australia, February 16-20th, 1987. The previous three symposia were held in Amsterdam, Kingston (Ontario), and Geneva, In keeping with the approach established in Geneva, contributions addressed sediment/water interactions related to both fresh and salt water conditions. More than 160 papers were given in Melbourne, including more than 20 poster presentations, and collected Abstracts are available from Dr. B. T. Hart. A total of 51 papers, subsequently, have been published as proceedings of the Melbourne Symposium; 45 of these appear in this issue of Hydrobiologia. A further six appeared earlier as a selection of papers in J. Environ. Geol. and Water Science (1988, issue # 1); these six papers appear in abstract form, only, in the present pUblication. Although concerned with the global environment, the International Association for Sediment Water Science attempts to ensure that there is a genuine opportunity for participants to focus on regional issues throughout the world and, in particular, to provide a local forum for their presentation. The Melbourne meeting was particularly successful in achieving this objective, and Australasia was well represented by about 36 percent of the contributors. About 27 percent were from Europe, 17 percent from North America, 7 percent from China and Japan, 7 percent from Southeast Asia and India, and about 6 percent came from other areas. In all, 25 countries were represented.
